Hey all!

I am about to replace the windscreen capping on my Six and am faced with
the
familiar but challenging task of trying to drill-out old rivets. I have to
confess,
the process has never been an easy or efficient one for me. Does anyone
know
a well-proven/smarter way to drill-out and remove old rivets?

Thanks for any insights....

Subject: [6pack] Gear selector shaft detents
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: 6pack-bounces@autox.team.net

I am removing the shafts to drill and tap for overdrive switches...
The manual says to unscrew the screw plugs that hold the springs and
balls, but my 76 does not have screwed plugs, they appear to be
interference fit plugs, see this pic...

http://tinyurl.com/oufsve6

So there is no way that I can see to get the plugs out.

I did remove one of the shafts and of course the ball fell into the
shaft tube and left the spring sticking into the tube. I can get the
spring and ball back into what I think is the right position with a
screwdriver and seal puller, but haven't been able to get it back into
the hole to allow the shaft to pass under it.

So two questions, first, what's the best way to handle the other two
shafts and not make the same mistake... and second, how do I get the
ball back in?

Any help appreciated

John North

Go to the maintenance page at vtr -
http://www.vtr.org/maintain-index.shtml and look at the end of
"Rebuilding the Triumph TR Transmission Part 2". It explains how to
overhaul a top cover and drill one for overdrive switches. For the late
boxes you have to drill out the plugs. You may be able to match the
plugs at your local auto parts store or drill and tap them for plugs
like the early covers. Top covers are probably one of the most
neglected transmission parts.

Ok, I see that these plugs are NA at TRF, Moss and Vic Brit... I
looked over the Mcaster Carr site, couldn't find what I need although
they have just about everything known to man. Anybody got a lead on
where I can get them?

I was able to get the loose ball back in the shaft using a dummy shaft
about 3" long with the end cut at a 45 degree angle. I used 1/2" rod
from Home Depot. I pushed it in from the back using the real shaft
while easing the ball back into the slot with a screwdriver from the
front. This allowed me to get back to square one with all three
shafts in place and operating.

So then I extended the dummy shaft idea and made three about 5" long
and inserted them from the front as I withdrew the shafts. These
kept the detent balls in their channel. I shook out the two
interlock balls that prevent selecting more than one gear at a time as
I inserted the dummy shafts.

So now I have the top cover clear and can drill and tap...

You may have been able to drill&tap the holes without removing the rods,
depending on how much lead was on the tap.

A mechanic/restoration guy taught me to use the exact sized drill bit for the size of rivet. Can't recall the size but essentially it is big enough to cut some of the side wall of the rivet. Worked every time for me. Of course the is always a stubborn rivet that requires a little angle drilling. But not much.
Hope this helps some. Practice and you'll find the correct drill hit size.

Thanks, James, and all those who responded, on and off list.
I've had a number of recommendations, from drilling to Dremel
tool suggestions. God knows, the windscreen cap offers plenty
of opportunity to practice using every method recommended to
me! I'll let the list know which method/drill size worked best.

Cheers all and Merry Christmas!!

Can you give a time frame? There are some good ones like the Gathering
in North Carolinia, which has set a date yet. Also how far would you like to
travel?

he is leaving for germany (poor guy b hebs in management at the mercedes
plant in alabama where he gets a cut rate deal on a lease and then, I just
pity him b he has to turn it in for a new one when it hits 8000 miles). so
he will be leaving last weekend in april, and be gone for 6 to 8 weeks.

Ibd prefer not more than about 5 hours from Birmingham.

"The Gathering" is in Dobson, NC. Unfortunately 7 hours from Birmingham. The
web site is www.triumphclub.org, and it's typically the 3rd Saturday in April,
normally 200+ cars. If you come for the weekend there is a Blue Ridge tour on
Friday afternoon and a really fun autocross on Sunday morning.

Subject: [6pack] I need a measurement

Errors-To: 6pack-bounces@autox.team.net

Hi,

If you have a used late-style TR6 head gasket laying around, I need a
favor. I need to know the thickness of the fire ring (after being
crushed).

I had a TR6 block decked to true it and they took off .006", but now the
recesses measure about .012" - I think I need to have the recesses re-cut,
but I want to know how much crush we can get away with.

I know the answer, but I want an actual measurement from a used head
gasket.

In a total lapse of good judgement, I actually threw out the one I took
off this engine. GO figure. Probably the first time I ever cleaned up a
job before it was done.

:-)

Thanks in advance.

Bob;

I rebuilt my the engine on my 74-1/2 this fall (engine overheat) and still
have the old gasket. The fire rings on my used gasket varies in thickness
across the cylinders from 0.065 to 0.072". I had my head decked and they
removed 0.009. A new Payen gasket worked fine. I never gave a second
thought to the fire ring thickness and would suspect you have nothing to
worry about.

Cheers and Happy New Year!!
