Subject: [6pack] Rebuilding Laycock clutch assembly?
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: 6pack-bounces@autox.team.net

I'm in the process of putting my car back on the road after letting it sit in
the barn for about five years due to work constraints.

It is a sort of lucky 'barn find' and I have removed mouse nests and piles of
chewed up acorns and hickory nuts from interior corners after pulling the
seats out and five years of dirt and bird droppings from the exterior.

One of the fun parts is figuring out what to do about a replacement clutch.
The A-type transmission is out of the car now and a rebuilt J-type is ready to
go in. The engine is mostly stock and the car is going to be a daily driver,
which is what I had been using it for before parking it in the barn.

I have a Laycock clutch disk and pressure plate on a spare motor that I am
wondering about rebuilding instead of using the new parts that I have.

I already had a Luk clutch disk and pressure plate with a Gunst bearing on the
shelf for a few years that I had planned to put in but am now reconsidering.

The new Luk pp has fingers that look odd to me as they aren't flat. Instead
they have a concave curve that poit upwards if it is laid face down. If the
fingers were longer they would intersect in a point somewhere back in the
transmission. Is this normal?

Any opinions on rebuilding the Laycock parts versus new Luk parts? Anyone
have any experience with clutch rebuilders that they would be willing to
share?

Thanks for any comments or suggestions.

Rob

Subject: [6pack] Stromberg question
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: 6pack-bounces@autox.team.net

Hi guys,

My new project is a 72 Spitfire. So I hope you don't mind a cross model
question or two, as I trust this list extremely.

I'm having trouble getting the carb (cute little thing only has one) adjusted
properly. I 'rebuilt' it, meaning I took it apart, cleaned it up some, and
replaced all the 'obvious' parts from a rebuild kit. I didn't use any of the
little O-rings as I wasn't certain where they went. So I'm sure I haven't done
a great job. I understand (from various websites) that the first task of
adjustment is to get the idle at about 900. When it warms up, it wants to
float up to about 2000. I have the little adjustment tool, and I noticed that
when I push the piston down with the outer thingie, the idle drops down. The
piston floats back up a bit elsewise. Something I read made me think I could
have a weak piston spring. I do have the idle screw backed all the way out.

Suggestions?

Sloane :-)

Subject: [6pack] Clutch not working
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: 6pack-bounces@autox.team.net

He is what has happened.
First, I did not run the car for 2 years. Sat in a garage.
Second, I did get her started.
Third, pushed in the clutch and tried to get it in reverse, gears started to
grind. Tried other gears and could not engage.
Fourth, bled the lines and made sure that the slave cylinder was moving. It
was moving pretty well. I didn't measure it.
Clutch still didn't disengage
Fifth, I jacked up the rear wheels and started it in gear. Wheels spun in
forward and reverse. Pulled the hand break with the clutch in and out. I
just could not get the clutch to release. Even stalled the engine with the
hand break and clutch depressed.

The clutch is probably about 15 years old, but only has about 20,000 miles on
it.

Do I have to get to the clutch or is there something else I can do to free it
up? I really don't want to pull the transmission again.

Thanks for your help.

Dale

You may want to subscribe to the Team.Net spitfires list, if you have
not already
done so.

In general the inability to get a smooth, consistent idle is due to air
leaks in the
intake system or the carb butterfly not closing properly due to linkage
issues
or being misaligned. Assuming of course, it isn't an electrical problem.

But the easiest is to check for air leaks in the manifold gaskets, so
I'd do that first.

I just went through this with my car after it sat for about five years. The
disk is frozen to the flywheel.

I had lots of room for this so i didn't runinto anything. I started the car
in first gear with the clutch depressed, which takes a good battery and a car
that starts up reasonably well. The car was moving along in first gear with
the clutch still depressed. I gave it some gas to make the car try to
accelerate and and then backed off. This was basically stressing the frozen
connection between the friction disk and the flywheel by having the clutch
pedal still pressed. After several times the clutch disk broke free and
started working again.

Best of luck!

We had this problem on my brother's 73. He's an expert at 'floating' the
clutch, truck driver lingo for not using the clutch to shift. Just driving
around, not being rough with it, it suddenly snapped free. You do have to
start it off with the key. Google Float Shifting or floating the clutch for
info. I can do it, but just not as well has he. Triumph transmissions are
especially good at this. I pretty much won't let you put it into gear in the
the RPM is right.

