Subject: [Mg-t] Moving on, and back to the garage
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: mg-t-bounces@autox.team.net

Hello Friends,

Politics and pets aside, its time to talk about cars. When my coworkers were grumbling I often reminded them of a philosophy I adopted years ago: 'Point Forward Thinking'.B There's nothing we can do about the past so why let it stress us?! Think about what we're going to do from this point forward. I'm going to the garage.

Today I hope to continue to prepare my TD's body tub for paint. Specifically, I'm going to brush
paint the inner surfaces of the tub, just to seal the bits of bare metal from moisture. The exterior is ready for paint but we're experiencing a week of off-and-on rain so our B south-coast humidity has been even higher than usual! Proper painting is out of the question.

Here's how things set this morning.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/20130930_165653.jpg

The battery box looks a little rough inside but it is sound. I have a nice, new battery tray and I'll cement a strip of rubber around the top of the box at the height of the battery top. I know that's not 'correct' but it does make a nice backing to which the battery is snugged by the clamp. It will also hide some previously damaged metal. Tool box will get a new felt lining, after paint.

On to the garage!

Happy Tuesday,

-rick

Errors-To: mg-t-bounces@autox.team.net

Hi Friends,

Spent a little time back in the garage today. I decided to start a
part of the job that I really enjoy: rebuilding and tuning SU (and
Weber) carbs. Here's how the TD's rear carb looked, just after
removal.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/20131006_162843.jpg

After a bath in ChemDip, light work on the wire brush, and a little
work with a brass cleaning brush, I had a pile of clean parts.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/20131007_113619.jpg

And after reassembly (of almost everything), here's a comparison of
before and after.

Just one more picture...

Today I mounted the rear carb on the manifold. It still awaits
snugging the various fittings down, float height, etc., which will be
easier when mounted on the manifold. Here's how the rear unit looks,
now bolted to the manifold.

Subject: [Mg-t] Rear of tub, paint
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: mg-t-bounces@autox.team.net

Hello Friends,

Here's a picture of the TD's tub, from the rear. I have included this
picture so you can see the weakness of the spray job. Full disclosure,
you see.

Across the rear of the tub, an inch or two below the edge, you can see
where I didn't in-fill some surface rust damage. The metal is sealed
with POR15 and primered but I did not do a smooth surface prep. Why?
Because this area is covered by the top of the fuel tank - and I can
have moments of extreme laziness. You can also see a 'run' near the
left tank strap mount. If this flaw can't be corrected with a 'run
cutter' and polish, I'll sand it down and respray this spot. Honestly,
the spot is mostly behind the spare so I may lazy-out and do nothing.
:-P

The wood behind the tank is painted with satin finish Rusoleum black paint.

Subject: [Mg-t] Mini-update on the TD
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: mg-t-bounces@autox.team.net

Hi Friends,

Been out of town AND have been working on the 1800ES since I got back
- until yesterday. Today, however, I did get a little work done on the
M.G..

Today I bolted the front of the tub to the chassis and I installed
grommets in the firewall. After that I installed the speedometer and
tachometer cables and bolted in a few more things. Here's how things
look now.

First of all, the steering column has been reinstalled.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/HPIM1415.JPG

Hardware bolted in place.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/HPIM1417.JPG

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/HPIM1418.JPG

I bolted the new battery in place, ready for cables.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/HPIM1419.JPG

Here's the starter switch. Notice the grommet through which the cable will exit.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/HPIM1420.JPG

The rebuilt fuel pump is remounted on fresh rubber vibration
isolators. Most applications I've seen show the turn signal flasher on
the inside of the firewall. Mine was on the outside when I got the car
so I mounted the new unit as I found the old one. Its an easy change
if needed.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/HPIM1421.JPG

Over on the other side, the tachometer cable is now through the
firewall grommet.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/HPIM1452.JPG

Here's a similar view on the other side of the firewall. The horn is
now also mounted.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/HPIM1453.JPG

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/HPIM1454.JPG

I tested and adjusted each horn when I rebuilt it, so all should be
well. Still, its easy access to wire the horn AND to adjust, if
required.

Here's a view of the engine now awaiting the wiring harness.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/HPIM1455.JPG

The harness is upstairs in storage.

While working on the M.G., I have also been preparing the Volvo 1800ES
for paint. Here's a look at the car, just FYI.

Subject: [Mg-t] Wiring the TD
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: mg-t-bounces@autox.team.net

Hello Friends,

Today I completed the wiring in the TD's engine room. Fun. Glad I
spent an hour with the schematic last evening!

