Subject: [Spridgets] Looking for a good mechanic in Nor Cal
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: spridgets-bounces@autox.team.net

Dear Listers,

My sister owns a horse ranch outside of Chico Ca. in Butte County. Nearby
cities would be Oroville and Paradise.

She has a 948 with a smooth case. She is asking me if I know of an honest
mechanic in her area (Chico) who can work on her car as her previous
mechanic has passed away?

Thanks,

Kirk

Subject: [Spridgets] Parts Needed

Errors-To: spridgets-bounces@autox.team.net

I am trying to help my sister who lives on a ranch outside of Chico Ca. A
few years ago she fell in love with a Bugeye, stock in nice condition very
original with the 948 and smooth case.

A mechanic she used and trusted in her area, a guy who loved to work on our
cars has passed away. So she is now a bit concerned about finding an
honest mechanic.

I told her that most mechanics are not oriented to our cars, but with the
right parts, and the simple nature of working on a Sprite, a good mechanic
would be able to take care of it for her.

So I am trying to find a rib case for her and an original throwout bearing.

I am running an original TB and it is holding up fine . . but the one I
bought via Moss a few years ago broke apart like hard cheese after about
500 miles. I am going to check eBay before I send her my last original TB
that I have been keeping.

So two questions:

Does anyone have a source on a solid rib case and also, there is an adaptor
plate she will need to attach the rib case to a 948?

Thank you so much!

Kirk

Kirk,

You may want to search the archives but as I recall the pilot bearing is
different for the smooth case and the rib case.

Speaking of the archives, I started working on getting the missing months filled in from
the saved messages, it isn't quite as easy as I had hoped. But I'll try not to delay
TOO long in getting it done. And I have decided to try and revive the forum once again.

Stay tuned,

Kirk-She'll need a 1275 rear engine plate, the 948 flywheel should be
redrilled for a 1275 clutch cover, and possibly a pilot bearing. Gerard has it
spelled out in his website's tech section
(http://gerardsgarage.com/Garage/Tech/TO_Bearings/tobearings.htm).I did this
with my MKII and used the 948 slave cylinder and a roller TO bearing that I
got from Winner's Circle (NLA) along with a custom aluminum flywheel cut to
stage 1 948 dimensions and drilled to 1275 pattern. It all works well
together. Is there something wrong with your sister's trans? you didn't state
that, just if it was possible.

Spent a bit of time working on Team.Net today. Brought back the forums, though there
might be some missing posts. The latest backup of that data got trashed during the break
ins and power surges a while back. What fun.

But the overpaid, underworked chump behind the curtain does manage to get something
useful done once in a while. Check out the forum with the link below.

Subject: [Spridgets] Question - Spridget Mechanic Sought in the General Nor
	Cal area
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: spridgets-bounces@autox.team.net

My sister has a trailer and is in the general Bay area from time to time
and can drive further.

I am hoping to make things easier . . that I might find someone that she
can take her 948 too. It needs a rib case or possibly a Datsun gearbox.

She is up for whatever it costs to have it back together again as she lost
her mechanic in the Chico Ca area. I think he passed away.

Maybe Gerard can do this for her, or?

This appears to be the best way to go rather than sending her to a mechanic
in her area that is not familiar with our cars.

Any ideas as to who might be willing to take this on?

Kirk

There's gonna be an O.S.H.I.T. West, isn't there? ;-)

You ARE right Jim. the snakes ARE HUNGRY!!
The only difference between a cat and a rat is one letter, and some fur on
the tail.

Subject: [Spridgets] Wiring Question
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: spridgets-bounces@autox.team.net

Now that my car has been shot back to white, Wimbledon White . . I am
putting the lights back in place.

Three wires to each headlight per which any combination will cause the
headlight to turn on. I tested with another 12 volt source.

I have a hard time reading the diagrams in the back of my book/s on the
Bugeye.

Just wondering if someone might have something to say in order that I am
setting the wires back properly? Or does it make any difference? Does the
turd wire have something to do with switching to hi beam?