1. Put car in 4th gear, engine off, parking brake released

2. Have someone sit in the car with the clutch pedal depressed

3. Have 2-3 guys rock the car back and forth until the clutch disk becomes
unstuck from the pressure plate.

4. Repeat each spring.

Dale - On vehicles that have a removable inspection plate at the bottom of
the bell housing, one can have an assistant push on the clutch pedal while
using a sharp chisel or other thin blade to pry the clutch disk away from
the flywheel. That trick has worked for me on several older trucks after
attempting with no success to free up the offending disk by gently launching
the vehicle against something solid like a loading dock or a tree. Alas, no
inspection plates on a TR6. I have often thought about locating the proper
spot for a 3/4" pipe plug on the bell housing for such an occasion.

The clutch is probably about 15 years old, but only has about 20,000 miles
on it.

Do I have to get to the clutch or is there something else I can do to free
it up? I really don't want to pull the transmission again.

Thanks for your help.

Dale

Hey list!

No doubt this subject has been discussed before but is there some consensus
about a quality car cover for the Six? I know there are different grades of
covers, depending upon whether the car is stored in a garage or outdoors
but
is there a brand with better made construction and fit/quality at a
reasonable
price? I'd be interested in hearing any related feedback...

Thanks!

Thanks, Bill. It's hard to judge quality by price.

The NOAH cover is the first one of 20 I see here:

http://www.autoanything.com/car-covers/Triumph/TR6/111A50166A10004A0A50A959A1
.aspx

It would seem one could spend more for the covers other than the NOAH
but, perhaps, not get a better cover for the extra $$.

Cheers!

Dave

Andrew

Try putting a roll pin in the external line to the head. This will
still allow oil to feed to the valve train but give the rest of the engine
more pressure. I have heard that the external line over feeds the valve train
and this fix serves two purposes. Slowing the amount of oil to the top end and
giving much needed pressure to the rest of the engine.

Subject: [6pack] Help needed, TR250 engine rebuild oil
pressure problems

Hello Triumph problem solvers.

I nearly have my TR250
ready for Triumphest/VTR after an engine rebuild. I'm
trying to solve a
problem now with maintaining consistent oil pressure. When
I first ran the
car after the rebuild, the 20 minutes at 2000 rpm start, I had
Castrol 5W30
and ZDDP additive. After the engine really got up to
temperature, I had
trouble with maintaining oil pressure, dropping way down
close to zero at
idle. A mechanic friend of mine checked it out with me and
with the rocker
cover off, we saw little flow at the rockers at idle. I had
an external
oiling line on my shelf so I added that and saw very good flow at
start up
when oil pressure was about 65 and settled down to just under 50 as
it started
to get warm, but continued to drop to the same near zero level once
it was at
temperature.

Today I changed the oil to 20W50 Castrol with Lucas ZDDP
break-in additive.
Same symptoms. I drove the car about four miles near my
house and at
temperature, I was running at 20-25 psi when driving, dropping to
near zero at
stop signs. When I arrived home, I removed the quite hot valve
cover oil fill
cap and started the car. Very little oil was dancing around,
if any, at idle.
I revved the car a bit and saw sufficient oil flowing and
splattering in
there.

Now I don't know what to do. I have the braided oil
pressure line from TSI.
I don't think my gauge is bad with oil flow symptoms
consistent with the
pressure readings. Could the oil pressure regulator be an
issue? Mine is
relatively new from BPNW. I do have a second one I could swap
in. The oil
pump was new with the rebuild.

Any advice or guidance is
appreciated.

Andrew,
Contact the person who rebuilt the engine. The oil pressure problem you
describe will not be solved with a roll pin, or by changing the viscosity
of the oil. It very well could be a bad oil pump. It could be defective or
improperly installed. If the one you removed was up to spec and working
fine, that's the first thing I would revert back to. I assume all the
bearing tolerances were checked with plastic-gauge, are correct and were
properly installed. I'm sure you checked for the screw that holds the
rockers in place. If it's missing, oil to the rocker assembly is greatly
compromised, but even this would not account for the oil pressure you're
reporting since the oil pressure is read at the block.
Please let us know what you find.
Best,
Bob Fabie

Thanks to all for the great responses to my oil pressure issue. With all of
your responses I have a nice progression of items to check from least to most
invasive.
To answer several questions you have asked for clarification, here are my
answers.
Spin on oil filter with Wix 51516 filter.
No oil cooler.
Engine block was magnafluxed.
Goodparts roller rockers with screw in tact.
New oil pump replaced somewhat new pump that had scoring. I did not check the
clearances of the pump prior or during installation.
No cam shaft bearings.
pistons are 40 over with 10.25:1 compression per Kas's measurements in the
prep manual.

