A friend with a TR6 sent me the following question. Anyone out there offer
advice?

Andrew Uprichard

No 6-cylinders at present L

I can't get any grease in the bar assembly that the clutch and brake pedals
are mounted to unless you take the whole thing apart. Can I tap it for a
grease fitting in place without taking the whole thing apart? After about 15
or 20 minutes the clutch pedal really squeaks and becomes harder to actuate.

Could be the bushings in the assembly are shot or possibly the clutch fork
is cracking.

It's highly unlikely that this is a pedal problem. If indeed the pedal were that worn, it'd be loose and sloppy all the time. Because this problem develops only after 20 minutes when things have warmed up, I'd say your buddy has a clutch problem. I've been down this road, before. Twice. The pressure plate is failing and only announces this when it's hot. There's a slim chance the release fork is moving on the shaft as another lister mentioned but this isn't usually a temperature-dependant affliction. If your buddy is convinced that it is the pedal, perhaps a liberal dousing with WD-40 will allow him to confirm his suspicion.

Subject: [6pack] TR-6 Carb question
From: wcwellbaum--- via 6pack <6pack@autox.team.net>
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: 6pack-bounces@autox.team.net

My '75 TR-6 will run well until it warms up and will then drop down to
the rear three cylinders with spitting and popping out the exhaust.

Following is a list of what I've tried to correct my problem:

New:
Dizzy cap, rotor, points, ign. wires, coil, capacitor, plugs.

Relatively new fuel pump, and a new fuel filter. Plenty of fuel being
pumped into both carbs.

Carbs: took them apart and cleaned all parts. Replaced the Grose jets
and diaphragms. Took the bi-metal thingies apart and cleaned them out
and reassembled. Set the float levels. Using 20 weight oil in the
dashpots.
Used compressed air to flush all fuel lines and can hear gurgling in the
gas tank. Float bowels are squeaky clean. Carbs were rebuilt by
Roadster Factory several years ago. All this work have resulted in NO
correction of the problem.

Put new fuel filter on today and it fired right up. Idled smoothly for
about 5-8 minutes and dropped down to the rear 3 pots. Still have spark
to the front cylinders.

Don't have any overheating symptoms and don't smell any anti-freeze or
the smell associated with overheating issues. I've been trying to
correct the problem for about 3 months now and have run out of ideas on
what it could be.

Does NOT seem to be electrical in nature but DOES seem to be heat
related. As is, runs fine till warm. Another Club mate suggested the
bi-metal gizmos may have something to do with my problem. Any ideas?

Clue: If I have spark to the three front cylinders and and I have
gasoline being pumped into the front carb what would cause the three
front cylinders to stop firing when warmed up. Need Help!

Hi Bill,=20

I have more questions than answers, I'm afraid, and after 3 months you've p=
robably asked yourself all of them but here goes:=20

How do you know for certain that 3 cylinders are not firing? This points to=
a pretty weird scenario of 3 spark plugs, 3 spark plug leads or 3 terminal=
s on the distributor cap all failing at once. Unlikely. Misfiring at temper=
ature means that something is losing continuity when it gets hot. This will=
not happen due to the temperature compensators. Yes..the car may behave le=
ss then ideally if these things are out of whack, but I believe the cross-o=
ver on the intake manifold would ensure that the problem, if the compensato=
rs were causing one, would be apparent everywhere..not just on 3 cylinders.=
=20

I'm definitely leaning toward an electrical problem. It's not the coil, the=
condenser or the points because their misbehaviors would not be cylinder-s=
pecific so I think you've got a spark distribution problem.=20

Try swapping some leads between dizzy cap and plugs to see if the misfire m=
igrates when it warms up. If it does=E2=80=A6the lead(s) are the problem. I=
've had lead problems before so I'm leaning in this direction.=20

