Errors-To: mg-t-bounces@autox.team.net

Hi Friends,

Visited the paint shop today and saw my TD's front wings, a running
board and doors. The rest will be done by tomorrow. Here's a look at
the front wings, still in the paint booth drying area. The light is
morning sun coming through the windows so the paint looks Ferrari Red
(Rossa Corsa) not Autumn Red - but it really is darker red.

And here's a picture of the doors, hanging in a much darker part of the booth.

Errors-To: mg-t-bounces@autox.team.net

Picked up some of my TD's panels today and the color doesn't match.
The paint is the same but the primer isn't! I used a red primer, they
used a tan primer/sealer. And that is enough to make red paint
intensity differences (because thin paint is partially transparent).
We learn, we spend.

The professionally painted panels are SO nice, I'm going to respray
(most of) my car's tub and fuel tank. Pictures to follow.

Reassembly after repainting continues, and it goes smoothly except---except
for installation of the transmission tunnel.
Using original fasteners in the original holes, from which they came with
no difficulty (car has no rust), the tunnel fastens at the toeboard and is 3/4
inch long at the handbrake end, or fastens at the handbrake end and is 3/4
inch long at the toeboard. The tunnel seems to be lifted by gearbox,
somewhere, but with the rubber pad removed and the tunnel pushed around, there
are no tell-tale scratches in the paint to show where interference might be.
Can someone suggest what I am overlooking?

a reasonable price.

Errors-To: mg-t-bounces@autox.team.net

Hi Friends,

This is a cross-posted note to my MG and Volvo friends.

I hope to make progress on two fronts today. The first is prepping the MG body tub for (more) paint. The second is inventoring all the new 1800ES parts.

We're expecting nice weather tomorrow through Wednesday so I hope to use that window to respray the TD's tub. Two coats of the correct color red over the old red should do. I can then install the other body parts at my leisure. To get to that place I first need to sand the old paint so the new paint gets a better grip. That is todays goal.

Parts for the ES are plentiful but not complete. Some bits are just NLA, as the 1800 community knows. My goal is for today is to learn which original parts need to be refurbished. To do so, I first need to understand the new parts I have in hand. Some came with the car. Others were supplied in multiple, and sometimes partial orders.B

That's it. Thanks for listening. Just writing to you helps me to formulate the work plans.

Subject: [Mg-t] TD bonnet latches
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: mg-t-bounces@autox.team.net

Hi Friends,

I got a few free minutes this afternoon so I cleaned the bonnet
latches for my TD. Here's a look at the latch mechanism.

http://aubard.us/MGTD/20131223_144833e.jpg

In that picture you can see the two halves of the latch plus the
handle and the brass attachment screws.

I cleaned the latches on the wire wheel. Here's how they look after cleaned.

http://aubard.us/MGTD/20131223_145738e.jpg

Here they are with a thin coat of black paint on each side, now drying.

http://aubard.us/MGTD/20131223_152853.jpg

http://aubard.us/MGTD/20131223_153339.jpg

And here are all the left-overs.

http://aubard.us/MGTD/20131223_145746e.jpg

I have new handles and will purchase new brass screws to attach the
latches to the bonnet. Perhaps I'll buy stainless steel instead. Here
are the handles.

http://aubard.us/MGTD/20131223_152953e.jpg

I also bought new bonnet bumpers for the wings and will install them
before mounting the front wings.

Hey Friends,

Have a look at this pictures, please.

http://aubard.us/MGTD/bonnet_latches.jpg

Notice the rectangular brackets to which the bonnet latches grip.
Those brackets have an offset. That is, they're not flat. The problem
is, I can't remember whether the offset goes toward the wing or toward
the engine. The picture seems to indicate that the offset goes out
toward the wing - but the picture just isn't definitive.

Can you please have a quick look at your TDs and tell me the proper
orientation? Thanks.

The latch mechanism on my car was plated, but the hook on fender was
painted black.
The bow ) of the hook on the fender was outboard.

Hey Gang,

This may be old news but...

Have you seen this site?

http://www.retroclassiccarparts.com/

I was blown away! Haven't purchased anything from them (yet) but its
always nice to know they're there! That said, they have the
pin-retained knob for the T-Series dash lamp dimmer (and the dimmer)!
Moss has it listed as NLA.

Hey Gang,

Today I got my TD's distributor back from Len Fanelli. He did a full
rebuild for me. I haven't yet installed it in the TD's XPAG engine,
but will do so in the next day, or three (chilly here). Thanks Lenny.

More info when I have it.

It's getting chilly up here in Minnesota too. So cold my 16 year old actually
wore a jacket to basketball practice.

Tomorrow, high of -4F. He may even button the jacket up then.

:-)

I was reading a bunch of the year end car articles. What classics are 25 years
old now so you could possibly import them to the US. The Griffith made the
list.

Five more years and we could get an RV8...

What a topic, Paul!

I wonder which cars will be the classics of tomorrow - if any. We just
had this discussion over on a Ferrari list. The general opinion is
that the last Ferrari that will be a classic is the 328GTB or 328GTS.
Those are the last cars that have limited electronics in the fuel
injection and ignition. After that, the cars use limited production
unique computers.

Consider this: If your Toyota computer fails, there are original AND
aftermarket parts to repair it. That's because they sell MILLIONS. But
what will one do when one gets in a limited production 360, 458 (or
similar) and presses the 'START' button ... and nothing happens?! You
may just have discovered a really expensive parts car! Say it can't
happen? Try to buy a simple MAF for a 1999 348GTS. Used ones go for
over $600 and new ones are NLA. And the 348 uses TWO of these
expensive little buggers!

Perhaps I'm just old and grumpy but I just think the classic car hobby
is to have only one future outcome: The classics get older and more
costly, without replacements following them. In my discussions with
brokers, the general opinion is to hold on to your classics because
they're going to climb in value. Seven of my nine cars fit this
definition! The other two are daily drivers...

I didn't grow up in Houston so I understand! The confusion seems to
abound. I like cold weather. I don't like to be cold. Folks here seem
to assume that one is the same as the other. :-P

Happy Monday! I'm now 63 years and one day old!

I think I agree with you on tithe demise of collectible cars. Electronics
are going to end that.

As to weather, when it lived in San Diego, I was cold when it was 50F. Now
when it's 20F I wear a lighter jacket Than I wore in SD.
