We had to pull the engine out and do a rebuild (ouch!!!)

Left the tran in because, well, seemed like a good place to store it! the =
car is sitting on an EZLift with a 2x4 across holding up the tran

Engine is coming back this week, and I'm thinking if I move the tran back a=
few inches (disconnect the driveshaft and tran mount), then we can slide =
the tran back into the engine.

The engine is really easy to remove w/o the tran and I'm thinking it should=
just drop right back in. we've done the tran R&R so many times we should =
be able to slide it back into the engine. I just don't want to go through =
the hassle of pulling the tran and then trying to install them together, tr=
ying to get the tran under the scuttle then back into the car. Seems like =
way too much work when I think this will work.

Does this make sense or am I missing something? The seats, dash support, a=
nd tunnel cover are still out. carbs and exhaust manifold will be installe=
d after engine is in place.

I'm thinking I should add the fan after the engine is in. it's brand new; =

Hi Frank,
When I rebuilt my TR6 engine I did the same thing right down to =
the EZ lift. It is very difficult, in my experience, to get the car =
high enough to get the angle needed to remove/replace the engine with =
the trans attached. It is much easier in a home garage to reattach the =
transmission to the engine after the engine is installed. I reinstalled =
the manifolds, carbs and fan after the engine was back in the car.

You're making to much of the reinstall. Leave the transmission installed
and attached at the rear mount and driveshaft.
As long as you install the flywheel, clutch disc and pressure plate with a
pilot to line up the disc you are in good shape.
You can maneuver the engine around as long as you have a chain fall or
engine lift to slide the engine into the transmission.
I have done many of these and its alot easier than pulling the whole
assembly including the transmission.
It's especially hard if your transmission has a laycock overdrive which
adds weight.

Glenn 71 TR6 sold, 74 TR6 restored, 68 TR250 ongoing frame off restoration.
Spitfires all sold,
73 BMW E10 2002 restored

We had to pull the engine out and do a rebuild (ouch!!!)
Left the tran in because, well, seemed like a good place to store it!=C2=A0=
the car is sitting on an EZLift with a 2x4 across holding up=C2=A0 the tra=
Engine is coming back this week, and I'm thinking if I move the tran ba=
ck a few inches (disconnect the driveshaft and tran mount),=C2=A0 then we c=
The engine is really easy to remove w/o the tran and I'm thinking it sh=
ould just drop right back in.=C2=A0 we've done the tran R&R so many=
times we should be able to slide it back into the engine.=C2=A0 I just don=
't want to go through the hassle of pulling the tran and then trying to=
install them together, trying to get the tran under the scuttle then back =
into the car.=C2=A0 Seems like way too much work when I think this will wor=
k.

Does this make sense or am I missing something?=C2=A0 The seats, dash suppo=
rt, and tunnel cover are still out.=C2=A0 carbs and exhaust manifold will b=
e installed after engine is in place.
Hi Frank,
=C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0 When I rebuilt my TR6 engine I did the same thi=
ng right down to the EZ lift.=C2=A0 It is very difficult, in my experience,=
to get the car high enough to get the angle=C2=A0 needed to remove/replace=
the engine with the trans attached. It is much easier in a home garage to =
reattach the transmission to the engine after the engine is installed. I re=
installed the manifolds, carbs and fan after the engine was back in the car=

That can work. The transmissions will interfere with the pressure plate
unless the trans is like 4 inches back (maybe less), but if you get the
engine lined up with the trans it can go in with less clearance.

Install manifolds, and fan after engine is in. Dizzy can be in place
but it's safer to have it out and the hole plugged with a rag or something.

My experience is with a TR4 not a 6, but should be applicable.

Regards, Tony

"While you are there"

I'd replace/upgrade the throttle cross rod bushings if you haven't already.=
its a 10 minute job with the motor out, it is a truly miserable job with =
the motor in.

Triple check that freeze plugs are in place.

Save yourself a future headache and install the top starter bolt from the r=
ear side.

Pop 3 small welds equally spaced around the ring gear/flywheel to prevent t=
he starter from kicking the ring gear off - seems to happen with some regul=
arity on rebuilt motors.

Replace your TO bearing and upgrade the TO bearing lever arm/cross rod bolt=
. they are weak and shear off regularly.

Chase all the threads on the manifold studs, same with the nuts if not new.

Take 20 minutes with a dremel and open up the intake manifold openings to m=
ore closely match the openings in the cylinder head using the gasket as a t=
emplate - they are pretty poorly matched from the factory. This is an easy=
job because the intake is aluminum.

That can work. The transmissions will interfere with the pressure plate un=
less the trans is like 4 inches back (maybe less), but if you get the engin=
e lined up with the trans it can go in with less clearance.

Install manifolds, and fan after engine is in. Dizzy can be in place but i=
t's safer to have it out and the hole plugged with a rag or something.

My experience is with a TR4 not a 6, but should be applicable.

Regards, Tony

Does this make sense or am I missing something?

I=92m thinking we will install the carbs and exhaust manifold after engine =

I=92m bringing you the alternator, coil, dizzy, engine mounts, fan belt, ??

I=92m thinking I should add the fan after the engine is in. it=92s brand n=

We had to pull the engine out and do a rebuild (ouch!!!)

Left the tran in because, well, seemed like a good place to store it! the c=

Engine is coming back this week, and I=E2=80=99m thinking if I move the tran=
back a few inches (disconnect the driveshaft and tran mount), then we can s=
lide the tran back into the engine.
=20
The engine is really easy to remove w/o the tran and I=E2=80=99m thinking it=
should just drop right back in. we=E2=80=99ve done the tran R&R so many ti=
mes we should be able to slide it back into the engine. I just don=E2=80=99=
t want to go through the hassle of pulling the tran and then trying to insta=
ll them together, trying to get the tran under the scuttle then back into th=
e car. Seems like way too much work when I think this will work.
=20
Does this make sense or am I missing something? The seats, dash support, an=
d tunnel cover are still out. carbs and exhaust manifold will be installed a=
fter engine is in place.
