Subject: [Alpines] Series 5 Alpine body
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: alpines-bounces@autox.team.net

I have been considering a new body for the Sunbeam. Salt Flats time
trials car, a glass one made from a S5 body that is near perfect. The
body I have is warped bent and other wise near useless. What could I
expect to pay for a body only in good shape, if such a thing exists.
Are fiber glass bodies available anywhere? That might be cheaper.

Hmm, more requests... is there some among you who can do computer
sketches (like using google sketchup)? Looking for one who can make a
130 inch wheel base car with a swoopy new front nose on it per my
specs? Body aft of the windshield would be pure alpine or tiger. Front
would resemble an upside down ski boat prow...sorta... anybody do that?
With and without a Harrington top...

Larry

Russ Maddock, of "Sunbeam Supreme", might know, if he is still around. I
always found him to be a a gold standard on history.

In my S4 under bonnet engine is black as are steering parts (steering gear
and linkage etc.). I am not sure if steering parts should be black or
carnival red as all other steel parts in the engine bay?

OK, but this engine is blue, I have heard that whole engines sold as spare
parts were blue. At least this 1725 was blue when I got it (from under a
tree - it was singing a moody blues).

Moi,

just the body panels are red, most of all other parts are unpainted or
black.

My engine was blue as well. The serial numbers match so I'm pretty sure it is
original. I had Tower paint match the color when I rebuilt it a couple of
years ago.

To all list members,
I am looking for an engine rebuilder on the east coast, as close to New York
as possible, for my 1725 that is now in various pieces. It now consists of a
clean block that needs to be bored out to .600, a 1725 cracked block that
contains the crank and connecting and push rods, cylinder head and all new
.6 over pistons and gaskets from Rick. Looking for a reliable builder who
knows his way around these engines Any help getting this put together will
be greatly appreciated.

Any good engine machine shop that has been in business for a long time can
handle your rebuild. These engines are like a Briggs & Stratton to these
guys. Give them the shop manual for the technical data and they can take it
from there. They can take it past factory for you by weighing pistons and
rods to very close tolerances, or just run of the mill work. It's up to you.

But the question is: Where did you get those .60 pistons? For me it seems
that nowadays biggest overbore available is .30?? I have a set of .60
pistons (without rings) in my garage, but I haven't seen for sale anymore.

I would disagree about having a standard machine shop "rebuild" an Alpine
engine.

I would bet few ever see old engines these days.

Old cars are WAY less than 1% of the cars out there.

And fewer yet see Alpine engines.

Now here is the main part, All Alpine engines are in excess of 35 years
old.

Most have issues with cooling system corrosion.

And other issues.

MOST machine shops MAY do a descent job of what THEY do and that is the
"machine work"

An Alpine engine is NOT a Briggs and Stratton.

Anyone who treats it as such will likely send their Alpine down the path
of the majority of those that are gone.

Good luck.

You are right, Briggs and Stratton was a bad term. These are simple "Tractor
Engines" and
way less technical than larger block or new technology. ANy good machine shop
can handle it.
