Hello Friends,
While watching an episode of Inspector Alleyn this evening, I (of
course) noticed that there is a black TD with red leather, used in the
show. It has flat black headlight pods and a bare wood dashboard. Were
either factory correct, either export or for the home market?

Hello,

No. A for the headlights early ones were chromed, and were replaced by a
color that matched the body.

For the dash as original they were covered by the same materiel as the
interior upholstery and in the same color.

Regards,

Scott

Hello Friends,
If using Champion spark plugs in a '53 TD with 89 octane petrol at (up
to) 10% alcohol, is it advisable to use a slightly hotter plug (RN5C)
versus the recommended (RN4C) plug? I also have NGK BPR6EIX platinum plugs
in hand, in the correct heat range. Advice?

Rick

RN5 is what I always used, aside from experiments with NGK. They had the nice tan colour one wants. Fuel in CT is 10% alcohol, and the engine ran very nicely.
BPR6 is approx the same heat range, also used in MGBs.
Either should work well for you. Just judge by the colour.

Thanks Folks, for the opinions. I was just interested in what others use.
We must remember that the XPAG was designed to run on just about anything
that one can get into the tank. Britain was still rationing most everything
when these cars were built. And the quality of petrol was quite poor.
That's why I am not picky about what feeds my TD.

So quiet here! Thought I would make some noise - even with a little MG
content. But first...

This morning I'm going to the shop to make a little progress on three
fun cars: Timing the TR6 project car's ignition, replacing a pipe in the
Testarossa fuel injection, and getting the Maserati up on wheel casters.
Pretty amazing stuff, eh?! Now for the MG bit.

I'm putting a new top on my '53 TD! I had the 3-bow sticks blasted and
powder coated in cream tan. They were careful to keep powder out of the
hinge points. So after a little oil, everything moves smoothly.

The sticks are remounted on the tub and align properly at the
windscreen. Canvas on the header rail is going on (almost) as I type. That
will be my job this afternoon. Pictures to follow.

I also had the side screen frames powder coated. Tan, of course. New
canvas will go on them too, after the top is on, so the alignment can be
precise. More pictures then too.

So what are you working on? Spring has sprung in the Northern
Hemisphere. You cars coming out of hibernation? Good stories?

Rick, in northwest Houston

You might consider putting felt weather-stripping (for around windows =

north here) on the header rail instead of the foam that probably came =

My experience was that the foam for the front rail was useful for a top i=
nstalled by a canvas shop, but that when I installed a new top, foam was sup=
erfluous as the rain did not blow in.
The difference, it seemed to me, is that the flap that drops down onto th=
e chrome frame top rail must be fitted as low as the cut-outs for wipers per=
mit. That flap piece is installed first; time spent fitting it is well spen=
t.

So quiet...
I don't have any fabrication info to contribute but I sincerely enjoy
reading all the discussions. My '52 TD still sits patiently in the garage
waiting for me to dedicate time to it.
Keep up the good work and all the info sharing!
Thanks to everyone!

This is Liz, Dave DuBois' wife. Dave passed away in late January but I have=
kept his email address 'alive' so people with fuel pump questions can be st=
eered to someone who might be able to help them.

Meanwhile, I have a couple of questions. I have a collection of magazines I=
would to send to a good home. Where can I advertise these?

"The Sacred Octagon" from July 1974 through Dec 1987, plus Oct 1999 and Apri=
l through Aug 2009
"MG Magazine", v.2 1980, v.8 1981-82, v.15-26 1984-1987, v.42 1992 and v.68 1=
998
"Enjoying MG" Sept 1987, Nov 1988
"Safety Fast" Nov 1983, Jan 1986, May 1987
"North American Classic MG", Issue #1 Winter 2001, #2 Spring 2001 and #14 20=
04
"Classic & Sportscar", Feb 1992
"British Car", Dec 1989
"Abingdon Classic" v.1, #1 Oct 1981
"Mowog Murmurs", Nov 1992

I also have two model kits...
Finecast 1/24 scale white metal Auto Kit, Ref A 018; 1950 MG TD
and
Revell Highway Pioneers series model. 1953 MG Sports car. H-52-79. Plastic=
model that has never been assembled. Like new even if the box looks ancien=
t!

Where can I advertise them? I can send photos of the models.

Liz DuBois

Didn't get any of that done.

Thanks Sarah. I have a nice roll of felt but maybe closed-cell foam
instead? I'm concerned about the felt holding water.

I hope so too Mark, and thank you for this service!

Yea, that makes good sense. When I trial fitted the wrap, the flap kept
trying to lift away as I pulled the canvas snug. I will follow your lead
and make sure that the flap is low and aligned properly.

Love your projects! Here in Texas, the DMV doesn't even have to see the
car. When I lived up in Oklahoma, the DMV had to visually verify the VIN
but only for cars with out-of-state titles. They did not have to run.

My TR6 has new brakes all around but there is an obstruction in the rear
circuit. Not a drop of brake fluid will flow. Perhaps I pinched a line when
installing the new rear flex hose?

LOL! I retired six years ago. Today, I can't imagine how I ever had time
to work!

Gulp! Glad that's sorted. I bought my Maserati Biturbo E with a lost
California title...and then a dead PO! It took me over a year to get that
one straightened out! I ended up with a bond title, but the car is mine now
and licensed as such.

Nice to hear from each of you again. I put new plugs in my XPAG but
probably need to clean the SU jets and needles. I also need to install a
new choke cable. Oh, and another thing...

When I reupholstered my car's seat back, the springs were rusted beyond
repair, so I used foam; Too much foam. I made the seat back too thick and
without the curved profile. It's comfortable but a bear to get in and out.
I'm going to undo it all, reshape the foam, and reapply the upholstery. An
electric carving knife is the perfect tool for shaping foam.

That's it from my corner of Houston. Yours?

Bill,

Thanks for the suggestion.  I lucked out and found a willing recipient
who will make them available to other interested folks. Very thankful to
have them go to a new home.

Cheers,
Liz