I will update the group when I have a chance to investigate further later this
week.
Thanks and I hope to see many of you at Triumphest/VTR!

a washer under the spring to act as a shim. If your pressure readings go up
then you need a new spring in there.

above statement that the new parts are not always equal in quality to the old

KNOW that there have been some issues with the new pumps. I don't remember the
particulars, but some people had complete failures with the currently
available pumps. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere (6-Pack Forum maybe) that
blueprinting the oem pumps was actually preferred using the new pumps.

Subject: Re: [6pack] Help needed, TR250 engine rebuild oil pressure problems
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: 6pack-bounces@autox.team.net

I have a TR250 that I have had since new. It was showing the same
problems for some time before I finally did something about it. I
assumed the bearings were worn out, so at 110,000 miles I tore it down
for a rebuild. It was in excellent shape considering the mileage (with
no overdrive). The bearing journals showed a small amount of wear, but
were well within the wear limits and the cylinders were showing marginal
taper. This is a mostly stock motor, so we went 0.020 over (or maybe
0.030) on the cylinders and installed new bearings, but did not grind
the crank or install cam bearings. With the small amount of wear
elsewhere, I thought cam bearings could wait until the next time around.
We put a new oil pump in it, because the TR250 pump is said to be
marginal. After the rebuild, it was still showing some of these
symptoms but to a lesser degree. I got new relief valve springs, both
stock and "heavy duty". The relief valve on these engines does not seem
to be up to the task, because with 20-50 oil, it pegs the pressure gauge
at startup, but then settles down to about 40 - 45 psi at 2,500 rpm (on
a 100 degree day) with the heavy duty springs. The pressure is about 5
psi less than with the stock spring. I believe the manual calls for
something like 40 to 60 psi at 2,000. It still shows the very low
pressure at 800 rpm idle. The relief valve is probably not open at
idle. I believe this is just a basic engine design issue. Perhaps since
this engine grew from a much smaller one, the oiling system did not keep
pace. Cam bearings may help the problem, but installation is nontrivial
since the block must be line bored. As long as you are getting good flow
to the rockers at running speed, I would not worry too much about rocker
lubrication at idle. I do not use an external line to the rockers,
because that would further reduce the oil pressure and oil flow to the
bearings, which is much more critical than the rockers. The best
solution would be a higher volume pump. The later TR6 pumps are
supposed to be better, but I couldn't tell any major difference. Is
there a higher volume pump available? A larger capacity relief valve
would also be an improvement.

Ed Barnard mentioned a cracked block issue. I believe mine was crack
tested, but will have to check with the machine shop.

Beware the French Blue 74 TR6 on eBay located in Wilmington, NC

I spoke to a gentleman this morning who has seen the car and says it has bad
frame rust where the trailing arms attach. The seller knows this and does
not
disclose it in the listing. Seller has not responded to my question "Do you
have any pictures of the trailing arm to frame attachment areas?" Which I
sent
him about 10 hours ago.

Could somebody post this on the 6-Pack Forum?

Thanks,

I bought an Infiniti Coupe on eBay. 1000 miles away in Newark, NJ

Turned out to be a long term serial TR6 owner and we had several mutual
friends.

But I wouldn't recommend it unless you live a charmed life like I do.

I ended up with a great car and a new friend....ymmv

I once bought a TR6 on ebay that had a V8 (it was during my crazy
stage). Fortunately (for me) in last minute tuning it the owner wedged
a penny in the butterfly to keep it open and of course it sucked the
penny into a cylinder. I was on my way to pick it up when that
happened and it was making a horrible noise when I got there. The
sheepish owner gave me back my earnest money and I dodged a bullet as
the car wasn't what I'd hoped it would be overall anyhow.

That's one of the reasons I've done surrogate inspections for 6Pack
since I know how burned you can get without a unbiased opinion. It's
great fun because you have an excuse to go look at Triumphs that are
for sell and not end up buying it yourself.

I've purchased 6 Triumphs on eBay and never been burned. But 2 of them I had
seen in person and new exactly what I was getting. The other 4 were cheap
enough that I really couldn't get burned. You do have to be VERY careful, but
few people are really as deliberately misleading as this guy.

Cheers,

Gives ebay sellers a bad name or just reinforces what many of us know,
unfortunately, from experience! Don't make the same mistake that I did.

