Subject: [Mg-t] TF Body Removal
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: mg-t-bounces@autox.team.net

I should know the answer to this but I don't.
Some years ago a member of Fox Cities British Car Club told me he took the
body off his MG TF over the winter. It was a nice car but he wanted to
freshen the running gear. He told me it was esy to do and said he only had
to take out 16 bolts to remove the body.
Was he making it easier than it sounds?
The reason I ask is that I am writing a series of articles about fixing up
my three T Series cars. The TF was supposed to ge a "rolling restoration"
like people did years ago. But in the fall of 2011 I discovered that the
rear body support was cracked (the same as the one shown in the photos you
sent) and also the board in front of the gas tank is rotted so soft you can
push your fingers into it.
If I can I am looking for the fastest, easiest way to fix these without
taking the car totally apart.
I have removed two TD bodies and thought it was somewhat difficult. I
don't think that doing a TF is any easier. What's your opiion?

Well, it's technically "easy" but it takes a lot of time and effort. You
won't do it in a weekend!

There are a lot of other panels etc to get off before you even get to the 16
bolts.

As for the 16 bolts, they may be the ones that hold the body to the chassis,
but he seems to have forgotten to mention the other couple hundred, the
wiring, engine controls, fuel lines and a lot more.

That's probably right for removing the bare tub. But, as Clive said, it
takes a lot of work to get down to the bare tub.

The seemingly strongest way I have seen them attached is with eye bolts
passed through the floor plywood, then through the links of a chain looked
around the chassis tube. A weaker way is for the belt bolt to pass through the
plywood, then through thick washers hooked behind the floorboard supports.
Opinions vary about crash benefits of belts in TDs. Some suggest that a
passenger would be kept in the car, there to be lobotomised by glove box knob
or wiper motor.
Horst Schach's three point belt design in his book would seem to answer that
worry, though it looks like hard work.
Something to consider when placing the belts is some way to keep the belt
metal from chipping paint on the running board when passenger gets out of the
car. Some passengers can get two paint chips with every opening. I am
repainting my car this winter, and am thinking about some sort of shock cord
retractor that will keep the metal clip from flipping out the door, perhaps
with the cord tied to the belt material at the clip, then lead to a pulley in
the outboard rear corner of the seat and secured near the tunnel.

We have both Griling and Armstrong shocks that Worlwide has rebuilt and are
wanting to put one pair on the 1950 MG TD "hot rod" we are doing. The car
will have a Ford V8-60 flathead engine.
Question 1 - Is either design better for this application? The Armstrongs
"look" better as the filer caps match the back shocks. But that doesn't
mean they work better.
Question 2 - It seems that Moss no longer stocks the bolts to hold the
Armstrong shocks to the frame and we have lost track of our bolts. In a
quick test it almost seems like either 10 mm fine bolts or 3/8-in. fine
bolts will thread far enough into the holes, but the test bolts are old and
cruddy and we can't be sure.
Does either of these sizes work or do we have to find a source of Whitworth
fasteners?
If we used the 10 mm or 3/8-in. fine should we re-tap the holes to whatever
size?
Thanks for any help.

The bolts are 3/8"-20 BSF.
The ones for the Armstrongs are shorter than those used for Girlings,
as Girlings had a thicked mounting base. You will need one longer one,
for the engine steady bracket. There is a round spacer, that goes on top
of the shock base for the Armstrongs, between the damper and the bracket.

Actually, either design is OK. Girlings have a cast iron body, and do not
wear.
Armstrongs, with either pot metal or aluminum bodies, tend to wear a little.
That only matters when you rebuild them.

Moss Motors sells 3/8" BSF bolts. I believe that they were 1 1/4" long for
Armstrong,
with the exception of the one with the bracket. That I believe was 1 3/4"
long.

Weren't the wing stampings changed to accommodate the Armstrong shocks? I seem
to recall that the Armstrong shocks won't clear the early wings. But my
memory's failed me before.

B

And, by the way, retapping the mounting holes to US or metric threads would

That I believe was 1 3/4"
long.

Stick with the original thread. British size hardware is available. You
can't just run to Home Depot and pick up some. Try British Fasteners
(www.*britishfasteners*.com/.) They have a good selection at reasonable
prices. BTW, if it is a fine thread it isn't Whitworth. Whitworth is a
coarse thread. The fine threads are British Standard Fine (BSF). The
British Fasteners website also has has good charts and information on
the different threads including the BA threads you will find in the
electrical equipment.

The hole positions are the same for the front shocks, Girling or Armstrong.
The rear hole positions are different.
The later front wings have a hump in them, to accommodate the taller Armstrong
shocks.

Yes, retapping the threaded holes to US or metric will weaken the threads.

Yes, wings were altered to fit the Armstrongs. I have seen Girling wings on
cars with Armstrongs, but it has been a tight fit at best, and there may have
been spacers involved.

Weren't the wing stampings changed to accommodate the Armstrong shocks? I
seem
to recall that the Armstrong shocks won't clear the early wings. But my

That I believe was 1 3/4"
long.

I love coming across these old videos. The first of this series I had not
seen before. Perhaps new to you as well. A silent movie couple pick-up
their brand new N-type Magna at the works.
Enjoy!

Folks, I have 12 positive ground units left and 3 negative ground units
left...they are selling very slowly and after these are gone, I doubt I will
make more. If anyone wants to take over this enterprise, we can talk.
