Hi Friends,

My Volvo 1800ES project is almost complete. Well, its complete enough to
allow me to drive the car around in the driveway (and out of the way of MG
TD progress).

http://aubard.us/1800ES/20140726_102931.jpg

Today, I mounted the bonnet on the '53 TD. I first had to tweak the
radiator position a tiny bit but now both sides fit nicely. Here are a
couple of looks, work in progress.

http://aubard.us/MGTD/20141003_135642e.jpg

Its nice to be back working on old British iron. Besides, this is how the
dining room looks! Let's call it 'incentive'.

Spent a bit of time working on Team.Net today. Brought back the forums, though there
might be some missing posts. The latest backup of that data got trashed during the break
ins and power surges a while back. What fun.

But the overpaid, underworked chump behind the curtain does manage to get something
useful done once in a while. Check out the forum with the link below.

Hi Friends,

I only had a little time for car-play this afternoon. I used much of it digging parts out of boxes as my TD project re-commences. That's when I discovered that I hadn't painted the headlight support castings. So guess what I did with the rest of the time available.

Yes, I stripped the old paint from the left support and cleaned it further on the wire wheel. The bare metal was then primered and is now drying. Tomorrow I will prep and primer the right support. While the primer on both sides cures I will search for the bolts for one end and nuts for the other. Wednesday, those parts will get a nice coat of Autumn Red.

Now, the question: I have seen MG TDs with chrome headlight pods and chrome front trim bits, and other TDs with body color pods with chrome front trim bits. Which is correct for a late '53? Both? Or are the painted pods just an attractive solution for damaged chrome?

Hi Rick, The bar across the radiator should be black. It was a 'bought in"
part. Earliest cars had chrome pods with a medallion. It's said that the
chrome supply was reduced by needs for Korean conflict, and that the pods were
then painted. But then later they were chromed again, though without the
medallion, toward the end of production. Late 53, with turn signals, wiper
in center, round tail lamps very likely had the chrome pods w/o medallion.
Painted pods are subject to severe scratching by those who set the sides of
the bonnet down outside the pod. Owners do it once, if ever, but non-owners
who do not know about this can do ugly damage to paint. Given the choice, an
owner of late car would be wise to go for chrome.Bob

Consider the fact that the gasket has to follow the edge of the
combustion chamber in the head, not just the bores! A more relevant
photograph would be how it fits on the head ....

It looks like the typical gasket to me - and I recently had a genuine MOWOG
gasket in my garage. I haven't heard about any gasket failure between
cylinders as being typical, but I suppose it might happen if the mating
surfaces aren't properly prepared.
There are two head gaskets for the XPAG, one with round holes for round water
passages and one with the irregular oblong holes for oblong water passages.
The photo shows the correct combination.

Subject: [Mg-t] Starting to mount wings
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: mg-t-bounces@autox.team.net

Hello Friends,

Finished mentoring work today at 11:00am, right on time, so I rocketed home
in the Cayman, changed into proper cloths, and headed to the garage. I
removed three of the panels from the dining room and mounted them on the
tub and frame, with almost all bolts left loose. I did temporarily snug the
bolts between the front wing and the running board. Here's how the little
TD looks now.

I plan to attach the bonnet latches and verify a proper fit before
tightening the bolts. Thanks for that tip Bob. I also need to install the
welt between the wings and running board and the tub. Question: Do you guys
stick the welt in place or just depend upon the 'pinch' between the tub and
wings to hold it aligned? Or perhaps, stick it in place with double-stick
tape before tightening?

Yes, the rubber bumpers were originally attached with rivets, but I like
stainless steel.

LOL. We are obsessive at times. BTW, a few years ago, Nancy and I rode the Orient Express from London to Venice (return). The nickel plated screw heads in the compartments WERE all properly aligned. Old world attention to detail, echoed into the 21st century.B

</div>I hope you have all of the screw heads aligned the same way, Rick, just like when it left the factory...! ;-)
