Subject: [6pack] 72 4 speed transmission rear seal
From: Bob Labuz via 6pack <6pack@autox.team.net>
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: 6pack-bounces@autox.team.net

Hello,

Posted this to 6 pack but only one reply and that was inconclusive.

So:

Can the rear seal of the standard transmission be replaced from
underneath the car? Or does the transmission cover have to be removed
and accessed from inside the car.
Thanks.

Bob

If you are talking about the rear seal at the end of the tail housing, yes, it can be done from underneath.

Don't see how that should be a problem. Just unbolt the propshaft from
the transmission. Remove flange from output shaft. Pry out the old
seal and install a new one.

Bob
It is better to remove the trans cover. This way the drive shaft will come =
out easier. Trying from underneath the exhaust would have to be removed and=
you would still have a problem with the driveshaft.

Hello,

I needed to order a new fan belt for the 6 after installing my spare
last night.

Just received a note that the package has been shipped. Good news.

But, using the tracking # provided, the shipment originated in DOVER, MN
55929

What is up with that? Did TRF move?

Bob

It turns out that the USPS is indeed in error. Albert said that they
have made the USPS aware of the problem but they say the problem can't
be fixed. Yes another govt. snafu.

TRF did not open a mid west office! They are still in PA.

I believe one list member did suggest a USPS snafu. You were correct!

Bob

Someone hacked into the Team.Net web server, through another domain I host, it appears.
No real damage that I can see, other than creating web logs that filled the filesystem
and brought a number of things to a halt. Fun.

I'll be working on it for a while. Service may just go away without notice, no mail, no
archives, nothing. I'll try to keep the downtimes and single user mode to a minimum, please
bear with me as I get things back to what passes as normal at Team.Net.

This might be a red herring but on several occasions I have had the clutch disk stick to the flywheel. Usually after extended storage. This requires a bit of abuse to get it unstuck. Brian Alwin 72 TR6

Have you made sure that the breather hole in the cap of the clutch fluid
reservoir is open? It sometimes plugs with dried fluid + crud. My '72 is
long gone, but I love sharing ongoing misery.

In answer to your question, the hole in the release lever that is closest t=
o the shaft will give you the most travel. That said, use the middle hole. =
This isn't your problem. Your first problem was that it wouldn't shift into=
second. Gear. Presumably it was shifting in and out of all the other gears=
, in which case, you don't have a hydraulic problem.=20

You say it worsened to the point where it wouldn't go into any gear. What w=
as the clutch pedal feeling like at this point? Had its behavior changed si=
nce you left on your trip to CVS?=20

If the master cylinder is as old as the slave, and you lost 1/4" of fluid f=
rom the clutch reservoir over the course of a short drive, inspect for flui=
d leaks from the master. It may be bypassing. Look inside the car where the=
cylinders come through the firewall. This is where you'll usually see the =
first signs of a leak. If the master cylinder appears dry, you're lucky. Is=
the clutch the same? 1/4" of fluid went somewhere though there's a slim ch=
ance you just had some air left over from your bleeding that has sorted its=
elf out with some use, and sucked in the fluid.=20

Another lister mentioned the release lever/shaft. The fork that attaches to=
that shaft, which holds the throwout bearing (or "release bearing"), is he=
ld onto the release shaft with a screw that is known to break. Savvy knuckl=
eheads drill the fork and shaft and put an extra pin in, when replacing the=
y have the tranny out. Safely jack up the car, disconnect the slave push ro=
d from the release lever and use whatever's handy (pipe is nice) to move th=
e release lever by hand. As you push it backwards, it will travel freely fo=
r about 1/4 inch. It shouldn't travel more than that. More on this in a min=
ute. You should feel the lever resist your pressure. The throwout bearing i=
s now against the clutch pressure plate. Keep pushing the lever backward an=
d you should feel constant pressure as it travels to the end of its range, =
This pressure is that of the clutch pressure plate diaphragm (spring). If y=
ou can move the lever backward without much resistance or if it feels jerky=
and rough, it's likely that the screw has busted and the fork is moving on=
the shaft. This can be weird because sometimes the fork shifts on the leve=
r more than at other times, when the screw breaks. If it is broken, it will=
feel just plain wrong. You'll know.=20