A day or three ago I posted a note with a link showing the regulator,
fuse block, etc.. Here it is again.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/HPIM1452.JPG

The camera's electronic flash buggers the paint color but that's
unimportant. Of importance in the picture is the fuse block. Its
mounted upside-down! No one commented or corrected me. Perhaps they
didn't notice. Perhaps they didn't care. No matter. Its fixed now.

Over on the other side, next to the fuel pump, I had mounted the turn
signal flasher. That's where it was when I got the car. So I put it
back there.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/HPIM1453.JPG

When I examined the new harness, I realized that there were no wires
for the flasher on that end of the harness. They were over by the fuse
block, so I moved the flasher to the other side.

I also discovered that the harness design expected the turn signal
relay-box to be on the firewall, not in the cockpit. The harness wires
will not reach the correct (for my car) location. I did however, route
the wires inside the cockpit but haven't decided whether to splice
wire into the eight leads, or just move the relay-box to another
location, if that is even possible. I won't mount it in the engine
bay. Here's how that area looked wired, but before mounting the horn.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/HPIM1457.JPG

And after.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/HPIM1458.JPG

The grommet below the horn is there to protect the coolant temperature
tube, as it exits the firewall.

I connected the harness ground to the body using the hole provided,
and connected the white coil lead to the 'SW' coil terminal. There was
no wire included with the harness kit for the white-black wire from
the coil (CB) to the distributor - so I made one. I attached ring
terminals on a white wire and shrunk heat shrink tubing at the
connectors. Then with a Sharpie, I added a black stripe from
end-to-end. Yea, that's silly, but so am I. Here's how it looks.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/HPIM1459.JPG

Sadly, the black stripe doesn't show in the pictures. Here's another look.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/HPIM1462.JPG

Here is a close-ups of the wiring, illustrating the color codes. I
hope someone can use this first picture. I searched the web for an
hour trying to find one clear picture of the color codes for the later
generation regulator. Yes, I have the schematic but photographic
confirmation would have been nice. Here is the picture.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/HPIM1463.JPG

And here is the flasher with wiring.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/HPIM1464.JPG

Moving forward, the last connections made are at the generator. Here's
how they look.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/HPIM1461.JPG

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/HPIM1460.JPG

And that's it for the morning. I popped in for lunch and to send you
this note. I now need to clean up the garage. It is a MESS. With TWO
cars now being tweaked (the M.G. and the Volvo 1800ES), there are lots
of parts floating around. I don't want to get them mixed up or I could
end up with a TD speaking Swedish!

Happy Friday,

-rick

Hi Friends,

Just a couple of quick pictures this morning.

I tightened all the tub mounting bolts to verify the door alignments.
Here's a look at how they now fit.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/20131028_112257.jpg

No, the doors haven't been painted yet, but when remounted, the
alignment is really good.

Here's another picture of the cockpit with various bits being
reinstalled - some for alignment purposes (like the mirror), some for
final installation.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/20131028_112203.jpg

Ages ago, I posted a picture (link) of the throttle linkage showing
the throttle return spring attached to the exhaust header. A kind
listmember pointed out that the location was wrong, and that the
spring should be anchored to the starter.

Will someone please tell me how and where the spring attaches, and
even provide a picture, if possible? Thanks.

reinstalled the tunnel and attached the handbrake hardware (sans
handle). Here's how it looks, awaiting carpet.

http://www.aubard.us/MGTD/20131028_145319e.jpg

>From there I glued wooden toothpicks in the screw holes in the
sub-dash. I also put a new liner in the glovebox. No pictures there
yet.

I then went back to the engine where I set the float levels in both
carbs, added new screws to the linkage, and installed the overflow
pipes. Nothing other than the float levels is pre-set yet.

Hi Rick,

First of all: kudos for the excellent restoration job! I went through this
some years ago, albeit not so fast and probably with less degree of success.

Regarding your question, I think to remember (my TD sleeps around 50 miles
from my home) that the spring is attached to a small tapered bracket clamped
with the upper starter bolt, that you can see on the attached photo (with no
spring, indeed).

Regards.

Jesus

Hi again Rick,

Well, I just found a second photo with the bracket and spring that confirms my
memory (not that this happens very frequently..).

Regards.

Hello Friends,

I need to climb under the TD to wire the brake light switch and to
route the harness to the rear of the car. I am not comfortable
climbing under the car with the car on jackstands sitting ON casters,
so I mounted the wheels with new tires, and set them on the casters.
Nicely stable now. Wire on, Garth.

Looks awesome sitting on its own feet. Can't wait until its really on
the ground and running!
