Have you a current pic of the LBC? Here in CT, it's cold. I drove the TD
yesterday for errands around town. With a shield over the radiator, I got the
radiator temp to about 60C. We have had no salt applied to town roads in
Guilford, but State of CT has dosed all the numbered roads liberally. Rain
tonight and tomorrow may rinse some of it away. Until I know for sure, though,
the TD and MGB will not be travelling out of town.Bob

Hi Bob,

The TD is waiting for completion. Right side fenders on dining room table. Perhaps this weekend I'll make some progress.

Since we last talked, I bought a '78 Lotus Esprit S2. I guess its an EBC - Exotic British Car. :-P

More to come, but thanks for the interest!

Paul writes,

>B Just drive it more,B that does more good for these cars than anything else.

Golden advice for all our old cars. Fluids need to be circulated and seals need to be kept wetted. I'm in the process of cycling through my cars right now. They have set unused for too long and need exercise. Its a problem that I am fortunate to have - and I try to never forget it.

Today, after getting the front brakes back on the Lotus, then the hydraulics bled, I need to get the wings back on my MG TD, even if only loosely attached. At present, the right front wing and both valences are on the dining room table. That arrangement is NOT conducive to my health this week! Ergo, to the garage I go.B

Regarding the original topic, we are so tempted to panic over low oil pressure. And while it is an indicator of (primarily) bearing wear, it is also an indication of ample oil movement. Remember, a big part of oil circulation is bearing cooling. Fluid flushing the journals does that. Modern oils have great 'tear strenght'. That is, the resistance of the film of oil to tear apart allowing metal-to-metal contact. That is when damage occurs.

I tend to follow the adage of 5psi/1000rpm, is all that's needed - and those words were written for the oils we used 40 years ago! Today's oils are even better. I use 20w50 (Castrol GTX) in all my LBCs, and in my BBC (Big British Car). The Italian cars use synthetic oil (Mobil1) but in the viscosity recommended by their maker. I have no clue what's in our daily drivers because I don't waste my time maintaining them at home. They are just major appliances.

I hope to have added strength to Paul's words, not that our resident sage needs reinforcement. More honestly, I just wanted to say hello. Its been too long, my friends.

-rick
PS: As hinted above, I have added a '78 Lotus Esprit S2 to my collection.

Subject: [Mg-t] Bonnet latches
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: mg-t-bounces@autox.team.net

Hello Friends,B

I am embarrassed to have to ask this question again - but I will.

When attaching the bonnet latches and bonnet bumpers on the TD's front wing;

1. The bumper pads face outward so that the rubber pad touches the bonnet, when closed. That one is pretty easy.

2. The latch pieces are installed with the offset toward the engine, right? So that the latch pulls the bonnet inward and against the pads? Is that right?

I hate to ask this question of you because I have asked it before ... and have gotten your answers. Sadly, I just don't remember the answer.

To that end; Have you ever thought about how the binary issues are the easiest to confuse? That is, the issues with only two outcomes: yes or no, up or down, offset facing in or out, "Did I turn the coffee pot off, or not?"

Experts tell us that the confusion is because the human mind is so good a flipping symetry. Otherwise, we'd have a very hard time using the bathroom mirror or backing out of the driveway without hitting the trash cans!

Whew! I now don't feel so badly about asking again about latch orientation. But I would still appreciate your wise council.

-rick, with a TD wing that HAS to come off the dining room table today! "-o

Hi Rick, The rubber pads face outward, touching the bonnet, just as you
wrote. The latches install with the bow/curve/ ( -shape outward, toward
the bonnet also. That moves the opening of the hole a bit closer to bonnet
that if installed the other way. Attach the latches to the wing before
bolting wing to car, and not bolting tight. Fit the bonnet, latch the
latches, then snug everything. What seems like just a little movement in the
wings can make the difference between latches latching and just missing the
openings. As to the symmetry--certain drivers, more than one (and not I )
have driven over a small conifer near my driveway several times. Each has, in
embarrassed confession, noted that he/she (no gender bias here) had no trouble
in the past when backing out in a car using the mirrors, and that he/she had a
perfect view of the little tree in the back-up camera as it was being
flattened.

Hello Friends,B

I am embarrassed to have to ask this question again - but I will.

When attaching the bonnet latches and bonnet bumpers on the TD's front wing;

1. The bumper pads face outward so that the rubber pad touches the bonnet,
when closed. That one is pretty easy.

2. The latch pieces are installed with the offset toward the engine, right? So
that the latch pulls the bonnet inward and against the pads? Is that right?

I hate to ask this question of you because I have asked it before ... and have
gotten your answers. Sadly, I just don't remember the answer.

To that end; Have you ever thought about how the binary issues are the easiest
to confuse? That is, the issues with only two outcomes: yes or no, up or down,
offset facing in or out, "Did I turn the coffee pot off, or not?"

Experts tell us that the confusion is because the human mind is so good a
flipping symetry. Otherwise, we'd have a very hard time using the bathroom
mirror or backing out of the driveway without hitting the trash cans!

Whew! I now don't feel so badly about asking again about latch orientation.
But I would still appreciate your wise council.

-rick, with a TD wing that HAS to come off the dining room table today! "-o

LOL! Backup cameras are a great idea for spotting kids and pets otherwise out of view BUT, they are a VERY POOR replacement for mirrors and common sense!

Thanks for the latch correction.

And I see that the soon to be launched new Cadillac CT6 is replacing the
conventional interior review mirror with an oblong video screen fed by a
backup camera. Apparently, the new age engineers consider this a better
solution to the century old mirror. Source: Automotive News December 22,
