Hello Mike,
Use a'88 volvo cam seal.
gates pn ks 13945.national # 1172, fel pro tcs45725. it fits better
than a moss seal, & has a double lip seal, not a single lip seal. No
machine work required

You have to remove the oil pan and front timing cover.
Chances are, the lip seal cut a groove into the cast iron front crank pulley.
You might want to place a Speedi-Sleeve onto the pulley shaft, for the rope
seal to seal against. CR99146. 1.411-1.417 diameters.

Good morning Friends,

Today I made an embarrassing discovery! While stripping the paint
from my TD's starter, I discovered...GREEN Triumph engine paint! I'm
not going to tell the old boy what I found for fear of a 'breakdown'.
Never a dull moment with these fun old cars.

Of course, I'm teasing. The XPAG engine and the TR3's engine, use the
same Lucas starter, just as many cars share other Lucas, Bendix,
Smiths, etc., parts. My little TD has a Lucas starter that once lived
on a Triumph.

To complete the story, the starter is now rebuilt and painted black.
Its pretty and runs great. No pix to share. Sorry.

Hello Friends,

Please forgive the commercial nature of this post. I'm not writing to
advertise a car so much as trying to help a friend who badly needs to
liquidate his car. The car is a Triumph TR3. Yea, I know this is the
M.G., list but this is a great car for someone - and at a
bottom-dollar price. (Check Hagerty to see the value of a nicely
restored car!) Sadly (or not) I already have NINE cars. Here are a
few pictures;

http://www.aubard.us/Pete/

...and his listing,

Thanks guys and again, sorry for 'marketing'. Peter's a really good
guy. He just needs a little help right now.

Hi Friends,

My '53 TD's M35G starter rebuild is almost complete. B Everything is clean and lubricated, where appropriate. B Bushes are just fine, oil soaked and their journals are smooth.

What I did discover is that the brass terminal post is not soldered to the field windings! B The two flat conductors from the field, were just pinched into the slot in the inner end of the post. B They were quite grimey at the contact point, so they've been like this for quite a while.

Reviewing the workshop manual today, I see that the flat conductors should be (apparently) soldered to the post. B Can you verify that is correct? B Considering the current drawn, I can't imagine that a simple press-fit connection is valid - but I could be wrong. B Your thoughts?

Chances are, you have aluminum replacement coils in your starter.
Originally, the brushes were crimped to the aluminum, as you cannot solder
them. Might have been spot welded. When brushes need to be replaced,
and the field coil is made of aluminum, best to replace the field coils with
those made of copper.

Subject: [Mg-t] HOT!
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: mg-t-bounces@autox.team.net

Hello Friends,

Man is it ever hot here in south Texas! You'd think it was August in
the south! Wait...

I got up early this morning and swept a clean spot in the garage. I
then rolled the TD chassis over into that spot while I swept out the
work area. I followed that with the putty knife scraping each of
those little globs of greasy dirt from the concrete, followed by
sweeping again. Needless to say, even at 8am, it was already 3.28125
x 10^23 degrees F with 347% humidity! I spent the next 10 minutes
sitting on the roll around stool, in front of the garage fan!

With that area clean, I pushed the chassis back into the work bay and
washed the floor of Nancy's bay. Its drying now, adding another
percent or two to the already impossible humidity. Here's how the
garage looks now.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/20130810_095905e.jpg

No, I don't like cleaning up any more than the next guy, but when the
grunge gets so bad that I risk tracking the crud indoors, its time to
act. If I spooged the new carpet, there'd be hell to pay!

Happy Saturday,

-rick
PS: While I winge on about the summer heat and humidity in south
Texas, I remain reminded that winters here are genius. One can drive
with the top down all winter long, thereby creating balance in the
universe.