Marketplace Safety Tip
a.. Keep your money safe - never pay for items with cash or instant
money transfer services, such as Western Union or MoneyGram. In the past
some
sellers have exploited these payment methods in order to defraud buyers, so
eBay has banned them from the site.
b.. Received a Second Chance Offer email? Double check that it's
genuine: Second Chance Offer emails come directly from eBay and are shown
in
your My Messages.
c.. Trade safely. Beware of anyone who contacts you about buying or
selling outside of eBay. When you trade outside of eBay, you're not able to
leave feedback or take advantage of protection programs and case resolution
tools available on eBay. Report an inappropriate email.
d.. eBay helps guard your privacy and online safety when you use our
messaging tools. If you and the member you're contacting haven't bought or
sold from each other recently, our tools may make both of your email

A Club member is restoring a Triumph Stag and is looking for a way to
remove the rock hard adhesive the factory used to glue the carpet in
place. Some solvents he tried didn't touch it. Any suggestions?

Bill;

A good heat gun, carefully applied, along with patience and a
putty knife/scraper tool can often do the trick...

An answer that is a lot of circular logic and hooey.

 >>>I don't know if there's rust if I don't look for it and I'm not
going to look for it because I don't have a lift.<<<

What a dodge that is. I pity the unsuspecting victim that ends up
buying this car.

Hello everyone,

I hate to bother you, I really do, but I am out of ideas. Back in May I drove
my 75 TR6 in from storage. An hour on the highway and it was smooth as silk.
Drove fine the next day then the day after it would crank but not start.
After much work it will run fine for 5-10 minutes then starts to bog on low
rpm then stalls and will not start. Here is how I spent my summer:

Fuel:

  * Cleaned lines and replaced filters
  * Checked both electric and mechanical fuel pump (connected in line)
  *   Rebuilt carbs
  * Bowls are full of fuel
  *   New fuel used
  * Vent in tank is clear
Electric:

  *   New plugs
  *   Wires one year old
  *   New distributor
  *   New electronic ignition
  *   New coil
  *   Bright blue spark
  * Timing at idle (10 BTDC)

Other:

  * Cleaned and synced temperate compensators
  * Battery seems to be OK but is old
  * I had a retard unit, now an advance unit. I plugged the old port (under
the carb) and am not sure which port to put the advance hose on (port on top
of carbs by the manifold doesn't seem to do much). Would not having the
vacuum advance set up properly stop the car, only when warm? I can't think
why that would happen.

I am out of ideas and things to replace. Snow is six weeks away and I won't
be able to get it back to storage. Any suggestions from your vast experience
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.

<Disclaimer-not a mechanic but like to try>

If it's getting spark, will it fire with starting fluid? If they're getting
spark and fuel, they should fire.

Try taking out the petronix ignition and put the points back in. Remember to
set the gap and have your CHAMPION plugs set at .025

Errors-To: 6pack-bounces@autox.team.net

Did the guy with the oil pressure issue on his new 250 motor ever get this
sorted? inquiring minds want to know.

I'm hoping to do a repeat on the
San Diego mechanic with (300,000?) miles on his 250 and never did the bottom
end. In the Triumph magazine article he said he just does regular oil
changes with STP. I've shaved the head and a hotter cam so I may have added
additional stress to the engine. my oil pressure hasn't deteriorated in 16
years of ownerhip.

Cheers, Bruce Simms 73 tr6

Hmm, that sounds like 'cooled down, it started fine'. Maybe vapor lock? Next
time just pop the hood and wait 10-15 minutes.

Thanks, I will get it to stall out and see if starter fluid fires. That
should help isolate if it is a fuel or a spark issue. I am having trouble
isolating the problem. Last night when it stalled I swapped out the coil and
it started. I put the old coil back and it started as well!

Hi Andy,

Have you checked your head torque? The fact that you're losing oil pressure and boiling over leads me to suspect you've got a bad head gasket, or poor/uneven head torque that manifests itself only when the head gets hot. Check to see if you've got oil in the water or water in the oil. The fact that the engine makes oil pressure but then loses it when the engine is warm makes me think you don't have a bearing or oil pump problem. Colin '75

I've re-entered the hobby and have a question about taking the top down. I
seem to remember s procedure from years ago about folding the side wings a
certain way so the windows ddn't get damaged. Is this information still
available?

Also, a suggestion for a gas lead additive, maybe something that can be
purchased locally.

I am sure there is a utube or some other description on line.
I was taught to unsnap the cover entirely (along the body) after releasing the
front clamps, then pull the cover back away from the frame bows. I fold the
side windows in before I tuck the cover down. Haven't done it for a while and
don't have it in front of me. Seems like it is fairly obvious how to fold the
sides in without putting hardware against the window plastic. You want to
avoid that.
The most important bit is to remember to pull the cover back away from the
bows and especially away from the folding side rails. Otherwise those side
rails will tear the cover. My two cars both came with torn tops because the
previous owner tried to fold it down without pulling the cover back. :(

I agree with Grego about his procedure. I personally add one step on my 1976
TR6. After releasing the side snaps and front clamps, I pull the top away
from the bows. I then stow the hardware before folding in the side windows
and then folding the back over the folded in side windows. The cover will
then easily fit over the folded top and I have never had an issue with either
the top or "windows" being damaged. If you keep the top from being wrinkled
as it is stowed, simply folded it will last a long time.

