I feel bad missing all of Septembers rides!

First there was fishing in Oregon and then last week I got to ride on my
Tractor all day.

On October 12 I am being forced to go visit that Granddaughter in San Diego.

So I won't be going to Sturgeons Mill with you which I am bummed about.

I do know that Cheryl and Denis know how to get there though.

See you on October 26th I hope.

Happy Trails

JOHN KENNER

I recently discovered this website out of the UK
and thought it might be of interest to fellow British car enthusiasts.

http://www.oily-rag.net/

This is their philosophy:

What, one may ask, is Oily Rag? To us, Oily Rag
means the gentle art of leaving well alone.
Whatever it may be a bike, a car, a house, a
painting, a piece of furniture or clothing it
is only original once. To restore it, no matter
how skilfully or accurately, is in our view to
destroy the evidence of use that is a major part
of the appeal of an antique or vintage object, as
opposed to even a careful reproduction.

Hi NOBBC,

I am looking for a car count of how many are coming for Saturdays
drive. You don't have to commit (as per our club standards) I'm just looking
for a ballpark so I can call them. With any luck we might be able to get
grouped together in their lot.

Thanks,

Hi NOBBC,

I am looking for a car count of how many are coming for Saturdays drive. You
don't have to commit (as per our club standards) I'm just looking for a
ballpark so I can call them. With any luck we might be able to get grouped
together in their lot.

Thanks,

Sheryl and Dennis

Troop 220 would love for y'all to come by some time.

The Auto Shop students are learning the basics on my 1965 Triumph Spitfire
that is currently on a lift, sans body....

Which reminds me: One of the students is looking for as many old car horns
as he can find. Especially if they are the "tunable" type, such as on old
Spitfires, and other cars. He's hoping to gang a number of them together by
the end of the year, tune them, and be able to play a tune on car horns at

The Car Club at the High School would love either a "mini-car show", or one

Hello Mitch,

Here's what I think:

In the far distant past a zillion years ago I was a high school teacher in
the South City Jefferson Dist.; so I have an affinity for young adults,
especially those in vocational programs. that said, I am a retired British
Car Shop owner and mechanic. Old British Mechanics never die; they just
wrench away. I have a bunch of old horns that you can come and retrieve at
my home shop in SW Santa Rosa. I currently am replacing all brake lines and
rebuilding calipers on a Mk2 Jaguar the horn person might like to see.

My Marine Corps League Detachment in Santa Rosa sponsors Troop 999 in
Windsor. Maybe you can get together with scoutmaster Keith and the club
can do a session for both troops?? I think your troop helps us with the
Memorial Day Avenue of Flags?

I have a few Spit odds and ends you can have.

See ya,

Robin

Hi Mitch,
I'm guessing you are a member of NOBBC, right? Not sure, I know you yet.
However, I would be delight to come to the school and have the kids see my
roadster. I am not in unity with the policies of the Boy Scouts, so until
they support equal rights for gays I would not bring my car to an event.

Please call me if you would like me to bring "Mr. Toad" to class. My
husband & I live in Santa Rosa. I am retired and would love to give rides
in my car. The first pix is older before I had the interior redone to match
the biscuit grill has required.

I love to talk about my car or just have people admire it.

How unfortunate that you would send a mean spirited and might I add
unchristian email. Shame on you . I am appalled that you would make such a
statement You should keep your own narrow minded comments and thoughts to
your self. Mr toad should go back to road hall and take some sensitive and
compassion training. Julia LaRosa

Howdy all!

A while back, someone posted that they were sad that no school, and no Boy
Scout troop had taken up the offers of the club to come and show off the
cool Little British Sports cars.

I'm the Auto Shop teacher at Santa Rosa High, and mentor for the High School
Car Club. I'm also Scoutmaster for Troop 220 in Windsor.

The Car club at SRHS would love to have y'all come by some time.

He's hoping to gang a number of them together by
the end of the year, tune them, and be able to play a tune on car horns at
the End of the School Year "Harvest Fair" and Car Show that we have here
each year.

The Car Club at the High School would love either a "mini-car show", or one
person who might be willing to bring their car in at lunch on a Tuesday, and
let the club members look in, on, and all around it.

What do y'all think?

