Hello lists. The Kastner Cup race was great. Lots of cars, good
competition and fun. The Kastner Cup shirt was a hit and many people
requested additional shirts. There seems to be enough interest to do
one more run of shirts. We are donating a portion of the proceeds from
the sale of all the Kastner Cup shirts to Mark Bradakis, the operator
and majordomo of all the team.net sites. Mark's efforts benefit all of
us in this hobby - racers, restorer's or just plain interested
enthusiasts. Even if we don't get a sufficient number of orders,
please donate to team.net. Kas likes the idea of Mark getting some
extra funds and might be persuaded to autograph your shirt. Details
worked out between buyers and Kas. Email Kas at kaskas@cox.net.

We have a final order date of close of business, May 14. Tuesday we are
go or no/go. Shirts will be $15 for size small through XL. $18 for XXL
or XXXL. (price does not include shipping) You need to contact us with
your name, shipping address and method of payment -
Visa/MasterCard/Discover or send a check - no PayPal. If we have enough
orders, shirts will be printed and shipped. If we do not have a
sufficient number of orders, your information will be shredded. A
minimum of 48 orders is needed. For those who have not seen the shirt,
here is a link to view the shirt.

Order early, order often. Thanks for all your support. Ted

My non OD trans occasionally slips out of 3rd gear, especially while I'm
going back and forth alternately accelerating and decelerating in that gear.
Someone recently told me the fix was a minor adjustment that could be done
without tearing in to the Trans. Comments? Laughter?

Thanks

I recently posted on the triumphs list that my transmission does the same,
and Racetorations (who built it for me) is sending one of their guys across
to pull it out and rebuild it for me. In light of this, I doubt there is a
simple fix. But let me know if you hear of one!

Jumping out of third upon deceleration is usually an indication of a worn
synchro. No easy fix.

Jumping out of gear upon deceleration can be the result of a number of
factors: the tips of the shift fork are worn, the dog teeth on the 3rd gear
are worn, or the teeth on the locking gear that carries the syncro cup are
worn. If it goes into gear OK, it is likely a comb of the last two.

Whatever, to end the problem, the trans needs rebuilding.

Impressed that Racetorations is sending a guy across the pond to make it
right.
Okay, question, when we do a rebuild of major component, trannie,
differential etc. on our 40 year old cars, do we insist that key parts are
replaced, even if they look okay or are still within book spec. For
instance, some rebuilders replace differential crown wheel and pinion as a
matter of course, others not.

Hello list members. We did not receive enough orders to reprint the Kas

Greetings all!

I see on http://www.vtr.org/maintain/trunnion-oil.shtml
that Peter Zaborski uses a Quicksilver Grease Gun (P/N
C-91-37299 and oil is Quicksilver Gear Lube Super Duty
in a 250 ml tube (P/N 92-98780). That's good info for
trunnion oiling.

But, can someone recommend a good quality grease gun
for tie rods, u-joints, ball joints, etc. that is able to reach
grease zerks while lying on ones back on the floor of a
garage? :- ) The grease gun I have must be a cheapo -- it
leaks and is too large to maneuver where it's needed....

Thanks!

Dave

I have a Lincoln pneumatic grease gun.
It comes with a long flexible hose to the nozzle, like the one in your link, but longer.
I don't have issues with it leaking.
I got it because I have a farm with several tractors and do a LOT of greasing, like every weekend. The hand lever guns were killing me!

The great thing about this Lincoln is the trigger is easy to pull and leaves your other hand free to lock (and sometimes hold) the nozzle down on the zerk fitting.
The hose is flexible enough to get into tight places and stiff enough to shove on to recessed fittings (man I hate those).

The other great thing is that it has the power to blow through most stuck fittings.

the quality is outstanding. I have had no issues and have dropped it a couple of times with not even a scratch.
The pull back latch is easy to engage and very positive.

