Errors-To: spridgets-bounces@autox.team.net

Late '61/early '62 Sprite rolling shell. Was a project that never got
finished. Has disc front brakes, the shock absorbers feel firm, and the PO
said the front end had been rebuilt. The tub needs floorboards, rocker
panels, and rear quarter panels, but the doors open and close nicely. It
comes with seats, the aluminum trim around the cockpit, soft top supports
that come apart side to side to stow in the trunk, and sliding side
curtains, all of which need to be refurbished, so this is either a parts car
or a restoration project. It has no title and its VIN tag is gone, but
original number tags are intact in both the driver's and passenger's door
jambs, and it has the number 12122 stamped into the body in the engine
compartment, above the passenger footwell. I also have early front fenders
and a hood that can go with it. I have pictures; email midgiesdad (at) gmail
.com or call 207 - three six three - 3405. Asking $700, but I'm open to
offers. I'm in southern Maine.

sources that only take online orders actually have the parts they list.
Any help appreciated. I'm currently trying to track an aftermarket valve
that may or may not actually exist.

Well the major Honda dealer in town had this to say:

The part number you have provided is unfortunately discontinued by honda. I would suggest searching that part number on eBay or google to see if you can find a private seller. Best of luck.

Oh well.

Rockauto absolutely has it available. Reference EGR4055 Wells
or 4F1373. Should run about $118.00. I don't do any business with
them, though they're down the street a few blocks, but a customer of
mine who uses them a lot is able to buy it.

David Lieb got it right. After I confirmed that the bendix was not going to come unstuck without considerable force, I was more enthusiastic on the square shaft at the front, turning clockwise, which moves the bendix out. The completely new bendix gear is a bit chewed up. I don't know what the ring gear looks like.

I will not return that starter to the car until it is starting and running properly. Instead, I will use the gear reduction starter that Ron dislikes. I have been cranking too much for my battery anyway, so am jumping it to my minivan. There will not be a problem with low voltage.

Can't go wrong with a header and exhaust system from APT. (www.aptfast.com). Ask for David Anton and tell him Mike MacLean sent you. His store is only a few minutes from my home. David is very knowledgeable and helpful. His employee Phil is a good source of info also. Their Maniflow systems really flow some air and sound great. Nice and throaty when you step on it.

Mike-
The only hardware inside is the top bow sockets. The hardtop should have a
pair of brackets that are at the back of the side curtain area that locate on
the top bow sockets. The hardtop is held down by two J bolts with wingnuts
that pass through the top bow sockets and the brackets on the hardtop. At the
front there are just the two over center latches that hook under the lip of
the windscreen.
Most tops no longer have the original j bolts, the wing nut, BTW, goes on the
top, after you pass the J bolt up through.

It only goes one way-Pay it Forward

I have an original Bugeye hardtop with some, but apparently not all, mounting
hardware.
Nothing inside the car. Can someone please send me a picture of the
interior mounting
brackets, etc. showing how it all goes together?

Oh yea, i forgot.. AH spares carries the latches. The biggie is finding the
brackets that bolt to the hardtop and tgru which the j bolt passes. Havent
ever found a supplier who has recreated them

Thanks for all the pictures. I was expecting some fittings to accept the angled leg from the hard top, but it appears that it just lays on the side, clamped through the soft top socket. I am missing a few parts, but they are easy to fake up.

The Long Island Spridgeteers know him well. He recently modified the Harley
HIF6 carb I bought online for $50 for use in the Holy Sprite. He has a very
good reputation, but is not cheap. Be careful that you specify exactly what
you need/want.

Yep, Mike bought it when Father Jack decided he had it long enough.

I had Joe rebuild a set of H6's for a Healey 100 Le Mans Kit and he did
a very good mechanical job, they worked fine. But, it you are looking
for cosmetic restoration as well, not so great. I was able to shine
them up and got along fine but it was an expensive process and I
expected more for the price. Since then I have done several pair of
HS2's and HS4's with parts from Peter and with a little patience I can
do just about as well. The one thing that I hear about is re-bushing
the throttle shafts but I have yet to find any significant wear on the
H2 body, all of the wear has all been in the brass shafts which are
easily replaceable. I would suggest you spend a few bucks for rebuild
kits and shafts and give it a try, you will save several hundred bucks
which will buy a bunch of beer.

I was able to shine them up and got along fine but it was an expensive process
and I expected more for the price. Since then I have done several pair of
HS2's and HS4's with parts from Peter and with a little patience I can do just
about as well.