Thanks,

Hi Kirk,

You should have 3 wires at the headlight, Lord Lucas dictated the
colours were:-
Black - Ground
Blue and white trace - Main/Hi beam headlight
Blue with red trace - Dipped/low beam headlight

If the two blue and trace
colours let the headlights light there is a problem as only one at a time
should complete the circuit.

There is also confusion about which terminal at
the back of the bulb is the ground. With the three terminals towards you and
the middle one at the top horizontal the left hand vertical terminal is the
ground, the horizontal is the dipped beam and the right vertical is the Hi or
main beam.
Rear of bulb facing you....
         Dipped/ low beam

 ___
ground | | Main /hi beam

You could try to scan the wiring
diagram you have into a computer and then you can look at the wiring more or
less any size you want. When brother-in-law was playing with a TR3 I did this
and printed it out on 2 sheets of A3 paper. He stuck these on his garage
wall, they were quite clear! If you have a Google search for 'MG Midget
wiring diagram' and go onto the Images section you'll find a couple there.
Hope it helps

Guy R Day

Recored three row radiator installed... then removed, fan mounting
arrangement fixed.. then reinstalled. At idle, will not get over 160
degrees.. rev to 3000 for a minute and let off, temp goes up to190 degrees
then cools down. Temp decrease across radiator (to[p vs bottom) a little over
20 degrees with the car stationary .

Oh yeah, any astronomers or astrophysicists out there? I need to know where
to publish. I have proof of fourth dimensional travel, I have seen the other
side of the black hole! For those of you not sure, please look down to either
side of the radiator mounting where it abuts the bumper support. I have found
4 5/16 inch nuts, 3 7/16 inch washers, and 2 7/16 inch lock washers. I have
all of mine installed ergo these MUST belong to someone else.

O.K. Folks, as you know, I get enough trains in my life everyday. So, when the company sends me a calendar with pictures of trains, well that's just a little too many trains. So, the first person to answer this email gets a 1915 BNSF official train calendar.
Mike MacLean
P.S. I will only be doing this for a couple more years, then retirement. I don't know if they will still send me calendars, but if they do, rest assured you guys get first dibs on them.

Can I get a 2015 instead of 1915? For the price, though, I'm not picky.

She is stunning you shouldn't have any problem getting 7.5K as she is a
Frank Clarici III Sprite that anyone would love to own and care for. If I
didn't have Pinky I would be all over it.
Much luck regards to the family Frankie,

Can't be the only one with this problem, surely others have overcome....

1275 & rib cage transmission into a Bugeye.

New slave cylinder requires a different hydraulic fitting than the BE
uses. Larger and may be different 'end' on the clutch line. Bell vs.
flare.

Hydraulic lines are smaller on the BE than the '67 Sprite, which the
engine/transmission came out of (less volume). ALSO the bore on the BE
master cylinder is different (smaller volume) than the rib cage slave
cylinder (greater volume).

Question: Would a new BE slave cylinder work with this transmission and if
so, which push-rod would be required; "short" or "long"?

OR...is there an adapter available that would allow the later slave
cylinder to be used using the Bugeye line?

Thank you.

Herb,

You can convert, but youll need to obtain the correct adapter fittings
fittings or make up a new line with the appropriate fittings. However, there
really no need to do that, it will work just fine with the original 7/8
especially if you have the disc brake conversion with a 3/4 bore master
cylinder.

See my web page below, found in my Tech section regarding other details. On
the main Tech page, look under the Info/Tuning drop down menu. Direct link
below.

I put a ribcase into my MKII, I used a flywheel drilled for a 1275 clutch,
full 1275 clutch package and the 948 slave driven by the later separate master
cylinder. I don't have any problem using the 948 slave with the standard 1275
pushrod that was attached to the throwout arm.I didn't find any adapter for
the hard line to the 1275 slave and as such was reticent to change over to the
later slave and line ($$- We be Cheap!)