Errors-To: mg-t-bounces@autox.team.net

Good day all,
I am in the process of replacing the wood in a TC. Mainly the side curtain box
and one of the side rails. I was going to have someone do it for me but that
person is really jammed up at this time.
I got most of the wood needed from Craig Seabrook and have the blow ups out of
the Moss catalogue. I went as far as to pick up a dilapidated tub to use as a
show and tell for where and how the pieces go together. However, the tub I
got is somewhat different from the one I have and only tells me part of the
story. Would anyone out in MG land have pictures of the wood being assembled
and how they are held in place-that would be the Rest of the Story.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Gerry

Hi Friends,

I haven't written much lately but I have been in the garage. Included
below are pictures of my TD's engine and gearbox, primered and ready for
red paint.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/20130815_123024.jpg

Today is really humid, thanks to off and on rain showers. That's no real
issue when painting primer. However, the humidity will cause milky finish
problems with gloss paint. Therefore, I am waiting to paint the assembly
tomorrow when fine weather is forecast. Pictures to follow.

Hey Friends,

Weather cleared and the relative humidity went down. Therefore, I could
paint. Without a bunch of words to muddle thing up, here are some
pictures, as the TD's engine room looks today.

The engine is secured at the rear but is resting on a floor jack in the
front, under the sump, while the front bracket is refinished and the motor
mount is being replaced.

Subject: [Mg-t] Gearbox 'remote control'
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: mg-t-bounces@autox.team.net

Hello Friends,

I have never rebuilt a gearbox, nor have I ever even opened one. I have flushed them with clean oil and refilled them, but cracking them open is scary.

Today I realize that I should remove, clean, lubricate and reinstall the TD's gearbox 'remote control'. I have read the workshop manual, and have studied the manual's exploded diagrams, and I thought I understood the removal procedure. Hummm.

My TD is a very late '53 model and the manual says to simply remove the four bolts securing the remote control to the gearbox and lift the assembly away, then cover the open wound in the gearbox with a cardboard cover. Simple, eh? And being a late car, there is no risk of pesky ball falling down into the gearbox entrails. B

So with the gearbox in neutral, I followed the manual's procedure. However, the remote control's business end appears to be attached within the gearbox! What's up with that? Is it that the ball-end of the selector is stuck in a receptor requiring a little 'pull' to free it, or is there a paragraph missing from the manual, or am I just doing something wrong? Expiring minds want to know.B

All advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

The 3rd-4th shift rod is longer, than earlier models.
Shift the transmission into 4th. That moves the rod forward, and places the
shift pin at the rear of its travel.

Subject: [Mg-t] Wind Wings, waste of money?
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: mg-t-bounces@autox.team.net

I bought a set of Wind Wings for my TD. I have to say I'm not impressed. I
still had to stick an ear plug in my left ear to protect my eardrum. Are these
things a complete waste of money? I set the wings for a 45 degree angle, like
the instructions said.

I'd have to agree. I made a pair years ago for our Morgan and they were a
waste of time. I also tried them on Penny's TC, my PA and still no use.
Never gave up though. The only car they've been effective on is our
wonderful Talbot!
Mind you, the windscreen is very narrow.

They reduce turbs a little, but not much. They limit the water pouring around the windshield, though!

I bought a set of Wind Wings for my TD. I have to say I'm not impressed. I
still had to stick an ear plug in my left ear to protect my eardrum. Are these
things a complete waste of money? I set the wings for a 45 degree angle, like
the instructions said.

I ordered a new set (from Moss), not so much to deflect wind but rather, to cover holes and scratches where the old wings came off.

Me too. I have a pair of OEM (I think) wind wings for my TF. It's still
windy in the cockpit, but the wind doesn't blow the contact lens out of my
left eye. It's a much more pleasant drive.
If you're looking to substantially pare down the wind, you might investigate
the use of wind wings with one of those wind blockers behind the seats. I
haven't been in a car with that setup, but I understand it makes a big
difference.
The other, more traditional but less fun alternative is to drive with side
curtains up and top down. It's really quite nice inside the cockpit with the
side curtains on, but somehow it detracts from the enjoyment. And the view.

I am having a problem re assembling the metal brake lines at the front tee.The
tubing nut has a shoulder area before the threads start.Has anyone had a
problem with this shoulder becoming slightly flared preventing it from being
reassembled? Can the area be touched up carefully with a file?

