Just a heads up to my fellow WPTA folks. If you don=E2=80=99t have = an EZ PASS when=20 you enter PA from Ohio you=E2=80=99ll be sent a bill for $12.20 in the = mail as they are=20 going cashless at the entry. $5.50 if you have EZ PASS. Even with EZ = PASS I=20 often take Ohio 7 to 14 and then 51 to I-376 especially when going = anywhere in=20 the South Hills.

Pretty sneaky move on the part of the PA Pike whose fees are = already among=20 the highest if not the highest. Also if you do go through the entry gate = to PA=20 and then decide to to take I-376 off the PA Pike you=E2=80=99ll get hit = with another=20 =E2=80=9Ccashless fee=E2=80=9D over and above the $12.20 you just spent = to travel a few miles on=20 I-76.

Ohio Turnpike customers will be as happy to hear this = news as we=20 are to deliver it. Yes, we are providing a consistent public = Wi-Fi=20 access experience for our customers inside all 14 Service Plazas across the = Ohio=20 Turnpike.

The new service will be accessible in time = for the=20 Thanksgiving holiday travel weekend for checking up on = emails,=20 internet surfing and whatever else you may need to do while = taking a=20 break at one of our service plazas.

All you will need to enjoy this service is your = smartphone or=20 laptop. Connect your device and enjoy!

Trooper=20 honored for saving distraught woman's life =20

Having the courage to do the right thing to keep the = public safe=20 is not something to be taken lightly or easily assumed by = even the=20 bravest among us.

On May 28, Trooper Corey J. Linser was = traveling=20 west on the Ohio Turnpike when he noticed a female = pedestrian=20 sitting on the ledge of the US Route 20 overpass in Maumee,=20 Ohio.

He contacted the Cleveland Dispatch Center to = advise of=20 a possible suicidal person. Trooper Linser approached the = individual=20 in his patrol car, activated his emergency lights and used = his=20 spotlight to get a better look at her. He used the car's = speaker to=20 communicate with her.

When she began to walk away, = Trooper=20 Linser approached the young woman on foot. Suddenly, she = darted into=20 traffic and into the center lane. He selflessly ran after = her and=20 was able to remove her from the road as a passing vehicle = went by=20 them in the far left lane. Trooper Linser showed great = compassion to=20 the young woman by keeping her calm from that point forward = until=20 paramedics arrived.

For his actions, Trooper Linser = was=20 presented a Certificate of Recognition from Patrol Major = Charles A.=20 Jones, District Commander John C. Altman and Swanton Post = Commander=20 Lt. Vern E. Fisher.

As we have pointed before, the Ohio State Highway Patrol = conducts=20 speed enforcement on the Ohio Turnpike.

A = significant part=20 of the effort is from the air as Trooper Bryan = Dail=20 spots speeders and radios down to his fellow Troopers on the = ground=20 who cite the suspected violators.

On Aug. 31, a Saturday, for example, a number of = motorists were=20 caught traveling at excessive and dangerous speeds. In fact, = there=20 were 53 citations issued to drivers who were = traveling more=20 than 90 mph and three drivers were cited for speeds = in=20 excess of 100 mph!

When you realize that speeding is = the=20 number one reason people are involved in a crash, it's easy = to see=20 that this behavior is ill-advised and it will be caught. For = the=20 vast majority who obey the speed limit, thank you for = keeping=20 yourself and the rest of us safe.

PA = Turnpike=20 going cashless at Ohio border eastbound=20

For customers who enter Pennsylvania from Ohio, please be = advised=20 the Pennsylvania Turnpike is converting to cashless tolls at = the=20 Ohio border on Oct. 27, 2019.

Currently, the cash toll entering the Gateway Toll Plaza on the = Pennsylvania=20 Turnpike from Ohio is $7.90 and the E-ZPass rate is = $5.50.=20 The cash option will be replaced by toll-by-plate=20 technology.

The conversion to cashless tolling at = this=20 location means customers will no longer need to stop to pay = their=20 tolls. The new cashless toll cost on Oct. 27 will be $12.20. = The E-ZPass rate will be = $5.90.

For=20 customers without an E-ZPass transponder, the PA = Turnpike=20 will take a picture of the customer's license plate, = generate an=20 invoice and mail it to the owner of the vehicle. =

Customers=20 are advised to establish an E-ZPass account if they = haven't=20 done so already--to take advantage of the discount that = becomes even=20 more important for those who travel to the Keystone = State.

The Eastbound Gateway Toll Plaza at the = Pa.=20 border will be going cashless on Oct.=20 = 27.
National=20 Teen Driver Safety Week spurs=20 = conversations

This week and every week, parents are encouraged to have=20 conversations with their teens about the important rules = they need=20 to follow to stay safe behind the wheel.

These rules = address=20 the greatest dangers for teen drivers: alcohol, inconsistent = or no=20 seat belt use, distracted and drowsy driving, speeding, and = number=20 of passengers.

The problem:

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death = for teens=20 in the United States - ahead of all other types of injury, = disease, or violence.=20
There were 1,972 teen drivers of passenger vehicles = involved=20 in fatal motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2015. An = estimated=20 99,000 teen passenger vehicle drivers were injured in = motor=20 vehicle traffic crashes.

National Teen = Driver=20 Safety Week is Oct. 20-26.

In Ohio, = 16-year-olds may=20 not drive with more than one non-family passenger unless = accompanied=20 by a parent, guardian or legal custodian. At age 17, the = driver may=20 have no more passengers than there are seat belts in the = vehicle.=20 =20

Ohio Turnpike crews made final preparations for the = upcoming=20 winter season last week, with comprehensive winter equipment = inspections at eight Maintenance Garages along the 241-mile=20 mainline.

=E2=80=9CWhen winter storm events hit, the = women and men=20 of our maintenance operations will work the hours necessary, = including weekends and holidays, to ensure that our = customers are=20 provided with safe and reliable travel,=E2=80=9D said Chris = Matta, Deputy=20 Chief Engineer for the Ohio = Turnpike.

=E2=80=9CSnow and Ice=20 control is a top priority for our staff. = Those=20 responsible for completing snow and ice operations do so = with a=20 sense of pride and are dedicated to making sure the = reputation of=20 the Ohio Turnpike=E2=80=99s program continues each=20 season."

Approximately 100 snowplows = will be=20 available at any given moment to maintain the 1,395 lane = miles, 31=20 interchanges, and 14 service plazas on the Ohio = Turnpike. =20 Crews use an average of 66,000 tons of salt each year and = 170,000=20 gallons of liquid chemicals per year.