List,

After a struggle to shoehorn in a 1275/Datsun Rivergate conversion, I installed a new battery and starter and cranked the engine, hoping to see some sign of oil flow before installing plugs and actually running the new engine. No joy. After a couple of minutes, there was no sign of oil either at the gauge connecting point or the pipe going to the filter. I dropped the sump and checked the pickup screen and pipe, put it back together and tried again. Still no luck. Both the oil pump and cam are new, as is almost everything in this engine. I did not prime the pump or oil system during the build. So my question to The List is this: is there anything else I can try before I just pull the engine and check the oil pump?

TIA,

I've seen this before. Take out the fitting for the oil pressure line and
pump about cup of engine into the port. That will prime the pump.

I would assume that the cup of engine must be heated to melting before one
can pump it into the port?

Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

I would assume that the cup of engine must be heated to melting before one
can pump it into the port?

Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

I've seen this before. Take out the fitting for the oil pressure line and
pump about cup of engine into the port. That will prime the pump.

List,

After a struggle to shoehorn in a 1275/Datsun Rivergate conversion, I
installed a new battery and starter and cranked the engine, hoping to see
some sign of oil flow before installing plugs and actually running the new
engine. No joy. After a couple of minutes, there was no sign of oil either
at the gauge connecting point or the pipe going to the filter. I dropped the
sump and checked the pickup screen and pipe, put it back together and tried
again. Still no luck. Both the oil pump and cam are new, as is almost
everything in this engine. I did not prime the pump or oil system during the
build. So my question to The List is this: is there anything else I can try
before I just pull the engine and check the oil pump?

TIA,

Ed Woods

Hi everyone sorry I haven't been keeping up with the list but I want you
all to know how much I love you guys/girls on this list.

Little update, I gave my 94 Saturn wagon away last month, you can see it on
one of the Holy Sprite links, gold wagon with lots of bumper stickers.
After 300K and 3rd engine that finally started making nasty noise I knew
the writing was on the wall. I still love that car and named her after
myself as we had a great time for 20 years together. It took me 1 year to
make up my mind and locate the perfect new owner as I didn't want her
crushed. After posting on a Saturn site about her I finally located a 20
something guy about 1.5 hrs from me and I offered her up free of charge,
gathered all the stuff I had since new including wallet key and all the
brochures I got at the dealer when I bought her new.

He came with his best friend and their girlfriends thinking she needed to
be pushed but she fired right up and drove into his car dolly. I waxed her
and she looked stunning. The best thing is he loves this model and always
wanted one and is a very good home mechanic on this type of car as he owns
2 other Saturns.

I paid it forward using our dear friend Frank Clarici's mantra. Elliott,
Linda's new owner is a nursing student, my favorite most respected
profession. He fixed her already and I am so happy I could help him into
his future. Linda is still my favorite car, and she will keep Eillott safe
and comfortable for years to come.

Thanks Frank Clarici for always teaching me everyday to be a better person
than the day before.
Linda

Be sure you filled the oil filter, then remove the plug on the oil galley
located on the side of the block( found facing upward a few inches below the
#4 exhaust port, flood the passage with oil and re- plug. Should prime it
nicely. There are two galley plugs right next to each other, make sure you
pick the oil galley plug.

No joy. After a couple of minutes, there was no sign of oil either at the
gauge connecting point or the pipe going to the filter. I dropped the sump and

List,

Oil flow in the 1275 at last! I removed the fastener at the banjo fitting and
added aboutB 1/2 cup of engine. Immediate pump action at that point when I
engaged the starter. Connected everything back up and now have oil flow at the
oil pressure fitting. Thank you all who helped solve my dilemma.

I have the valves set, the plugs are fine, air/fuel mixture damn near dead
on, new Standard points and condenser, It idles fine, and revs up fine, but
under load, when I get ready to take off, the whole engine just stumbles
and tries to die.
Any ideas what to look for next?

I have the valves set, the plugs are fine, air/fuel mixture damn near dead
on, new Standard points and condenser, It idles fine, and revs up fine, but
under load, when I get ready to take off, the whole engine just stumbles
and tries to die.
Any ideas what to look for next?

checked fuel bowls, clean. I don't have a pressure gauge for checking the
pump, but both bowls are full to the top.

