Considering the need for engine work that might amount to more than a
cylinder head rebuild, you could probably get at least $5000 for it in
running order. I would say its value is approaching the $3000 mark with the
outstanding repairs not completed.

Subject: [Spits] Selling Spit maybe

The info below gives particulars on my 1500, which due to life circumstances
I am seriously considering selling. I'm looking for feedback about
reasonable asking price.

 I live in southeastern Washington.

Car not currently running, needs engine work. Head is off. I think the
engine problem is related to a broken oil pump resulting in the two seized
valves on #4. But that is just a guess since I haven't had the time to
check further. Loss of #4 resulted in loss of power, the engine was
immediately shut down and the car towed home.

Second owner. Purchase July 1990 at 49k, garaged 90% of time when not
driven. Seldom driven in winter. Driven on several long trips, up to 2000
miles, as a daily driver in good weather. Current mileage: 94k +

Includes: Hard top, soft top, tonneau cover, spare tire cover, 1 set
American mag wheels and 1 set of OEM Wheels and caps, extra (new) front road
springs (replacemnts for current road springs that still function), 1 extra
(new) steering gear (replacement for still functioning current gear), two
used spare differentials, OEM installed luggage rack, misc other bits and
pieces.

A rebuilt 3 rail transmission with J-type OD installed 2003 @ mileage 84317.
The transmission and OD have worked flawlessly. Engine rebuilt just prior to
this with flat top pistons, stainless steel headers and stainless steel
muffler and tail pipe. Weber DGV carburetor. Electric fuel pump, mechanical
fuel pump still in place. SS braided brake hoses installed. Rear air shocks
installed. Front and rear steering and suspension has been rebushed with
upgraded bushings (not racing level). Floor panels are solid, have no holes
or serious remaining rust, cleaned up-rust treated-and repainted. Battery
box replaced.

I am finally ready to bite the bullet and replace the points with electronic ignition. Any recommendations? I've looked at the Pertronix, are there any others? I want to keep the existing distributor as I like the mechanical tach.

A previous owner installed a Crane Cams XR700 unit on our GT6 MK 3. It has
worked perfectly over the years. It does have a separate control box that is
mounted on the cowl. If you use a Pertronix, make sure to feed it with a
full 12 volts and not through the ballast resistor/wire. The lower voltage
will kill the unit.

Subject: [Spits] fixing transmission leak?
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: spitfires-bounces@autox.team.net

So ever since I rebuilt my transmission, it has been taking longer & longer to engage the overdrive. This means it has been low on tranny fluid. A fill-up fixes it, but I want to fix the root cause. When I did a tranny rebuild, I instead used my own cut gaskets & sealant instead of the thin paper gaskets.

I'm wondering if I messed up somewhere. Is it difficult to fix said transmission leak without having to take the transmission out again? I feel dumb not checking this before putting it back in.

On a 73 I believe it is a wire in the wiring harness. There is no separate
resistor. My 74 is that way as well. When I did my Pertronix I just ran
the 2 wires to the 2 terminals on the coil. It's been running fine for
about 12 years.

Thanks to all rhat replied. I took Bill's suggestion and connected it to the second terminal on the coil, and, after resetting the timing, it fired right up and is running great. It turns out that had I had the time to play with the timing yesterday it would have been fine.

I may be incorrectly reading what you are saying, but Petronix specifies a 12
volt source for the red wire -if you hook it up to the + terminal of a 6 volt
coil (e.g. one with a ballast resistor), the Pertronix unit will workbut the
general experience is that it will have a shortened life (Petronix isn't
saying for sure about this, but they do insist on a 12 volt coil which implies
that they agree).
You can probably use any source that provides 12 volts crank and run OR bypass
the ballast resistor(running a non-ballasted wire next to it is sufficient
without disconnecting the ballast wire sincethe current will take the easier
path) and change your 6 volt coil to a 12 volt.
Good luck!
