I'm finishing the seemingly unending rebuild of an MGA= 1600 motor, and am stuck with a leak. When I had a failure of a brass plug= , I chose to replace the big plugs at the end of the long oil galleries wit= h 1/4" NPT steel plugs. I tapped the bores, like I see advice for in m= any places, and installed the plugs. (I have since seen that the .505"= bore is too large for the tapping operation, which should have started at = 7/16", so that probably explains the leak.) I used Permatex Ultra Blac= k on the plugs. Months later (did I say it seemed never-ending?) I installe= d the motor into the car and fired it up for the 20-minute cam installation= run. It looked good at first, but after 20 minutes I have a foot-wide pudd= le of oil under the front crossmember. I pulled the motor back out and foun= d the right-front plug was leaking. I removed the plug, then tried again us= ing Avation Form-a-Gasket. No change to the leak. Tried it (from advice) wi= th Permatex Thread Sealant with PTFE. The leak is slower, but still a probl= em. I am about to JB Weld the plug into place, but have concerns about its = permanence. Will I be able to remove the plug at next rebuild, or at least = have a machine shop do it without machining the block? Is there something e= lse to try first? I have cut away the front plate to allow plug removal wit= hout disassembly, and am using a pre-oiler to pressurize the system so I do= n't need to R/R the motor with each attempt. I want to put a radio in my MGB GT and puzzled as to where to site the speakers. Is it alright to cut a circle in the body work either side of where ones legs go - seemingly into the wing cavities? I could then cut holes in the panels to match. I presume if I do that I should wrap the speaker's backs in plastic in case of water ingress to the area. The other option seems to be either side of the console well back towards front?

Incidentally, as my car us nowhere near original, I am installing Speedhut tach and speedo gauges - the latter is GPS driven...ohhhhahhhh awesome

a radio in my MGB GT and puzzled as to where to site the speakers. Is it alright to cut a circle in the body work either side of where ones legs go - seemingly into the wing cavities? I could then cut holes in the panels to match. I presume if I do that I should wrap the speaker's backs in plastic in case of water ingress to the area. The other option seems to be either side of the console well back towards front? Subsequent examination of th= e stub revealed an air pocket in the plastic right at the center of the bas= e of the blade. Moss accepted my photo of this as evidence of a manufacturi= ng flaw. This model of fan was already out of production (and out of warran= ty) =E2=80=94 I had purchased it as part of a large order back in 2015 when= the car body was still in the paint shop.

But rega= rdless, they decided to send me a new fan ("new model" nylon 7-blade fan) a= nd a new aluminum radiator (the shop had told me mine was irreparable). I t= hought this was pretty decent of them.

I just picke= d up my head at the machine shop where they had skimmed the surface and cle= aned up the valves. In the meantime I had inspected the lifters based on a = tip from Dave at British Motorsports in Campbell and found a few of them we= re showing pitting. By replacing them now I can save the cam.

Now I just need to pick up the lifters and the gasket set and I = should be able to have it back together this weekend.

A few tips based on my experience:

1. Just shut = it down. If I had stayed out on the freeway verge I would have saved the he= ad gasket, and AAA would have picked me up in a timely manner. But since I = had reported myself =E2=80=9Csafe=E2=80=9D and off the highway, it took 4 h= ours to get a tow.

2. Check your lifters ever= y so often. I had replaced the cam and lifters due to lifter spalling somet= ime between 1998 and 2010. The new lifters were just starting to pit in 201= 8.