If there is excessive travel of the lever when you first start pushing on i=
t, before you feel the throw out bearing contact the pressure plate, check =
the master and slave cylinder push rods. If the holes where they pin to the=
clutch pedal and the release lever respectively are worn and oval-shaped, =
it is possible that the hydraulics and release shaft/fork pin are fine but =
the release fork just isn't traveling far enough to completely release the =
pressure plate when you tromp on the clutch pedal. This has happened to me.=
If you used the new push rod that came with the slave cylinder, you should=
be fine but check the master cylinder push rod.=20

The other possibility, and this has happened to me, twice (!!!), is that th=
e pressure plate itself has failed. This usually doesn't happen suddenly, t=
hough, so we'll leave that genie in the bottle until you check out the othe=
r stuff.=20

Good Luck=20

You either have a bad clutch slave or master cylinder or the clutch fork pi=
n has broken. If pumping the clutch repeatedly makes it better then hydraul=
ic. You can look under the car (on a lift or well placed jack stands) and o=
bseven the range of motion of the slave rod and lever it is attached to. It=
should have a little play, but then keep moving through the whole clutch p=
edal depression. If it doesn't once again hydraulics. If it does appear to =
move all the way through the pedal depression it could be a broken pin.=20

Have you made sure that the breather hole in the cap of the clutch fluid=20
reservoir is open? It sometimes plugs with dried fluid + crud. My '72 is=20
long gone, but I love sharing ongoing misery.=20

Dear fellow knuckle heads ( for owning these demon Triumphs) :))=20

I changed the slave cylinder (clutch), bled it, bla, blah, bla . Due to my=
=20
overall=20
health, the room between the car and my garage wall, and mental health=20
it took me quite a while ( months ) to finish=20
by any competent mechanic, the two hour job.=20
Purchased my '74 TR6 in 1998. Ok, so much for the back round info. I took=
=20
it for a short drive=20
just to test my work, it worked well. It sat two weeks before I bravely=20
set out on a 2 mile round=20
trip to CVS. Turning off the main road into the parking lot and !!!=20
SURPRISE !!!! it wouldn't go into 2nd gear.=20
It wasn't pretty driving home but got it into the yard. Wouldn't go into=20
any gear.=20
The only thing I could think of besides toping off the clutch fluid, down=
=20
1/4", Would possibly=20
be the clutch lever which has three holes in it. I don't remember which=20
hole=20
I used. Assuming I had it in the center hole, which hole would move the=20
clutch most (and hopefully)=20
make the damn thing work. I'm tired of being afraid to drive it and have=20
absolutely NO MORE MONEY to spend on repairs.=20
Probably spent $3,000 in the last year and a half.=20

