I really shouldn't type e-mails before allowing time to wake up! What I
meant to say in my last e-mail was, of course, MG TD Grille _shell_. And
I should have mentioned that it will fit a TC, even though there is a
detail difference at the starting crank handle hole.

All -=C2=A0 =C2=A0As I slowly progress in the re-assembly of my early ('50)=
TD I will solicit the wisdom of the group on a few topics:
(1) =C2=A0I just sent my Jaeger, flat-face, chronometric speedo to Mo-Ma fo=
r refurbishment ($!). =C2=A0Interestingly, it reads in km/hr vice miles/hr.=
=C2=A0Any idea why a British car would have a km/hr speedo, and how rare i=
s it?
(2) =C2=A0For those who have converted to wire wheels do we assume that the=
Moss spare wheel adapter is the default conversion? =C2=A0Has anyone run i=
nto an alternative adapter for the spare wheel, or is there a more "creativ=
e" way to do it?
(3) =C2=A0When I completed the dis-assembly of the car sometime around mid =
80's I noted that the big end of the steering gaiter did not have a clamp, =
but had a loop of wire tightened around the rubber with a neat little twist=
to finish it off. =C2=A0Amongst my old parts that I'm going through I actu=
ally found the original wire clamps that I had saved for "originality". =C2=
=A0The small end of the gaiter had the usual, but early design, screw-clamp=
. =C2=A0Any ideas how common or unusual the wire clamp is? =C2=A0I'm pretty=
sure it's original and very nicely done.
(4) =C2=A0I've noted that the color scheme shows the "hinge" connecting the=
lower seat cushions to the seat back is painted black. =C2=A0Mine were nev=
er painted, and are just cadmium (?) plated. =C2=A0Is this unusual?
=C2=A0 =C2=A0Hoping for some discussion/answers on these as the list seems =
quiet lately.
Thanks,WayneOjai, CA

While examining my front fenders in preparation for some metalwork, my
welder pointed out a ~3/8" wide metal strip tacked (welded or brazed every
six inches or so) to the inside of each rolled edge on the outside edge of
each fender. He thought that it was not a factory item, but something
added. I can post pictures if it would be helpful. I'm not aware of any
MGTDs closer than an hour, so would someone please reach behind the rolled
edge of their front fender above the tire and tell me if there's a strip or
just the rolled edge? They run from just behind the curved front end to
nearly the rear end of the fender.
Thanks!

I can post pictures if it would be helpful. I'm not aware of any MGTDs
closer than an hour, so would someone please reach behind the rolled edge of
their front fender above the tire and tell me if there's a strip or just the
rolled edge? They run from just behind the curved front end to nearly the
rear end of the fender.

Wow, thanks for all the responses! I can confidently say this is a factory
item, and there seem to be two theories on its purpose. I'm leaning towards
spray deflection, as they aren't going to stiffen the edge unless they are
welded continuously to the fender. Er ... wing, as I know I ought to say,
but I'm on the wrong side of the pond. I will clean them up for primer,
then off to the welder to repair the rough areas/stress cracks and the
strip's tack weld where it has broken free.

In the future, I will endeavour to use the proper name and spelling. ;)

Thanks again!
Stan

Subject: [Mg-t] Oil Cooler for TD?

=C2=A0 =C2=A0I purchased an oil cooler kit (without instructions) from Moss=
many years ago and never doubted that it would be a straight-forward insta=
llation. =C2=A0Now that I'm actually reaching that part of my rebuild I'm f=
inding that installing a TD oil cooler is not trivial. =C2=A0I know that th=
e TD may not actually NEED an oil cooler, but wanted to do it for a larger,=
 future project.
=C2=A0 =C2=A0Does anyone have a front-mounted oil cooler, or know someone w=
ho has one? =C2=A0I have the old TSO CD (somewhere), but haven't tried look=
ing there yet unless someone refers me to an article. =C2=A0Can't imagine t=
his hasn't been done before.
Thanks for any info.