Sorry Julia,
I agree with Betz and don't understand why you think her response was either
mean spirited or unchristian, whatever that is. I would say shame on you
for blasting her for having an opinion different than yours. Seems to me
the Boy Scouts and you are the narrow minded ones. The BSA has taken the
position that, if you are a gay young man/boy there is something wrong with
you and therefor you have no place the the BSA, that you might somehow
contaminate other boys.
I was a cub scout/webelo, first class scout, and then sea scout in the 50's.
I supported the scouts well beyond my time in the scouts but when they
decided the gay boys were unfit to be scouts I stopped. At that point I
realized they were not accepting of people as "God" created them.
If anybody needs to take a course in sensitivity it is you Julia.
I would suggest you start with Mathew 7. Read all of it.
It is not your place to judge gays or Betz. For you to suggest that Betz is
unchristian is unconscionable.
Scout Law: A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous,
kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. There is no
mention in the law about being a bigot. If you knew the scout law you would
have noted "...helpful, friendly, courteous, kind..." Your comment was non
of these.
Or maybe the last last six words of you pledge of allegiance would be
appropriate. "...with liberty and justice for all."
Sorry Betz.
Nobody deserves to be talked to like Julia has talked to you. And nobody
deserves to be treated like the BSA has treated young gay boys. Shame on
both .

Howdy all!

Autoshop Teacher Mitch would like to say "Thank you"!, and we'll be giving
you a call! If any others would be interested, We'd greatly appreciate it.

And, yes, I'm a member, but I've been mostly in "lurker" status, as I
slowly build my Spitfire.

Scoutmaster Mitch would like to say, "Troop 220 in Windsor will not turn
any boy away from scouts who comes to take part in Scouting. We don't care
how that particular switch is wired in your brain. It has never been an
issue, and the church that supports us supports this view.

BSA National has reversed it's original statement banning Gay Scouts, but
not completely, and will be revisiting the issue in, I believe, another
year. (a questionnaire was sent out to all units, and the response that
they got was NOT what they expected)

As "Boy Scouts of America" doesn't support having sex with Scouts, it
shouldn't matter if they aren't having gay sex, or aren't having straight
sex, because it won't be an issue at a Scouting event....."

So, If y'all would like to come out to one of our meetings, or, if y'all
might want to have a rally that might take some time at the "Vineyard of
Faith" off Arata in Windsor on some weekend, we'd love to have the scouts
see the cars.

For that matter, the Church is getting a Friday Night Gearhead group going,
and the Pastor rebuilds classic cars in his "spare" time. (I don't attend,
but I do like what they are doing!).

Thank y'all, and have a good one!

-Mitch

Subject: Re: [NOBBC] Visit to a High School, Moderator comments

Hi Mitch,

Thanks very much for your emails on this subject. I was the person who
first suggested, several weeks ago, that we think about having a show
and shine or other activity at a school to encourage and foster
appreciation for our old cars with younger people. I thank you for
stepping up and expressing your willingness to help make this happen,
and would love to participate.

One of my most formative experiences was auto shop in high school, as I
was already a gearhead from a much younger age, but without the
technical guidance needed to better develop my skills until that shop,
and subsequent exposure to older mechanics willing to teach me
invaluable lessons. I am just happy to hear there is still an auto shop
in any school around! Even earlier than that, I was greatly influenced
by the British and European cars prevalent in my neighborhood when I was
young, and the willingness of many neighbors to let me sit in them, get
a ride, see their workshop, etc.

Regarding the discussion about Scouts, I also appreciate your comments,
and in particular, the way you have responded. I think we need to be
aware of the hazards of painting all others with the same broad brush.

NOW DONNING MODERATOR HAT TO ALL MEMBERS:
Opinions, whether religious or political, expressed in forums or lists
like this run the risk of snowballing into personal attacks. DO NOT make
personal attacks on this list or the Yahoo Forum. If you have a gripe,
take it off-list, or better yet, discuss it in person with the subject
of your comments. If you don't agree with this policy, you are welcome
to take over the position of list and group administrator/moderator, but
I will hold members to this policy as long as I am in this role.

BACK TO MITCH:
Interesting Pastor you've got there, restoring classic cars. Tell us more?

Anyone else interested in helping Mitch put something together,
preferably before the rains begin?

Best to you all,

Greg Tatarian

P.S. By far, the greatest amount of traffic for our club occurs on the
Yahoo Group. Please consider joining that group so you can participate
more, and be notified of events. If you are on both this list and the
group, make sure to cross-post if you want the active membership to see
your posts.

