I haven't installed glasspacks in my Bricklin but I did install 2 24"
glasspacks in my '71 Mustang (Sport Roof) with a similar engine: V8 302.
It did make a satisfying 'Growl' but it was ANYTHING but quiet! I had to turn
off the engine to order at a drive-thru and had to remove them when I was
given my 3rd ticket for noise.
Things may have changed quite a bit since then but from my experience,
glasspacks are not quite.

This was my solution...

I installed "electronic cutouts" that I could control with a remote key fob.
Quiet factory exhaust (and radio) when I wanted and then at the press of a

Subject: [Bricklin] Brake question - Rear drums brakes
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: bricklin-bounces@autox.team.net

Hi friends,

my annual check of my SV-1 shows up, that the rear drums are not working
equally.

I have tried to get the drum off the axle (passenger side), but nothing
happens:

I have disassembled the 3 little bolts and checked if the emergency brake is
OFF

The drum rotates almost free (just < it is slightly stiff).

I used a hammer to loosen the rust connection between drum and axle hub.
Nothing..

So, my suggest was that the shoes are still too tight to the drum. Than I
have tried to loosen the adjusting screw thru the maintenance holes, but I
cant see in which direction is the right.

Both directions were very stiff to move. Again nothing..

Any hints how I can get the drum off? In which direction I have to push the
adjusting screw to loosen the shoes?

Thanks in advance and

Greetings from Germany

Subject: [Bricklin] How to fasten the front wheel bearing
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: bricklin-bounces@autox.team.net

Hi again,

unfortunately I have had to disassemble the front wheel brake disc to tight
the 4 screws of the mounting plate for the front wheel.

Getting everything together was not a big challenge, but now my question is
how to tight/ adjust the wheel bearing.

I wont screw it too tight.

I would be pleased if someone can help me out..

Cheers and thanks in advance.

You are doing the right things. I don't recall which direction the star wheel needs to turn, but it is usually pretty obvious because in one direction the adjuster lever resists or stops turning of the star wheel.

Here is a video with another technique to try https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Po-WXqIKjHQ You can also buy or rent a drum puller tool.

The short answer is that you make it snug then back it off just slightly. A

Sven,

Chances are that your drum has warn a little. The shoes usually
don't fit across the entire drum surface and consiquently wear like a
"L" laying down with the short foot of the L towards the outside. So
you'll have to retrace the shoes a lot.

As to which direction, that is always a problem. Adjust in one
direction. If the drum gets very tight and won't turn, then you've
expanded the shoes as though you'd put on the brakes. So go in the
other direction a long ways. As you go you can try and wiggle the
drum. If it doesn't wiggle at all, the it can be rusted to the
hub. As Scott sent the video link, try gently tapping the drum with
a hammer or using a screw to try and jack it off the hub. Keep in
mind, it may not come if the
shoes aren't retracted enough.

I have tried to get both of my e-mail addresses registered with you for
years. Every time I send an e-mail and it's from one account versus
another that I use, you hold it up. I am so fed up with you. Take a
look at my e-mail from yesterday. I am a very long-time dues paying and
support of BI. Why do you treat me like this????????????

The other e-mail is from amo-cpa@comcast.net. See if you can get this
fixed!

By the way, I have never given your organization a dime BECAUSE OF THIS!

Sven,

Quoting from the Chilton's AMC manual,

"Place the hub assembly onto the spindle and install the inner
lockring and outer bearing. Install the wheel bearing nut and torque
it to 50 Ft Lb, while turning the wheel back and forth to seat the
bearings. Back off the nut about 1/4 turn (90deg) max."

The Bricklin manual has something different. It says to install the bearings,
tighten to 20-25 ft-lbs while turning the hub to seat the bearings. Then back
off about 1/3 of a turn and tighten the bolt to 2-10 inch lbs. (inch!). So
that works too.

Sven,

I had to replace my front wheel bearings last year, and unfortunately, the passenger side failed after 600 km. I think the wheel nut was probably tightened a bit too much: the nuts were backed off about a 1/4 turn (according to AMC documentation). I inquired about that on the mailing list right here, and according to the feedback I got (thank you again guys ;), it is supposed to be tightened until the hub binds while turning, then backed off about a half turn, rather than a 1/4 turn. Granted, it may depends too on how tight the nut is originally tightened...
Eventually, when I replaced the bearings again, the nuts were tightened until they binded (turn your disc/rotor from times to times to eliminate the slack), but then with a half turn, the nut really felt loose, so it was rather backed off about a third turn. I put more than a thousand kilometers on the odometer, drove the car in the tight curves of a mountainous area and both sides have been fine.

Betreff: Re: [Bricklin] How to fasten the front wheel bearing

Sven,

I had to replace my front wheel bearings last year, and unfortunately, the
passenger side failed after 600 km. I think the wheel nut was probably
tightened a bit too much: the nuts were backed off about a 1/4 turn (according
to AMC documentation). I inquired about that on the mailing list right here,
and according to the feedback I got (thank you again guys ;), it is supposed
to be tightened until the hub binds while turning, then backed off about a
half turn, rather than a 1/4 turn. Granted, it may depends too on how tight
the nut is originally tightened...
Eventually, when I replaced the bearings again, the nuts were tightened until
they binded (turn your disc/rotor from times to times to eliminate the slack),
but then with a half turn, the nut really felt loose, so it was rather backed
off about a third turn. I put more than a thousand kilometers on the odometer,
drove the car in the tight curves of a mountainous area and both sides have
been fine.

Subject: Re: [Bricklin] Brake question - Rear drums brakes
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: bricklin-bounces@autox.team.net

Hi;

I had a similar problem with mine last summer.

First make _sure_ the _three_ little screws are out - in the front side
of the drum, as you look at it. You mentioned you did.

My wheel cylinder leaked all over the shoe and ate into and expanded the
lining. So it was crumbling and rolling up on itself to resist the drum
from sliding past it. I finally determined that even if I ruined the
drum, I had to get it off of there. I held a crowbar behind the back
edge of the drum, prying and putting pressure on it to slide it out, and
took a four pound hammer and just kept hitting it - very hard - in the
front and out towards the corner edge. I pried the crowbar at different
places too. Then all of a sudden it started to move. Success!

Hope yours would do the same.

Good luck on your 41 year old - it's a '75 - by the S/N. (Mine is too.)
