Subject: [Spits] GT6 overdrive shifter length?
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: spitfires-bounces@autox.team.net

Years ago, when I made a shift lever to install on the overdrive conversion
for my 70 GT6, I fashioned it after a standard length shift lever. Over
the years I discovered that the overdrive lever is really slightly shorter
in length than a standard lever.
I have tried to find one, but they seem to be made of UN-obtainaium!!
I am considering re-making the lever, but would like to get the proper
length of the overdrive lever as fitted to the GT6.
(yeah I know that the 70 should have a column lever operated OD, But I like
the shift lever mounted one better)
Anyway, does anyone have a GT6 with shift lever mounted switch, that could
measure the lever (from the end of the bend to the knob where it is screwed
on as fitted would be fine) I can add the length of the knob to get
overall length.
In other words, the straight section just after the bend, to where the knob
is fitted, (or to the end of the actual lever if the know id not fitted)

Thanks!

April 11th, 1991 - Team.Net becomes an official domain. For a few years
before
that, though, the basic foundation was getting built up. It has been a
long ride
from those days until now. We are still here.

And we can continue on for who knows how many more years?

If you'd like to help Team.Net continue, consider putting a few dollars
towards keeping it on the air:

Subject: [Spits] Rear axle hangers
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: spitfires-bounces@autox.team.net

I was doing some cleaning in the garage yesterday, and came across a pair of
rear axle hangers. I'm don't remember what they were actually
called. The bolt
to the body/spring and then the trunion for the axle bolts in at the bottom.

Anyone interested in them? I think they are in good shape and not bent or
anything. I'm looking to get just the shipping for them which should be $15-30
depending on if I can get them in 1 UPSP flat rate box.

I live in Virginia Beach, VA USA.

Spit List - Please respond directly to Gary Dabrowski at
gdabrowski@yahoo.com if you know of a suitable candidate that is for sale.
My guess is that he would like to stay within New England or the
mid-Atlantic states. Thanks.

Subject: [CTR] Looking to buy a Spitfire

Looking for a solid later Spitfire to be a younger fella's first LBC.
My sons friend has been bitten by the LBC bug. The perfect car ought to be
solid and drivable, with a decent interior and and at lease ok paint, good
condition engine and trans, manageable or little rust. Small cosmetic and/or
mechanical projects having to do with maintenence ok. The lad will be using
this car to "learn" auto mechanics and all about the "charm" of owning a
classic British sports car. (Won't be his daily driver) Has to be located in
southern New England area (shopping access for him and his dad, and I).
Please reply here with your offerings to me and I'll forward them along. If
you have anything that looks close to this let me know. He is not looking
for a project car.

Gotta be a Spitfire: this guy has his heart set on one. A later car is
preferred.

Subject: [Spits] Incandescent to LED Conversion
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: spitfires-bounces@autox.team.net

I'm looking to perform an conversion from incandescent to led lamps for my
instrument and dash of my Spit-Six Project car. I researched the Triumph
archives and found a reference to http://www.ledtronics.com/.

Which exactly are the bulb numbers for the screw based bulb (.36" dia. base,
.44" bulb dia. & .93" length) marked as 12V 2.2 watts.

Same for a bayonet-based blub (.36" dia. base, .44" bulb dia. & .93"
length), also 12V and 2.2 watts

Same for a bayonet-based blub (.27" dia. base, .257" bulb dia. & .77"
length), also 12V and 2.2 watts

Which LED's would be the best replacement? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Dan,

Here are links to LEDs I used in my Spitfire and my wife's TR250. They
make the gauges very visible at night.

There are a few things I discovered though.
One problem is that they have so little resistance that the dash light
rheostat doesn't do anything to the brightness of the LEDs. Hasn't
really bothered me.

Two you have to be careful putting them in as the light part is not
tightly fixed to the base. I twisted one of them apart screwing it in.