You will fall in love with it and wonder why it took you so long to get it. Kind of like your first air ratchet.
You will also end up greasing things more often, just to use it. That's a good thing.

They make a battery powered one, if you don't have a compressor. But hey, if you don't have a compressor then shame on you! Buy one just so you can use the grease gun.

I now own Peter's car (it's a beauty) and unfortunately that's one of the bits
that he did not include with the car! :)

Cheers,

I went to the local Mercury Marine dealer a while back and purchased the
Quicksilver grease gun and tube. works great for trunnions and steering rack.

Re regular geaase fittings. I have a normal hand operated grease gun with a
long rubber hose. I ground down the end fitting on the bench grinder enough
to get into those tighter places.

Thanks to all who replied, on and off-line, to my grease gun question.

Grinding down the fitting to get into the 'tight places' sounds like a
good idea, too....

Cheers!

Anyone have a 4 speed gear box with the Dolomite Sprint close ratio gear
set they care to sell?
How about just the gear set?
How about just the third gears?

Lost 3rd gear in mine last weekend -- darn and it/I were running better
than we ever have

British Frame and Engine does not even know if they are available;
Quantumechanics has them on order for arrival in "a few weeks".
Rimmer brothers appears to have something in a gear set at a little over
$1000 [too much].
Racestorations sells the whole box, very expensive

Do not know of any other vendors [Wishbone Classics?? Anybody have an email
contact there?]

Thanks,
Chuck Arnold

I believe the master brake reservoir is leaking between the plastic and the
metal. can I take it apart and put in a gasket or something? or should I
replace/rebuild the whole assembly?

Dave
Very common problem. The reservoir warps and leaks at the square cut seal.
You can replace the reservoir. Sometimes they are worse than the original.
I have had some success with a slightly larger in section O-Ring from
the hardware store believe it or not.
Poor design by Girling, Lucas, now TRW.

Hey guys,
Hate to bomb the lists, but I might be able to kill two birds with one stone.
I have a good friend looking for a nice TR3A/B project.

If anyone has one or knows of one let me know off list.
Thx,

I have a 4 speed transmission with J-type OD I purchased on e-bay several
years ago. The J-type does not have the same mounts as the car. I am
wondering of anybody can identify it through the model numbers on the side
of the tranny:

As I recollect, the "J-type" is used on the TR-6 series, and the "A-type" is
on the -3's and-4's. But the easiest way to separate them is to look at the
operating solenoid: if the solenoid is on the left (driver's) side and is
vertically mounted, it is the older OD, and was used on the 3s and 4s; if on
the lower left side, and is horizontal then it is the newer version and was
used on the 6-cylinder engines. They are only interchangeable if you make an
adapter mounting. It's easier to put the older type in the cars with the 6
cylinder engine.

The A-Type was used on the 69-72 TR6, it changed to the J-Type during 1973.
You can buy a conversion kit from (I believe) John Esposito at Quantum
Mechanics (www.quantumechanics.com) to put the J-Type into earlier models.

I have a 4 speed transmission with J-type OD I purchased on e-bay several
years ago. The J-type does not have the same mounts as the car. I am
wondering of anybody can identify it through the model numbers on the side
of the tranny:

Chuck-I think the relevant number is, according to the TRF catalog, is stamped
on a boss on the LH side behind the clutch cross shaft for earlier models and
on top of the starter bulge on the RH side for later models. The number should
be prefixed CD, CC, or CF according to the year.

Me ol' '74-6 took me from NC to Seattle, LA, TX, and back without a whimper
last Summer.

However, over the past few months, I've been experiencing some strange
overdrive-related symptoms.
1. Long after it's warmed up (dunno if significant), it won't shift out of OD
in either 3rd or 4th. Not always.
2. While OD is selected and accelerating in 2nd, it shudders. If I go back to
first and unselect OD, things go fine.