Al,
That is a common problem. Sometimes they don't want to come apart
because of that happening. When making new lines, I have reused the
original nuts and ground them down so that they fit correctly in place.
And touching them up with a file should hurt nothing, though make sure
that you get it nice and clean before reassembling.
Charlie

Touch them up lightly with a file.
The seal is what looks like an inverted funnel, to the double flare of the
tubing.
The steel tubing nut is there just to push the double flare against the
fitting.
Overtightening of the tube nut is what causes the tube nut end to mushroom.

Yes and yes. I've used files and belt sanders which are much quicker,
but you need a steady hand to keep your fingers in the shape that God
intended them to be. <;^)

Hello Friends. I have always installed head gaskets clean and dry, but the workshop manual for the XPAG says it can be 'greased' before installation. I've never read that anywhere before!

What do you do?

Rick,

Yes...use a light-type general purpose grease and a very thin
coating; a thin coating as grease is incompressible and blobs and
gobs may keep the head from seating 100%. This will help the gasket
ease into it's new life.

Also, clean the studs so no detritus is scraped off to fall under the
gasket and create a pocket. Clean all block and head surfaces to
metal. Check the studs by pinching with thumb and finger full length
to see if the studs are stretching (especially the threads). I am
sure your TD has had the head replaced many times over the years and
the studs don't last forever.

That's right, and also don't forget to then run the engine for 15 minutes,
let it cool, then tighten down the head again once the grease has evened out
and the gasket has settled for the first time. Do tighten again after about
a hundred or so miles too.

Hello,
Ibm rebuilding the front axle assemble at present. Does any-one have a
photograph of the front brake plate showing the correct way round?
There a few permutations available and unfortunately the chap who removed them
cannot remember the correct position.
Thank you

If my memory serves me right, they are stamped LH and RH (I have a pair out
in the shed I can look at if necessary). Remember that the wheel cylinders
go on pointing in opposite directions--the one toward the front points
downward (i.e., the piston falls out when the shoes are removed).

Front brake backing plates really don't matter that much.
Slots for brake cylinders are vertical. 3 o'clock & 9 o'clock positions.
There is a hole in the backing plate, near the center. How you position the
backing plate on one side, do same on other side. Cannot remember the
way the plate looks right now. If hole can be put top or bottom, put to top
on both sides. If hole can be put front or back, place to back on both sides.

Rear brake backing plates are marked L/H and R/H. As the brake cylinder moves
in the slot, I believe that there is some arc to the slot. If you switch the
rear plates,
you can have the rear brake cylinder bind in the slot. Will wear only one of
the two
brake shoes.

David, the backing plates are 'faced'. You should find the letters 'RH'
and 'LH' stamped into them.
See

for a great series of images.

Following on from a recent thread I remember rushing to get Penny's TC at
least roadworty for the Ards TT celebrations some years ago. It was a
runner, but only just. No resto work, just get it running and legal.

Anyway, on the day it was very hot and she (the TC, not Penny) would start
up fine, idle and drive slowly. However, whenever we tried to accelerate or
put any real load on the motor, it would start to run very rough. Lots of
head scratching and new plugs, leads, rotor, fuel pump checked and even
fresh petrol had no satisfactory result. It was a chum, Mike Wilson who
turned up and suggested the condenser. Out came the brand new one and back
in went what might the original one. It worked perfectly and is still there.

Lesson learnt, new stuff isn't always best!

Cheers,

Geoff Rawlings

Hello,
Thanks to all who responded.
I have found VERY faint stamping on one back plate saying RH. By omission the
other one must be LH.
Ibll fit them them and the brakes and have them tested on a rolling road
brake test BEFORE driving!
Once again, thank you. [from Scotland}

Capacitors (condensers) usually fail shortly after installing them. If the survive the first few hours, they normally last nearly forever. I was told by a wise older car enthusiast that when replacing points, to look at the points and if there is no (or very little) material transfer from one contact to the other, the existing capacitor is matched very closely to the system in which it is installed (capacitors for autos generally have a tolerance of 20%, meaning that it can be 20% under or over stated value) and should not be changed. I have lived with that admonition and never changed the capacitor in our TD since we purchased it in 1974.

Cheers,
Dave
