If the pulsing is rhythmic; say, it pops from 60 to 80 every couple
seconds then settles back it could be a radial fracture in one of the
gears that drives the odometer or speedometer. Cable and adapter
problems typically cause the needle to bounce all over the place.
I use silicone oil for cable and internals--and bicycle gears--as it
attracts less dust.