Bill, I did change out the condenser, and it was still running rough. I
went to the distributor to move it, and saw blue arch from both side of the
coil, off of the bare male connectors on each side, jumping to the coil
wire. David, I pulled the cap and wires from the 67, and now it runs just
fine.
Next issue, when I put my hand under the hose that runs to the oil cooler
in front, the one that goes from the block, to the front of the car, it has
a leak.

It's 22.95 plus shipping. Just thought I would check to see if anyone has
one that they would part with, that may not ever have been installed.
Or, if any of our vendors may have a deal going.

Thank you for all your input and advice.

It's ALIVE!!!

So, I everything together and went for a drive, didn't get far, funny noise up
front. Stopped, opened the bonnet only to see the waterpump oscillating
rather than spinning. Took it all apart again, figured out that a spacer had
fallen out when I was trying to put the WP pulley on. Got that straightened
out only to find the damage done. Weird clunk every so often. Ordered new
WP, put it in yesterday and waited for the temps here to go North of 80F and
went for a drive. 20 min with revs up to 6500 and speed up to 70mph. At 60
mph (3500 revs) on Datsun trans temp stayed right at thermostat of 160F.
Quick run to 6500 revs for a while and temp moved up to 180 F -ish.

So far so good..

WHEEEE!!!!

Lester

..still isn't running as well as it should ..

Subject: [Spridgets] ALS Walk
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: spridgets-bounces@autox.team.net

Hi there,

As you may know, Im a loyal participant in The ALS Associations Walk to
Defeat ALS.. Ive walked in the past in memory of my mom, Janet, and have
learned firsthand that the Walk is a life-changing event, uniting thousands of
people around the nation to fight for the same ultimate goal a world without
ALS! The Walk is coming up again very soon (on November 15th), and that means
its fundraising time again.

WAIT!!!!!

Before you dismiss this email, thinking Are you really asking me again? I
hope youll consider a few things

1. People are still getting diagnosed with ALS. Now, more than ever, those
suffering with this devastating disease need our help. The money you donate
not only funds cutting-edge research, but it also provides critical programs
for families affected by ALS. Did you know that it can cost up to $200,000 per
year to live with ALS?

2. Every donation is spent incredibly efficiently to maximize the impact on
the fight against ALS. 91% of the money you donate goes directly to fund
research and patient programs. Thats an impressive percentage compared to
other charitable organizations. Really. Check it out!

3. Still not feeling inspired? Then, I want to tell you exactly how ALS
affects its victims. The motor neurons in a person's brain and spinal cord
waste away. When the motor neurons die, the muscles become paralyzed.
Gradually, a person is robbed of the ability to walk, speak, eat, and
eventually breathe. Upon diagnosis, doctors give ALS patients only two to five
years without mechanical ventilation to live.

Research funded by The ALS Association continues to make great strides in
helping scientists understand more about ALS, but there is still no known cure
for this always-fatal disease. We must do more to help those suffering.

As you know, I am asking again for your financial support in my quest to raise
funds for The ALS Association through the Walk to Defeat ALS..

Please click on the link below to go directly to my personal fundraising page
or to our team page for Giant Steps for Janet. No amount is too small. Every
dime makes a difference.

Sincerely,
Kristi

P.S. Please forward this email to as many people as possible. We need more
people to support the fight against this awful disease.

I thought you might like to see the article with the specs and development
info for a new period prototype Midget that has been produced in the UK.
The car will be shown for the first time at the Classic Motor Show in
Birmingham, UK November 14-16.

Rather than trying to explain it, I will let the article speak for
itself. Looks like a cool concept car and something quite viable.

This article appeared on the sebringsprite.com website this morning.

Here also, is the webpage for the upcoming Classic Motor show.

I am sure there will be photos of this car and other Sprites and Midgets on
display at the show posted on the Sebring Sprite website late next month.

Very cool, and clicking around the website I see I could go to dinner with
Mike and Ed China.
I'd like that, I could convince them to do up a US Spec MG Midget, maybe
one of mine!
Next year they are filming from California!