Subject: [NOBBC] New information about new signups for Yahoo Group
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: nobbc-bounces@autox.team.net

Hi Folks,

A couple of folks have reported recent troubles joining the NOBBC Yahoo
Group with anything other than a Yahoo email account. It seems Yahoo
made a number of recent changes, some affecting which browsers with
which it displays properly, and how new signups are handled.

If you want to use your Facebook or Gmail account to join the NOBBC
Yahoo Group, you must now create a Yahoo profile in Facebook or Gmail first.

Here's the procedure:

"Create profile" when trying to sign in to Yahoo Groups

If you've never created a Yahoo profile for your Facebook or Google
login, you'll need to create one first before you can use one of them to
sign in to Yahoo Groups.

Creating a Yahoo profile for your Facebook or Google account

 1. Visit Yahoo Groups <http://groups.yahoo.com/>.
 2. Click *Sign In*.
 3. Click *Facebook* or *Google*.
 4. Enter your login information, then click *Sign In*.
 5. Click the name of the group you're trying to access.
 6. Click *Create new profile*.
    - You may be prompted to enter your login information again as a
    security precaution.
 7. Click *Add an alias*.
 8. Enter the alias (username) you'd like to use.
 9. Click *Save*.
10. Click *Close*.
11. Click *Continue*.
12. Click *View Group* to access your group.

Sorry for the hassle - we have to work with the tools that are out
there. If you don't want to bother, please stay on this list; we
retained this simple mailing list for those who want the bare minimum in
communication from the NOBBC. However, be aware there are quite a few
more members on the Group, and you won't be seeing the files, photos,
and many of the messages from members.

Cheerio,

Greg Tatarian

Hi Sheryl,

Thanks very much for asking, and hope you have a good weekend away.

Since the weather is still nice, we are still on our 2nd and 4th
Saturday, which makes this coming Saturday a club drive. I've updated
the Yahoo Group calendar and two reminders will be sent soon. Still
trying to get a handle on the many changes made to the Yahoo Group site.

To All Members - it may not be possible for regular drive leaders to
attend, but don't let that keep you from showing up and heading out on a
British Car drive!

Cheers,

Greg Tatarian

I can't make it this week. Too much on the Honey Do list.

I'm jealous about the Rover 3500. I love those. Leather seats?

No doubt, really, but from what I've read and witnessed, the effects are
more in the urban areas where there is alternative transportation, or
where the jobs allow work from home. I think technology advancement away
from internal combustion has had a huge effect as well, and it's
inevitable. How many young people have ever seen a 35mm slide or
listened to a 33-1/3 LP (or even seen one)?

Good news is there is still a bug in our human brains that likes
mechanical things, and another that likes old things. Which is why more
of us need to respond to Mitch Utsey about bringing our cars over to his
school. Ahem. Nothing but crickets so far...

I can attest to the number of kids who are still aspiring gear-heads.

The cars in the 80's were hard to "hot rod", but the current crop are
easily modded. There is plenty of room for physical modification, and the
electronics are making it easy to increase performance AND efficiency.

This generation's hot rods won't look like ours, but they are there.

And I'm doing my best to break them of the desire to put those abominable
"Camber Kits" on their Japanese cars that kick the tires out at 45
degrees....

-Mitch

ps, most of my students are learning about 8-tracks. I'll be bringing in my
system from the house to the school shop, because it isn't are REAL shop
without an 8-track player............

Subject: [NOBBC] WINTER DRIVE SCHEDULE
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: nobbc-bounces@autox.team.net

Hello Folks,

We are now in our winter drive schedule - 3RD SATURDAY EACH MONTH -
until spring. I've made the November entry in the Events calendar in the
NOBBC Yahoo Group. To see the Events calendar, log in to the group page,
then select Events from the menu items near the top.

Nothing is stopping anyone from putting together an extemporaneous drive
on another date if the weather is nice, however, so don't be shy.

Small turnout this past Saturday - just Jim, Ray and myself, and we all
had chores at home so talked cars and boats for 45 minutes then hit the
pavement back home. Would have been a nice day for a drive, though.

Till next time,

Greg Tatarian

Hi Dawson,
I'm forwarding your message to the Yahoo Group members and will add it
to the calendar. You might consider posting updates or a reminder closer
to the date. You can post directly to the YG using your email address,
as you are currently signed up there as well as on the autox list.
Cheers,
Greg
