Unfortunately neither Pete nor I had our cars there. We're both still in the
process of putting them back together. Hand-cranking several of our 320
trucks was a big hit, BTW.

Aloha,

My name is Ken Savage and Im a long time lurker here. I have a 69 2000
that I need to get rid of. Has not run in at least 12+ years. Car is
complete, but will need lots of work. Vin is 11386 and engine is 11995.
I have not seen it in 7+ years, it is near San Diego and Im in Hawaii.
It needs to go so the best offer by the end of August at the latest will
get it I guess. If you are interested you can reach me off the list at
ksavagemolokai@gmail.com. If anyone in the San Diego area who does not
want it, but could look at it and report back to the list or interested
buyers that would be helpful.

Thanks,
Ken

Regarding rope seals, Tow Mater said it best:

"if there ain't no oil under 'em, there ain't no oil in 'em."

After 40 years of roadster ownership and several rope seal replacements, I
accept this as a truism.

so last night I bring the early 67 1600 roadster back from storage (its about
4 miles). the revs slow down and it dies at a light. it almost doesnbt
start.

I get it home, and we get ready to leave in it but it wonbt start. I think
maybe its out of gas and the gauge isnbt working. I top it off with 4
gallons of premium, and it overflows. obviously that wasnbt it. I can
hear the electric fuel pump running so thatbs not it. (I have replaced the
mechanical pump with an electric one)

we take another car.

maybe two hours later we come home, and it starts. runs fine all the way back
to storage. car doesnbt get run that much, and the gas in it could easily
have been months old. you think bad gas? stuff in the gas tank/line? any
other ideas?

Ethanol is the enemy. It's a moisture magnet. I don't like corn in my gas
but there's not much choice around here.

Lift the lids on the side bowls on both the Hitachi SUs, remove the floats,
and check for water droplets embedded in the gasoline at the bottom of the
bowl. Or dirt particles that made it past your filter. Oh, check the glass
bowl of the filter for water at the bottom too.

Shake the floats too. Shouldn't have any liquid inside.

I have been driving my 70, 1600 a lot lately. Took it up to Sonora pass from
Fremont, driving it to work everyday. Yesterday went to a grad party with a
load of stuff for the celebration, all was well until I went back out to move
the car out of the driveway and it was DEAD. Only thing I could hear when I
turned the key was a slight click.
Push started it and got it home and this morning went to start exploring to
find the problem.
Battery is full of liquid and shows 12-13 volts on the multimeter but the
headlights and tail lights are dead. Put a battery charger on it and all was
well but then went DEAD again.
Turned out to be the homemade battery cable on the common side. Cleaned it
and re-assembled and am back on the road.

so last night I bring the early 67
1600 roadster back from storage (its about
4 miles). the revs slow down and it dies at a
 light. it almost doesnbt
 start.

I get it home, and we get ready to leave in it but it wonbt
 start. I think
maybe its out of gas and the gauge isnbt working. I
 top it off with 4
gallons of premium, and it overflows. obviously that
 wasnbt it. I can
hear the electric fuel pump running so thatbs not it. (I
 have replaced the
mechanical pump with an electric one)

 we take another car.

maybe two hours later we come home, and it starts.
runs fine all the way back
to storage. car doesnbt get run that much, and the gas
 in it could easily
have been months old. you think bad gas? stuff
 in the gas tank/line? any
 other ideas?

Yah, I had the same symptoms and found the problem at the bottom of the
negative terminal cable - dirty where it screws into the frame!

Process of elimination and patients. When you drive a car that is 44 years
old you just take a deep breath and think about it.
Just glad this didn't happen up in the Sierra. I might not have been so calm
about it.
I always say there is not much you can't fix on these things as long as you
have a crescent wrench and a hammer. Turns out I only needed the crescent
wrench this time.

Looks like my right rear cylinder is leaking. A quick confirmation,
please: are the nuts on the brake lines for a '69 2000 10mm?

Also, what are my options here and which is(are) preferred? New cylinder?
Rebuild kit? Alternative cylinder?

Thanks everyone...

Dave,

Although Graeme's advice is always well thought-out, and you can't go
wrong with new cylinders, if you have the additional time, I'd take the
leaking cylinder apart, and check the bore. If it is smooth (not pitted) and
the piston is not corroded, I'd use a repair kit, and I have done so
successfully.

As to the size of the nuts, do yourself a favor and buy a set
of metric flare nut wrenches: 9 x 11 and 10 x 12, or the equivalent. They
grip the nuts on nearly all sides, don't slip, and one of those sizes will fit
the nuts. My guess is 10mm. (I have both metric and SAE flare nut wrenches
in my box.)

Gary

Looks like
my right rear cylinder is leaking. A quick confirmation,
please: are the
nuts on the brake lines for a '69 2000 10mm?

Also, what are my options here
and which is(are) preferred? New cylinder?
Rebuild kit? Alternative
cylinder?