the release lever that is closest to the shaft will give you the most trav=
el. That said, use the middle hole. This isn't your problem. Your first pro=
blem was that it wouldn't shift into second. Gear. Presumably it was shifti=
ng in and out of all the other gears, in which case, you don't have a hydra=
ulic problem.</div><div><br></div><div>You say it worsened to the point whe=
re it wouldn't go into any gear. What was the clutch pedal feeling like at =
this point? Had its behavior changed since you left on your trip to CVS?&nb=
sp;</div><div><br></div><div>If the master cylinder is as old as the slave,=
and you lost 1/4" of fluid from the clutch reservoir over the course of a =
short drive, inspect for fluid leaks from the master. It may be bypassing. =
Look inside the car where the cylinders come through the firewall. This is =
where you'll usually see the first signs of a leak. If the master cylinder =
appears dry, you're lucky. Is the clutch the same? 1/4" of fluid went somew=
here though there's a slim chance you just had some air left over from your=
bleeding that has sorted itself out with some use, and sucked in the fluid=
.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>Another lister mentioned the release lever=
/shaft. The fork that attaches to that shaft, which holds the throwout bear=
ing (or "release bearing"), is held onto the release shaft with a screw tha=
t is known to break. Savvy knuckleheads drill the fork and shaft and put an=
extra pin in, when replacing they have the tranny out. Safely jack up the =
car, disconnect the slave push rod from the release lever and use whatever'=
s handy (pipe is nice) to move the release lever by hand. As you push it ba=
ckwards, it will travel freely for about 1/4 inch. It shouldn't travel more=
than that. More on this in a minute. You should feel the lever resist your=
pressure. The throwout bearing is now against the clutch pressure plate. K=
eep pushing the lever backward and you should feel constant pressure as it =
travels to the end of its range, This pressure is that of the clutch pressu=
re plate diaphragm (spring). If you can move the lever backward without muc=
h resistance or if it feels jerky and rough, it's likely that the screw has=
busted and the fork is moving on the shaft. This can be weird because some=
times the fork shifts on the lever more than at other times, when the screw=
breaks. If it is broken, it will feel just plain wrong. You'll know.</div>=
<div><br></div><div>If there is excessive travel of the lever when you firs=
t start pushing on it, before you feel the throw out bearing contact the pr=
essure plate, check the master and slave cylinder push rods. If the holes w=
here they pin to the clutch pedal and the release lever respectively are wo=
rn and oval-shaped, it is possible that the hydraulics and release shaft/fo=
rk pin are fine but the release fork just isn't traveling far enough to com=
pletely release the pressure plate when you tromp on the clutch pedal. This=
has happened to me. If you used the new push rod that came with the slave =
cylinder, you should be fine but check the master cylinder push rod.</div><=
div><br></div><div>The other possibility, and this has happened to me, twic=
e (!!!), is that the pressure plate itself has failed. This usually doesn't=
happen suddenly, though, so we'll leave that genie in the bottle until you=
check out the other stuff.</div><div><br></div><div>Good Luck</div><div>Co=

Colin, thanks for your input. While writing a reply, my clumsy fingers hit something and my writing disappeared. All who responded; thanks. I may take the rest of my life to go through your suggestions:)). The day I bought the car in Charleston WVa I drove it into Southern Ohio toy aunts. I stopped once for a sandwich and it was harder to get in gear, then as I was turning in to her house it did the same thing as now. The mechanic up there didn't say it was a big deal, fixed it and that was that was that. Hasn't acted up since. Out of habit I just normally pump the clutch pedal before starting. The release fork sounds ominous. Is it? I've got too much invested in this car to drive it into the river, but not enough $$ to let my actual British mechanic fix it. I'll piddle with it before making it a "barn car".

Subject: [6pack] manifold studs and powder coating

Can anyone tell me which way the manifold studs go into the head of my
'75 Tr6? Does the short end or the longer end go into the head?

Also I recently had my water pump housing powder coated. They coated
the block and thermostat housing mating surfaces. I tried to wire brush
the coating off but only ended up giving them a different finished
texture. Can I continue assembly or does the powder coating have to be
completely removed? If it needs to be removed is there an easy way that
doesn't risk marring the mating surface?

Thanks,

James,

The short end goes into the head. Use some thread anti-seize and a
double nut on the other end to tighten

As far as the powder coating, you may have to sand it off by putting
some emery cloth on a flat surface such as some plate glass and then
using a circle motion, sand until the coating is off. I have used that
method when just refreshing surfaces such as a thermostat housing.

Hi all: A quick note to encourage those of you attending the 6-PACK Tria=
ls in NJ next month to get your hotel reservations made soon. I made mi=
ne yesterday, and they only have King rooms available for Saturday night=
, and rooms with two doubles are available for Thursday and Friday night=
s. For an additional cost, I believe they have upgrades such as a King =

Hey Listers,

I have sold my '76 TR6, and have a bunch of spare parts that are no longer needed.
I took picrtures and posted quick descriptions on my flickr site.

If you are interested in any or all, please let me know offsite.

Thanks,

Happy Motoring

Scott.
