Yea, been casually looking for about 7 plus years. Almost all need restoring. Now that I live in the Pacific Northwest I thought it would be nice to have a hardtop. We only have 3 months of perfect weather.
Plus I love the looks of the top.
Thanks for all the input on pricing.

Cheers

Anyone have a lead on a rear bumper for a late model 1976? The plan is to re chrome the front bumper and not put on the overriders. My rear bumper has rusted through a little and not sure if it can be repaired.

I haven't checked with
Some of the parts places. Maybe I can find one somewhere.

Just a few additional comments to the ones I've already shared concerning
the hardtop.

* it's a PITA to install and remove the top
* the car drives completely different with the hardtop; the car is stiffer
and, I believe, handles curves better
* I've had my hardtop for over 12 years; I love the idea of having it, but
99% of the time, my TR6 is a convertible.

Have fun!

Just a note concerning the removal of the rubber bumpers from the rear
bumper. If you do this - and I have - you will need to install 1/2 inch
spacers (approximately) between the car body and the mounting surface of
the bumper.

Restored - probably $1200 to $1500.

That's what they seem to be fetching on flea-bay.

Even at that price, the seller is loosing money.

I may have started this chain by asking about hardtop values. I was asked
to help price parts for a huge Estate sale here in Michigan. A WW2 vet
could no longer manage in his house and so his lifelong collection is being
sold later this week. Lots and lots of Triumph stuff. The sale is
advertised on the Detroit Craigslist page.

I spent all afternoon there and the most impressive collection was a room
full of new TR6 parts. The TR6 hardtop did not have glass or mounting
hardware and I suggested a price of $400.

I have followed the conversation on the TR6 hard tops with interest.
The group from our club (Detroit Triumph) that I usually drive with all
have the hard tops. They usually put them on in the late summer for the
cooler months.
I have had 3 of these tops in varying degrees of condition. The last top
I found is in perfect condition but I have yet to put it on my TR6. It
has been sitting on my TR250 Project car for the last 15 or so years.
Maybe I'll paint it this spring to match my car.
If you can find one of these cheap and complete they are good resale
investments.
Now the top I am really interested in is a Surrey Top for my TR250.

Glenn
Too many Triumphs and Parts/ Would you like to buy some??

Subject: [6pack] Windshield Frame and Commission Plate
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: 6pack-bounces@autox.team.net

So years ago I had a leak around my WS seal. When I went to replace the bottom
seal I noticed that the frame had some rusted spots. So I decided to simply get
a good used (excellent) WS Frame.Well, I forgot about the commission plate
(VIN).dang it.I still have the original WS, but here's my issue.I thought the
'pop rivets' were the same as the one on the door jam...meaning the metal
would be hollowand new pop rivets could attach the plate again.not so on the
stupid WS frame. (which is retarded to me...the WS frame is NOT part of the
car chassis like the door frame)I started drill off the pop rivets on the used
WS and now realize that i will have to use the original WS Frame after all.
Has anyone dealt with this?
The tab on the original frame is weak from idiot glass people or someone prior
to me bending the tab back. So that is another issue to get it reenforced so
it doesn't break off and DMV doesn't have a cow.
What a pain.
Any words of experience/wisdom/support?
cheers.

Doubt the DMV will even know it's missing if you show them the plate on the
door jamb. You could always just push your old one under the gasket for
inspection if you think they will.

I decided to restore the original WS frame.
A little background.
I realized I had a had a problem when I went to the DMV and immediately they were looking at the WS plate.
I totally forgot about that.
And since I placed with an excellent condition WS frame years ago, I had a commission plate from another car. Crap.
DMV woman freaked out!
After consulting the reg book and a coworker they decided to stamp my title with something. I stopped them.
No explanation from me about unbolting the rusted frame and replacing with a solid one made them understand. I knew I was getting. I where. I got my paperwork and
I left. Quickly.

I was going to pop rivet the plate to the good replacement. But sadly there is absolutely no freakin room under the WS frame on the sides.

Oh well.

Bottom line. I hate the DMV even more. Hah.

James,

You may have to remove the current frame and install the correct vin
plate that matches your door plate.

When I restored my 6, I was working on the frame and noticed the plate
on the inside of the WS frame. I had no idea what it was at the time
until I asked a few questions on the 6 pack forum.

At that point I removed it and cleaned it up before re-installing the
plate.

The DMV here in NY never asked to look at either plate when I went in to
register the car. I took my paperwork down and came away with the title
and plates. The car never left my garage.

In fact, any car, bike that I have registered was never inspected for
correct VIN tags by the dmv.

I am surprised that your dmv even knew about the ws vin plate even existed.

You would think they could do a search for both vin #s to insure the car
is not stolen or whatever.

Yea. I am restoring the original frame with the correct vin plate. And then put on new vinyl and glass.

I don't think in Maryland they ever checked the vin. When I bought the car 22 years ago. But oregon, they do. And to top it off I have to pay $7 for them to do it!
As I understand it, DMV has no way to check for stolen vehicles. Recently a jag e-type was found after 32 years from when it was stolen. And the only way it got found was because it was sold to someone overseas and was checked at the port authorities.

Oregon has to be one of the most backward ass places with some things and then so dang strict on others. Eg.: I can register a car that spills toxic fluids and falling apart but as long as it passes emissions (1975 and newer) all is good.

So how were you able to reattach the WS vin? When I took the one off the spare frame I noticed there was no way to use pop rivets to reattach. No room inside the frame.