Exactly! I think he did an OK job rebuilding them, but his website really
hypes the cosmetics. That's why I sent my carbs to NYC. I could have had
them rebuilt as well locally for half the price, but I was expecting them to
look great and not have the heads of all the screws chewed up,etc.

Mike, it's according to what you mean by 'upgrade'. Since the exhaust is straight where the muffler goes, any straight thru design will work. Your basic Cherry Bomb type muffler works well, is inexpensive, and gives you minimal clearance issues. I have also seen Harley Davidson slip on mufflers used. They can be had fairly cheap too, and are usually chrome if you want that. If you know somebody at a dealer (I have a very good friend at the Nassau County dealer, for instance) who works on them, they will probably have a good supply of new-bike take-offs because so many folks who buy a new Harley immediately hand the dealer a huge check to change a bunch of stuff out for them. If yo want to go thisway, call me and I'll give you his number.

How about using a battery tie-down kit? They usually come with two "J"
bolts and wing nuts.

A battery tie down bolt is typically 1/4 " and the "correct" chrome plated
wingnut is 5/16 if memory serves me correct. Look at item 18

http://www.scparts.co.uk/sc_en/english-cars/austin-healey/austin-healey-bn1-b
j8/windscreen-side-screens-and-glass/side-screens-bn1-to-bn7-bt7.html

to see what the wingnut looks like. We are referencing it strictly from an
originality perspective lol. Other wingnuts would work, just not as
"original"

Yes. A lot of us worked on it over several months. I am currently
installing a new engine, as the old one did something fatal which I have
not yet determined.

My 1275 distributor drive is completely stuck. It can be rattled a little, but I think that may only be up and down, not in and out. Rocking the engine has no effect.

What has happened?

Michael,
When you rick the engine/turn it over, does the distributor spindle turn? This
is a new one for me. I have heard of the gear wearing but not stuck.

I forgot I have to take the whole business out, not just the distributor.

Hi Guys and Gals,
I know this topic has been covered but I'm covering it again in more depth
and with photos that all can see. This link shows my 1st car, year, make
model and of course color at an outstanding restoration; 1965 Pontiac
Tempest in Fontana Blue, oddly my parents ordered the same car and color
but 4 door in 1965 and I was there at the showroom watching the event. I
bought mine from an old high school boyfriend and he was reluctant to sell
it for such a high price of $50. because she needed lots of TLC that I was
prepared to give which jumpstarted my freedom. I parked my car side by side
in my parents driveway next to their 1965 Pontiac Tempest in Fontana blue
from 1973 to 1976. I was so drawn to the detail of this ad that I saved the
images from eBay. A year later I looked up the images and to my surprise
they have restored possibly hundreds of cars both foreign and domestic to
the same outstanding condition. I've got to visit this company and commend
them for their amazing work. This car was sold for 16K which was much lower
than the buy now @ around 25K. I was so drawn to it I bought a 1:18 scale
diecast model in the same color : ) instead of buying the car.

What was your first car? Post an image from your favorite search engine
hopefully in the same color.

List,
I wanted to look at some of my early photos of my 62 Sprite on
SpriteSpot.com but the site is still down (photos only) anyone know when it
will be back up?

I then tried to look for my oldest 2006 free web site called freewebs, my
link http://www.freewebs.com/lgrunthaner/ and it too is down and possibly
forever.

Several months ago I looked up my Microsoft web page called MS Live and I
couldn't get in without resetting my password but in doing that all the
images were deleted.

I've learned a lot never store your photos in the cloud unless you have
several DVD's with a backup carefully organized and only trust a paid
server, na never trust the cloud....LOL.

That was my favorite Pontiac of all time, Lin! Except I always wanted a
convertible. I never owned one though. My first car that I actually owned
I bought in England in 1965 (link below). I sold it for enough money to
get married in 1968... Shoulda kept the darned car! It had the UK plates
KPP 123 on it. I restored it and sold it to a Chief Petty Officer who
brought it back to the states. Interestingly enough he contacted me in
1976 and offered to sell it back to me because he knew how much I loved it.
(I'm still head-over-heels for that car!!) Unfortunately I was in the
process of divesting myself of that first marriage at the time and didn't
have the money. When I finally could have afforded to buy it I was years
too late and had lost track of its location and owner.