Certainly good points raised. I used to just fold mine in as described. On
my TR3, the whole top comes away and I put it into my trunk. As a precaution
to avoid more scratches I use a terry cloth towel (not embroidered ;-) )
After quite a few years it has not harmed it, But that's just my experience,
not saying I speak for all.

Robert,

I don't know if anyone has tried this or not. I would probably advise
against it and my sense is that if it were a good practice either the top
manufacturers or someone on the list would give a personal testimonial. My
experience is that the vinyl windows do very well against the top material
without this padding. I have had other situations where vinyl of various
types gets a pattern embedded into it when pressed against a cloth material,
particularly when it goes through a few heating cycles, as these tops do in
the summer days and nights. This may or may not happen with the vinyl in
these tops. I really don't know enough about it to make a recommendation,
but in over 15 years of folding and unfolding my top, I have never had a
problem with the vinyl windows. As they say, your mileage may vary and this
is only my $.02 worth.

I agree with Grego about his procedure. I personally add one step on my
1976
TR6. After releasing the side snaps and front clamps, I pull the top
away
from the bows. I then stow the hardware before folding in the side windows
and then folding the back over the folded in side windows. The cover will
then easily fit over the folded top and I have never had an issue with
either
the top or "windows" being damaged. If you keep the top from being
wrinkled
as it is stowed, simply folded it will last a long time.

I am sure there is a utube or some other description on line.
I was taught to unsnap the cover entirely (along the body) after releasing
the front clamps, then pull the cover back away from the frame bows. I fold
the side windows in before I tuck the cover down. Haven't done it for a
while and don't have it in front of me. Seems like it is fairly obvious how
to fold the sides in without putting hardware against the window plastic.
You want to avoid that.
The most important bit is to remember to pull the cover back away from the
bows and especially away from the folding side rails. Otherwise those side
rails will tear the cover. My two cars both came with torn tops because the
previous owner tried to fold it down without pulling the cover back. :(

I've re-entered the hobby and have a question about taking the top down.
Iseem
to remember s procedure from years ago about folding the side wings acertain
way so the windows ddn't get damaged. Is this information
stillavailable? Also, a suggestion for a gas lead additive, maybe something
that can bepurchased locally.

This information is available... in the Owner's Manual. If you don't have
one, you can get a reprint.

You don't need it. Period. I've been using no-lead for more than 100k
miles. I've had zero problems due to the no-lead. Anyone that tells you
otherwise should back up thier claim with actual first-hand evidence.

Great video. Note there are two schools of thought. I think someone had
indicated they fold their sides in before folding down the middle, and I (like
the video) do it the other way. Fold it all back, then once the frame is down,
fold it all back toward the front, then fold the sides in and then the middle
down. The result is the 'ears' of the corners are on top of everything.

One step I have always done is to zip out the rear window and let it hang down
first. Then it's not involved in any of the folding.

You're not installing a new top, but while the soft topic is open: Have you
ever noticed that the inner edge of the corner windows get's folded no matter
how hard you try? The video makes it look like it's possible to not fold that
corner, but I have no idea how this can be done. What I did on the 73 was to
put an extra snap. I had noticed that Spitfires have 4 snaps on each side, so
now I have 4 snaps on each side too. I just made that 4th spot a snap too.
This way I can completely fold the corner windows in on the material between
it and the rear window and never fold the corner of plastic.

Sloane :o)

I suppose everyone has a different method, what we do is to unlatch, unsnap,
place a folded shop towel on the wheel arches, lay the top on the trunk lid.
Now you have to two latches pointing up, these we cover with another folded
towel (folded twice for thickness).bring the top forward (we don't unzip the
rear window, cover the two small triangles with a "custom" cover (made from
the corner of an pillow case) fold the over the top and stuff everything down,
pull up and fasten the hood cover. Done.

Shell ultra in my area is 91 octane and no ethanol. with my head shaved to
about 9.5 and distributor set-up, I get run-on with the 91, even if I add an
octane booster. Advance at idle set to 14 BTDC as per distributor
rebuilder's advice. I typically use Shell Ultra in the 6 and all my small
gas engines.

There is 94 octane gas available, but with up to 10%
ethanol. No run-on with a tank of the 94 octane.

I think there's s product
that counteracts the ethanol's effect on rubber and other vulnerable parts in
our fuel system, but do I really need to go that far.

Thoughts?