Thanks everyone...

Dave,

The hex dimension on the tube fitting for the rear brake cylinder is
7/16" . While 11mm is close to 7/16" you would waste your money if
you purchased metric tubing wrenches to work on a Datsun roadster
since all of the brake tubing fittings are SAE.

Thanks fellas, good advice. I'll grab a cylinder from Ross once I confirm
that's the problem, see below.

That's interesting about the metric/SAE wrench issue. I thought they were
SAE - I have a 3/8 + 7/16 combo line wrench which I bought to work on the
Roadster... I've used it on the clutch slave, certainly. Somehow, it
really didn't seem to fit, so I grabbed a 10mm/11mm.

11mm = 0.4331"
7/16 = 0.4375"

Not sure how I'd fail to get the slightly larger 7/16" on there... maybe
it's because I was lying upside down on the driveway with my head under a
car at 8:30 at night?

Meanwhile, having popped the drum off, everything inside looks good. Shoes
are ~new, which is nice, and there's no brake fluid in there. The cylinder
doesn't really seem to be losing fluid - not from that side, anyway. I've
flushed and bled that corner and topped-up the M/C and haven't lost any
fluid since. Mysterious?

Dave,

I keep a reasonably complete set of both metric and SAE wrenches in my
box. I have encountered a number of situations working on roadsters, almost
exclusively low-windshield cars, where the wrench which is supposed to fit
won't, but it's metric companion or vice-versa, will. Also, had to carefully
file down the flats on a couple of brake line fittings, and use metric when
the SAE fittings were corroded. Never regretted having spent the money on
both.

Gary

Thanks fellas,
good advice. I'll grab a cylinder from Ross once I confirm that's the
problem, see below.

That's interesting about the metric/SAE wrench issue. I
thought they were SAE - I have a 3/8 + 7/16 combo line wrench which I bought
to work on the Roadster... I've used it on the clutch slave, certainly.
Somehow, it really didn't seem to fit, so I grabbed a 10mm/11mm.

11mm =
0.4331"
7/16 = 0.4375"

Not sure how I'd fail to get the slightly larger
7/16" on there... maybe it's because I was lying upside down on the driveway
with my head under a car at 8:30 at night?

Meanwhile, having popped the drum
off, everything inside looks good. Shoes are ~new, which is nice, and there's
no brake fluid in there. The cylinder doesn't really seem to be losing fluid
- not from that side, anyway. I've flushed and bled that corner and topped-up
the M/C and haven't lost any fluid since. Mysterious?

11mm is close to 7/16" you would waste your money if you purchased metric
tubing wrenches to work on a Datsun roadster since all of the brake tubing
fittings are SAE.

Hello, All.

I was putting my car back together after a paint job, cleaning the antenna
before reinstalling it, and the cable just fell off. I can see that it was
soldered at that point, but repairing it looked beyond my capabilities.
And I just had the radio restored, too!

Does anybody have an antenna they're willing to sell?

Love the story as much as the photo.

Especially the part about giving the old people heart attacks.

And, can one actually study so that they can score low on the exhibitionist
scale? I presume it's like golf where lower score = better.

And who gets to grade the test? Pure research, that.

Young woman driving. Wonder if she remembers...

Is that a 510 next to the...um, roadster?

I remember streaking ....we usually did it at night...one night the cops

Subject: [Roadsters] Mechanical Fuel Pump
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: datsun-roadsters-bounces@autox.team.net
Status: RO

Where can I get a mechanical fuel pump for a 1969 1600 roadster (or a rebuild
kit)? I tried Dealer=NA; O'Rielly, Auto Zone, Pep Boys = no listing.
RockAuto
had a listing ( BWD/NIEHOLL #41453, ordered one and it was not even close. (
It looks like the one for a Nissan 510 AIRTEX # 1069.) It will be going back.
Thanks,
Mike

In keeping with all things Japanese, ( I kid). I found that a fuel pump from a Toyota taco pick up worked .
The only thing that I had the change was the top half of the fuel pump housing where the inlet and outlet spook out .

If I remember correctly, the spl311's I'm
Melt and outlet are 180 degrees to each other , but the Toyota was at some weird 53 degrees to each other.

I just switched the housings by unscrewing the 6 or 8 screws that held the housings together, The actuator lever that sticks into the side of the motor and rubs against the crank shaft ( I think) was the same length and angle - a perfect match. :- ).

That problem cured - I now have to send my carbs off to ztherapy for them to rebuild. $$. Say bucks "

Good luck.

RockAuto
had a listing ( BWD/NIEHOLL #41453, ordered one and it was not even close. (
It looks like the one for a Nissan 510 AIRTEX # 1069.) It will be going back.

Interesting, I'm having issue with my fuel pump at the moment.
What year
Toyota Tacoma are we talking for a mechanical fuel pump? Did you have to use
a spacer block?
Thanks,
Roy H.