1946 MG TC exactly like this one right down to the color and upholstery!

This was my first car while in high school.
http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/dealer/chevrolet/bel_air/1194801.html
I paid $350 for it, don't remember if it was purchased in the summer of '64
or '65. I got my license in the summer of '64. We recovered the seats
with 'real' black naugahyde from Sears, put on a dual exhaust system with
glass packs, and painted the wheels black, which everyone did then. The
265 c.i. smoked so bad, we put a 283 in and it had an automatic trans
rather than the 3-speed on the column and Corvette 265 ci that this car
has.

My dad's name was on the title and he sold the Chevy without asking me,
while I was in college. Wish I had that car back. I certainly can't
afford the one in the Hemmings listing. My next car was a '61 Chevy Bel
Air 2 door hardtop with the bubble window in the rear. Wish I had that car
back too. My third car was a '60 Austin-Healey 3000. I sold that car to
my buddy in the UK. I still have my other '60 A-H 3000, which I bought in
1984. I also have two rusted Bugeye body shells and a Bugeye project car.

Nice MG Jim, I remember in my teens mid 1970's I found an MG TF with a B
engine around the corner from home and the woman wanted 3K so I went to the
bank and brought over 3K in cash. The woman opened the front door and said
a man offered her 3.5K. I knew then and there that it would end horribly
and I wasn't prepared to go back to the bank for more money that I didn't
own. Then my friend sold me her 68 Spitfire for $50.

Yes Jim I would love to have had a convertible 65 Tempest or Lemans or
better still GTO too. What a great car, it was the exact color and model as
my parents so I knew everything about that car and it was my first
opportunity to turn some wrenches because my brother and father didn't have
time to help me. I'm so glad they didn't have time because I can't think of
anything better to do with my free time than turn wrenches, figure out how
to repair with books and forums and of course this list. But i must say
when I was in my 20's I worked for my boyfriend who had a shop and I did
brakes, tires, and replaced parts for customers so I wan't a mechanic I
was an assistant. I was cold, my joints and muscles were sore, my knuckles
were always bleeding, and my nails were always caked with grease. I enjoyed
learning but my body didn't want to do it for 8 hrs a day. Although if it
was an LBC, vintage VW or BMW motorcycle shop only I think you know the
answer to how long I would work there .......wink!

Subject: [Spridgets] Starter vibrating on fiitwell- My inadvertent solution
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: spridgets-bounces@autox.team.net

Some of you may remember that I had an issue with the GR Isuzu starter in the
MKII vibrating on the passengers footwell. I solved the vibration
inadvertently. When I lifted the engine to reset the cam timing, I set the oil
pan onto a board across the frame rail flanges to support the engine whilst I
worked on it. I removed all of the bolts one normally would to remove the
engine beforehand, including the trans mount bolts. I reset the cam timing
(correctly this time using a piston stop)and put the engine back into place.
Low and behold the vibration is gone, I now have ~1/8" clearance to the
footwell! So the upshot is that I had the engine in a bit to the back, now its
farther forward and runs great (amazing what the correct cam timing will do,
eh?).
Thanks to all who made suggestions, I promised to share my solution and here
it is.-Whoops I made things better without trying! Isn't that against some
sort of natural law or other?

"The Leiden Separatists bought a small ship, the Speedwell, in Holland.
They embarked from Delftshaven on July 22, 1620.
They sailed to Southampton, England to meet the Mayflower, which had been
chartered by their English investors. There, other Separatists and
additional colonists joined them.
On August 15, the Mayflower and Speedwell set sail for America. The
Speedwell leaked so badly that both ships turned back to England, putting
in first at Dartmouth and then at Plymouth. Finally, on September 16, 1620,
the Mayflower set sail, alone, for America."

Subject: [Spridgets] Wiring Help!
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: spridgets-bounces@autox.team.net

I am rewiring the back lights on my 59 Sprite. The wires were re-done many
years ago . . so no color coding as they are all white.

After a recent paint job that I did . . the wires ran back into the hole
and I lost track of which was which.

I currently have the rear lights wired for short night trip emergency stuff
if needed . . but only by one 12 volt wire each side and the other terminal
grounded with a separate ground wire.

With the tail lights and brake lights one 12 volt wire goes to one side of
the terminal on the tail light assembly while the other wire which turns on
when I push the brakes goes to the other terminal . . . correct?

How are the rear tail and brake lights grounded . . self grounding to the
body or?

Dumb stuff I know! My wiring knowledge is pretty basic . . such as stereo
installs and not much more. (I was able to get the front lights back in
working order).

I am also not good at reading schematics . . .

So any help will be super appreciated!

Thanks!

Hope you have had a wonderful Thanksgiving . . .

Kirk