Could it beeee
a) Fluid level? Too lazy to check that, yet. (maqana)
b) OD solenoid?
c) Gear-position switch(es)?
d) OD switch? It was replaced 2-yrs ago.
e) *gulp* Something really bad?

Just lookin' for a starting place.

First place to check is the solenoid. It could well be jamming. They get
old, and dirt gets into the space between the plunger and the barrel of the
solenoid. Most of them will make a distinct "snap" when going into and out of
operation.

You can check the operation of the switches in the transmission cover by
putting a meter to check electrical continuity when you shift gears. Third
possibility is the secondary relay. It could also be stuck. The car does not
even need to be running when doing these tests, just have the ignition on.
Check the wiring diagram to see where to put the meter. You can also use a
little light bulb and a couple of alligator clips and watch to see if the
light goes on and off.

The numbers are likely not from a TR series car. Possibly a Triumph saloon,
although Volvo fitted many thousands of J types to their 240 series. Owned a
few of them. 240s typically were retired only after at least a few hundreds
thousand miles, so your box may be worn. I recall OD only worked on 4th.
All kinds of info available about fitting either saloon or Volvo J type to a
TR6. Not a drop in.

Yes, "TR-7" was a typo.
Yes, the "q" in" manana" was actually sent as a tilde over the "n."

The description matches exactly how my 91 Accord acted when it needed a new
master cylinder. It only did it when the weather was very hot (trip to the
beach) so I lived with it for over a year. It felt like the brake pedal would
slowly go away from under my foot, but I could press harder and stop the roll
forward.

Most likely it is the master needs either rebuilding or replacing. If
rebuilding, you need to make sure the barrel of the cylinder is in no way
damaged.

Robert---Normally, when the brake pedal drops, fluid gets past the seal and leaks out somewhere. Check the area directly under where the MC is bolted to the booster. If you don't see signs of linkage, you may just have air in the system.

The booster itself could be leaking vacuum and cause one to press harder on the pedal to get the same amount of brake pad contact pressure.

Another possibility is, IF-you engage first gear when stopped, like at a traffic light- is that the clutch is dragging and pulling the car forward. To eliminate this as the cause of your 'creep', take the tranny out of gear when stopped. See what happens.

Dick

Subject: [6pack] 74 TR6 Braking issue

Hello All,

Over the last year or so I have noticed a strange braking issue on
my TR6. When I am stopped at a red light, after a few seconds the car will
start to roll if I am on anything but level ground. I can push harder on the
break and it will stop and if I pump the brakes they seem to firm up. It feels
like they loose clamping pressure. During normal stopping everything feels
fine. Do you think they need to be bled, Master cylinder needs replacing????
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Robert

Hello All

My speedometer cable came apart over the weekend - looks like the
housing wore through or caught or something. I need a new housing &
cable; I remember seeing a place that was recommended by a few listers
that made up the cables with the housing to the correct size. The one on
my car always seemed a little long but worked without the speedo needle
jumping. If anyone can remember who that is please let me know; I
thought I had saved the info but cannot find it. Thanks a bunch.

I put a pair of Joe Alexander's velocity stacks on my TR6 recently
along with his very nice covers which filter out the big chunks of
debris.

Wanting a little more protection and filtering I went looking for
something to put over the stack covers when I'm not rodding it. What
I found was that the cloth drain covers for my hot tub fit nicely with
enough resistance to not come off when at highway speed.

Don't know how much filtering goes on but it's at least more than
before and I can just shake them out when I need to and not mess with
a lot of maintenance. My oil may get a little dirtier but the engine
sure hums with the velocity stacks. I may test a few different types
of material (sponge, etc.) to put between the stack covers and the
drain cover just to see what gets caught. Still looking for that fine
line between flow and filtering. I like power but not replacing rings.

For those with Joe's velocity stacks or just interested: Part Name/
Number: Sundance Spas Drain Cover 6540-213. They are approx. 4 3/4
inches diameter and stretch just a wee bit.
