I'm goin' freakin' crazy here! How the hell do you get the glass out of
the door windows?? I'm ready to send the car in for paint, but the painter
wants that glass out. I think I've disassembled and re-assembled the doors
at least 3 times without seeing how to get the glass out of the track on
the regulators. What am I missing??

Hi,

Thought I would come back with a status report on the mini that was not =
running on freeway that I asked about a month ago, remember that far =
back ? :)

I tried everything, I assumed like most of you it was gas related, =
swapped out fuel pump, swapped out fuel lines, pulled the distributor =
and checked its advance curve and put in optical points, back to the =
fuel system as it was still happening.

Decided to remove the fuel tank and clean it out inside, I found that =
the previous owner had used RTV silicone to install the sending =
unit=85BINGO found the problem it was gas all right.

Rather large bits of silicone floating around in the tank, one would =
get sucked into the fuel pickup and stop the fuel flow=85car would shut =
down and silicone would float away to come back later. Here is a pic oh =
what came out of the fuel tank. =

<http://singer.rambour.com/stuff/mini/mini_gas.jpg>

Car was running fine again until yesterday, new problem, its a =
squeak/grinding noise under acceleration only no noise when coasting or =
clutch is in. Motor mounts feel fine as I thought it was a loose motor =
allowing metal to metal contact Can=92t identify it but its not the fan =
belt I removed it and tested that theory=85ah the joys of someone else =

I have done a few tanks over the past year, and had good luck with the
following sequence of steps.

1. Remove fuel.
2. Fill tanks with soapy water (I like simple green, but any detergent
should work)
3. Agitate and let settle several times, then drain
4. Rinse tank a few times with distilled water to get the soap out. (use
distilled water to avoid leaving any mineral residue)
5. Put a small amount (like 1/2 gal) of denatured alcohol in the tank and
agitate. The alcohol will mix with he water and insure it dries quickly
and completely.
6. Dry the inside of the tank. I use a piece of heater hose connected to
a hair dryer to dry the tank out.
7. Remove rust and etch the inside of the tank with phosphoric acid. I
normally used about 64oz of naval jelly dissolved in 2 gallons of distilled
water. SEAL the tank as soon as this goes in to avoid any rust forming on
the parts you have etched.
8. As soon as all rust is removed, immediately drain the acid and apply
your favorite tank sealant.

I have done a couple bike tanks and a couple LBC tanks this way over the
years. One is almost 20 years since I did it, and it shows no signs of
deterioration.

It's been banned in California, but we can still get it here in the real world. :-)

Subject: [Spridgets] mini question (again)
From: Mike Rambour via Spridgets <spridgets@autox.team.net>
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: spridgets-bounces@autox.team.net

Is there a mini list for the classic mini's ? I have joined a few
mini website forums but I prefer e-mail and this group is super, so I
was browsing team.net and didn't find a mini list but some of the info
maybe out of date.

I have a new issue with the mini...the driveshaft is rubbing on the
exhaust. Didn't happen first 1,400 miles he owned it and now it is and
I can't see any reason for it, everything is tight, everything looks
correct but obviously something moved. I can't seem to figure out how
to re-adjust it to have some clearance. Motor mounts seem solid, no
reason for the movement and no way to adjust it that I can see anyway.

We are at the point where daughter's fiance is ready to give up
(please, please, let me buy the car, oh please). At this point, he said
he was just parking it until after the wedding in April and maybe we
would pull the motor then and do a rebuild, but there is nothing wrong
with the motor really, it has good and even compression, good oil
pressure. It does run hot, not overheat hot but constantly sits about
200-205, I think its the location of the aftermarket digital gauge
sending unit that causes it to look hot, but the original dash gauge
also reads warm.

     mike

P.S. Because he sold his modern day car to buy the mini, when he parks
the mini he has to drive my S2000 to get to work, etc. so naturally I
prefer the mini be working.

Mike- I've found the North American Motoring forum
 http://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/classic-mini-talk-48/
(I know you said you prefer email, but..) to be a pretty good group for
MInis-Granted I habituate the MINI portion, but they seem to be pretty OK.
The above is the classic Mini forum.
The only reason I can think of for the axle to be meeting the header is
dropping of the transmission in relation to the block, or bending of the
header (It wasn't backed over anything, was it?)
Good Luck

Anyone know the thread on the captive bolts that hole the gas tank in place
on a MKIII Midget? I undercoated the car with pick-up bed liner which
filled the threads. Now I need to chase the threads bt can't tell what they
are. I was thinking 1/4 - 28?

TIA....

How about taking a mall pick and popping the bed liner out of the treads? U=

I'm surprised you couldn't have went around the bolt at the base and then j=

I'll see if it lists the thread size in factory parts manual

I'll see if it lists the thread size in factory parts manual

Personally I like to use a wire wheel. Just make certain to hold the bolt
in a locking pliers (AKA vise Grips.) And hold it against the wheel in such
a position that when it gets caught the wheel will throw it at the floor
not at your face. And wear eye protection.

Wow. This is 45 min. south of me but I think I'll pass. Gotta be
scarier than a Cheetah.

http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/dealer/austin-healey/sprite/1812205.html

Also: looking for a good set of new 1/4 elliptics for the Bugeye. I can
get them de-arched so I don't have to use wedgies. Anyone no of a
source for the 10 leafers or can vouch for the quality of ones from the
usual suspects?

Aren't they work boots?

You got to be kidding about this "classic" Sprite.

By the way, anybody in the network near Pittsboro / Chapel Hill / Cary, NC
? Spend the winters there but leave the Bugeye in NY.