Three they are a little long to fit inside the domed light filter in the
gauges. Some of those domes were already split open, so I just removed
them. I did not use the LEDs for any of the indicator lights (brights,
oil, ammeter, turn signals,etc).

Here is a link to the dash lights I put in my wife's TR 250. They are
screw base, which is what I suspect you want.

http://www.dealextreme.com/p/e10-1-2w-6500k-70-lumen-5-smd-led-car-white-light-bulbs-pair-dc-12v-51359

Here is a link to bayonet based like Spitfire's use.
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/ba9s-1-2w-70-lumen-6500k-5-smd-led-car-white-light-bulbs-pair-dc-12v-51198

They also have the ones that look kind of like fuses that some of the
Triumphs use as trunk lights.
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/36mm-0-3w-6-led-6500k-27-lumen-white-light-bulb-for-car-dc-12v-51170

I tried these:
http://www.ledlight.com/e10-screw-base-t10-concave-led-light.aspx, but
they didn't make the gauges any brighter.

Subject: [Spits] Spit manifolds removal

Errors-To: spitfires-bounces@autox.team.net

Wise (and less frustrated) ones,I am trying to remove the intake and exhaust
manifolds on a '71 and not having much luck. All the manuals/books I have are
vague. I have removed:main nuts along the top of the intake offend studs at
either end of the exhaust manifoldnut (but not stud) securing the intake to
the exhaust manifoldstuds have been snapped at the exhaust down flangeTwo
things that appear to be hanging on:dowels in the top of the intake flanges -
not sure how to removetwo more main nuts under the intake holding the exhaust
to the head (can't get to these yet)What am I missing or how do I remove the
two things above if that is all that is left? Suggestions?
Thanks,
--John Henard

John, I feel your pain, most especially my knuckles are tingling.
I have an open-end wrench of the correct size, where I ground down the other
end (the round end) enough that I was able to get the wrench behind the
metal coolant pipe to get at those nuts. One has to turn the wrench front to
back several times during the process as you may only be able to get an
eighth of a turn at a time. On some of my cars, those nuts were the longer
versions, which made them easier to remove.
In my experience at least, the dowels were a non-issue once all the nuts
were removed.
Application of a penetrating fluid like PB Blaster may help, and enable you
to turn them by hand once you've freed them off.
Hope that helps
Nick Moseley

Not necessarily, but you have to remove all the nuts before you can remove
either manifold. The knobs under the nuts are pressing on one side against
the exhaust and on the other side against the intake manifold flanges.

The nuts on the bottom are an incredible pain to reach. (The dual SU
manifold is much easier to deal with.)
Once you get the manifolds off, replace all the studs and nuts, and use
lots of anti-seize compound when reassembling.
Then you won't have as much difficulty in the future.

Subject: [Spits] hubcap search
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: spitfires-bounces@autox.team.net

Hi,

Unfortunately I lost a hubcap from my 74 spitfire (but I believe the hubcap I
am looking for actually was an option in 1969) b see link for pic. The
hubcap covers the whole wheel and not just the lugnut area like most. I
havenbt found them at any of the regular suppliers. If anyone knows where I
could get one (ie. a supplier or if you have one b or more b in your
garage) I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Hi Jim, look on Ebay. I have a 69 Spit with these hubcaps and I got my last
two there. Was a pair there two/three days ago.
Also strangely enough, hubcaps off an early 60's Dodge Dart are so similar as
to be spooky. Don't say 'Spitfire' on them but otherwise very very similar.
Good luck.

Gents,Thank you for the suggestions. After a good general cleaning, I plan to
use vinegar and then move to CLR. I bought a bottle of CLR and when I read the
instructions is said to keep away from brass, copper and aluminum so I am
being a little cautious. Now I just need to find time when the wife is away to
turn the sink into a lab.
Thanks,

Those are mine - I just need to get out to the shop (not as easy as it used to
be) to make sure I still can find them.
