- I am confused here. All of the axle shafts that I have ever seen for disk wheels have a flange on the end which I was sure was forged with the axle. That is they are one piece. Axles for wire wheels

- Our mistake, it does look like the first Midgets did have disk wheels. At least there is a nice picture of the "new" Midget in the Sep. 1961 issue of R&T with disk wheels. It also has small hub caps

- Would suggest checking the gauge before doing anything else. Heat up a pan of water with the temp blub suspended about in the center and another thermometer that has a simular range for a reference.