Ditto with the plugs. Swap them around and see if the problem moves. If it =
does=E2=80=A6plugs are the culprit(s). I'd be less surprised by 3 duds in a=
batch of 6 leads then I would be by 3 duds in a batch of 6 plugs because l=
eads are more easily damaged.=20

OH=E2=80=A6a longshot: Have you had the air filter box off? If so, and if y=
ou mistakenly covered the hole on the carb throat face that doesn't get a b=
olt going through it, by putting the gasket on backwards, this will be your=
problem. If those holes are blocked, the car will run OK only up to about =
2500 rpm. If you typically keep the revs at or below this level while you w=
arm the car up, you could think the problem is temperature related. That sa=
id=E2=80=A6.I'm still thinking you've got a sparking problem, not an aspira=
tion problem.=20

Subject: [6pack] TR-6 Carb question=20

My '75 TR-6 will run well until it warms up and will then drop down to=20
the rear three cylinders with spitting and popping out the exhaust.=20

Following is a list of what I've tried to correct my problem:=20

New:=20
Dizzy cap, rotor, points, ign. wires, coil, capacitor, plugs.=20

Relatively new fuel pump, and a new fuel filter. Plenty of fuel being=20
pumped into both carbs.=20

Carbs: took them apart and cleaned all parts. Replaced the Grose jets=20
and diaphragms. Took the bi-metal thingies apart and cleaned them out=20
and reassembled. Set the float levels. Using 20 weight oil in the=20
dashpots.=20
Used compressed air to flush all fuel lines and can hear gurgling in the=20
gas tank. Float bowels are squeaky clean. Carbs were rebuilt by=20
Roadster Factory several years ago. All this work have resulted in NO=20
correction of the problem.=20

Put new fuel filter on today and it fired right up. Idled smoothly for=20
about 5-8 minutes and dropped down to the rear 3 pots. Still have spark=20
to the front cylinders.=20

Don't have any overheating symptoms and don't smell any anti-freeze or=20
the smell associated with overheating issues. I've been trying to=20
correct the problem for about 3 months now and have run out of ideas on=20
what it could be.=20

Does NOT seem to be electrical in nature but DOES seem to be heat=20
related. As is, runs fine till warm. Another Club mate suggested the=20
bi-metal gizmos may have something to do with my problem. Any ideas?=20

Clue: If I have spark to the three front cylinders and and I have=20
gasoline being pumped into the front carb what would cause the three=20
front cylinders to stop firing when warmed up. Need Help!=20

From: James_ via 6pack <6pack@autox.team.net>

I see a NOS rear bumper on eBay but gosh it is expensive. My bumper rusted out a bit and not sure if I or a professional shop can weld a repair metal and re chrome or not. Anyone have experience?
I am in need of a bumper. Years ago a fellow in Fresericksburg VA I believe had a rear bumper but we never got to connect. Stefan was his name in case he is still on here.
Anyway.
I know some suggest the SS Harrington bumpers, but thinking chrome looks better.
Anyone had theirs repaired?
Or....
Anyone have a solid one I can use for rechroming? I plan to leave off the overriders but I still need one that was designed for overriders because of the position change from early to late bumpers. They had to be raised to meet US restrictions. So that means the mounting studs will be in a different location on earlier style bumpers.

Cheers,

James

HI from here also. Used to have a '72 Damson TR6 and still enjoy the
letters with trials and tribulations. I occasionally would add my 2 pence
worth of advice.

I was just resting, any reports or my demise are seriously premature. I =
almost posted about my damn horn that kept going off at the slightest =
tug of the wheel, but got it figured out before I cried for help. I =
thought I had fixed the problem recently by pushing the column back =
relative to the shaft, but it came up again a couple weeks ago at the =
autocross. On inspection I discovered the column had shifted back up, I =
tightened the nuts securing the column under the dash "but good" and =
for all you torque wrench junkies I have no idea how many foot pounds =
that is, but hopefully it is not slipping again for a good long time.
